Ok so thanks everybody!I have to say that I am highly aware of what the MAL score system is saying about 5 as "average" but I know that many people use a different rating system and I was curious about their perspective on it.No need to be so aggressive and if you find the thread dumb you can ignore it as well.Don't lower yourself to dump threads.

I've given Akira a 5/10. The action is exciting, the animation is breathtaking, the tone and atmosphere are flawless, and the music is bizarre but totally works. And then everything else is trash. 5/10 means that, for every good thing the anime does, it does something else poorly.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

It means it does an equal number of things I like and dislike. Sometimes I'm indifferent about the show overall but it might have something cool like Revy in black lagoon. It's kind of surprising so many people use 5 as shit or try and equate art to a school grading system.

5 is only average because MAL doesn't have user scores with decimals. The 'average' would technically be 5.5 since there is no 0/10 rating. So technically 5 is below average.

I gave SAO 5/10. I thought it was bad and didn't finished it on the first run. Then realized that shows can actually get worse.
Signature removed. It was too good for this cruel world.

Pathetic, crap, regret watching this, I wish I could forget all about it. A 6 for me is barely watchable. This is my personal opinion, I'm pretty generous while rating anime, if I don't like something I don't rate them, so if I'd go out of my way to give a low rating to a show it probably means I despise it.

Its generic, the animation is whatever, the music is whatever, everything is forgettable.

A 5 and 6 are basically the only two ratings on my scale that can be differentiated on enjoyment alone. When I'm watching something I consider average, there's a thin line that separates "probably worth watching" from "probably not worth watching", and that line is simply how much I enjoyed watching the series.

I generally wouldn't try to dissuade someone from watching something I rated a five, or at least not on an inherent basis, but I generally wouldn't actively recommend it either.

5 is the most average animu evah, It didn't do anything bad but it didn't really do anything that makes it stand out like a sore thumb. Though it could have some interesting things.

On my rating scale every show I watch starts with a 5, and can improve up or descend down the scale.

So for me, it's... well, still average. Did nothing good to amaze me, or too bad enough for me to hate it.

Lol sucks to be a show that's 5...so average and boring and forgettable. Even stuff I rate 1-4 has some laughably bad stuff that becomes their saving grace.

Taken from my blog entry about how I rate my anime:

5: The lower part of the average, which I’d consider to be just… okay. Not terrible or even bad per se, just kind of plain, without too much to really like about.

I rate anime 5 if they had no effect on me whatsoever. Usually I try not to acknowledge their existence at all, much less if I rate it below a 5. I think it's a neutral rating, as well. It's not extremely rare I give an anime that rating. I don't think it's a harsh rating or anything. Most of the time they're anime that bored me very much. I go by MAL ratings... "masterpiece, great, very good, good, fine, average, etc."
(But I don't think Hatsukoi Monster deserves a 5.8 on MAL, yeesh.)

1-10
2-9
3-8
4-7
5-6

Left row bad, right row good.

Top says very very very very
Then very very very
Then very very
Then very.

So 1 is very very very very bad and 5 is bad, 6 is good and 10 is very very very very good.

Like how a good rating system is supposed to be.

To me, scoring 5/10 is pretty lame, and cowardly - it doesn't say anything! What can you even say about a anime, that gets such an average score?!

It's like saying "Oh, the score? Yeah, so you see... I didn't like it, at all, but I'm way too nice, to not give it any lower score than that, but I'm also much too afraid, to give it any higher either."

To me, the score 5, is a definite no-no - it has to be either the worst, or the best!

A 5 is average if your enjoyment was the same as any other seasonal anime. I think that makes a 7 that much higher in value. Then a ten is just impressive, it makes for a better system then consistent 7s and 10s wouldn't mean as much. I give 5s and 6s when I give a 7 it was a good show getting an 8 is tough you have to really bring out emotions.

A 5 for me is just average. If I had a word for it, it would be "meh". An anime that wasn't bad, but wasn't good either. It was entertaining to watch, but doesn't extend beyond that and I usually forget about it quickly.

For me a 5 is an anime that I didn't liked, since I usually don't rate anything with 1 or 4, if I give a 5 that means I couldn't complete the anime no matter what (be it a story that I found not interesting, the graphics were just awfull,etc...)

5 is average plain and simple so 5 isn't a great mark but it's not terrible & some of these rating scales I see people using are completely retarded. Keep it simple.

For me, if I rate something a 5, that means it is a borderline fail. I grade anime like teachers graded my report cards, anything below 5(50%) is bad, and it just gets worse the lower the grade. Though I am quite open-minded, and I find the good in almost every anime I watch.. so, as of yet, I don't believe I have even rated any show a 5, or anything lower.. Feel free to throw your worst anime at me and maybe I can change that!

I don't think a 5 out of 10 has any kind of negative connotation.

A 5 out of 10 for me generally just means the anime was nothing special. These are often the mini-series' and shows that were fine but not good enough for me to give a 6 out of 10. The problem I find is that when using MAL's default scoring system, the words "fine" and "average" are nearly the same to me. A show that is "fine" is a usually an average show so many of the anime I have rated a 5 out of 10 or a 6 out of 10 are anime I actually see as being on almost the same level.

5 is average, meh or forgettable, but not bad. Some get a 5 because they keep switching between really good and really bad, but I'd have to finish a show for that.

It's a neutral score. It means I didn't dislike the show but I didn't like it either. Closer to negative than positive though in the sense that I wouldn't recommend a 5/10.

For me a five would be for a very average show but leaning a bit more to the negative side: typical archetypes, repetitive plot, no proper character development, etc.

A 5 is a mediocre show that didn't stand out one way or another, or executes everything in a generally sub-par manner.

Of course, it could also mean a show with equal parts good and bad. (IE: Shigatsu (at least in my opinion; as I know a lot of people loved this show))
