It was announced at the end of the 126th chapter of Shimoku Kio's Genshiken manga, released on July 25 in the September 2016 issue of Kodansha's Afternoon magazine, that it is the penultimate chapter and the following chapter will be its final. The issue containing the final chapter goes on sale on August 25.

The main Genshiken manga series had been serialized between 2002 and 2006 in Afternoon magazine, focusing on male otaku as main characters. Genshiken Nidaime started serialization on October 25, 2010 in the same magazine, joined by kouhai who are fujoshi and a fudanshi. The series has recently released its 20th volume on June 23. Each series also received multiple anime adaptations. Palm Studios adapted the manga into a 12 episode anime that aired in 2004, followed by a three-episode OVA by Ajia-Do. Studio Arms went in-charge of the anime's second season. Production I.G helmed the TV anime, OVA, and specials of Genshiken Nidaime.

This was my reaction when I just read this, it is the only series I truly look forward to the next volume still. Luckily I read the English serialization and I still have 4 volumes left to look forward to.

I am truly gonna miss this series. I remember when the original series finished serialization and I was disheartened only to hear of news for the sequel. Although at this point, there isn't really much else they can do so I feel that this is only appropriate. #AllGoodThingsMustComeToAnEnd

I don't think your statement is very clear.

First, who is "they" in this case? Are you talking about Shimoku Kio and his publisher/editor/etc.?

Then what do you mean by "go back to real otakus like the original series"?

Are you essentially suggesting that this is just the end of the "Second Season" and they're going to be putting out a "Third Season"? There is no real indication that this will happen based on current news. This could very well be the final end of the series. And if Shimoku Kio did decide to restart the series again with a "Third Season", there's no guarantee that the otaku included will be any more or less "real" than any of the others so far.

Anyway, I'm personally kind of glad that the series is ending again. This is one of my favorite manga that I've read, but I actually haven't read much of Nidaime yet (not due to the shift in cast; just other things getting in the way). It will be good to know that the overall series won't be going much further beyond the 20 volume mark. Plus, I originally thought I finished this series nearly a decade ago.

That brings me to a somewhat related note: I get kind of annoyed with how MAL treats series sequels and related works sometimes. I had Genshiken finished and scored (I usually only score things I've finished), but then Nidaime comes out and the series became ongoing again. Yes, Kio-sensei and/or his publisher decided to continue the chapter/volume numbers from where the initial Genshiken left off, but the continuation is still labeled as 'Genshiken Nidaime' on every volume. Why not have that as a separate entry?

Because on the flip side, I recently got a notification that a New Related Anime for Outlaw Star was added to the database. I was excited! New Outlaw Star or some long lost episodes that I never knew about?! But then I look at it and see that someone just decided to split two video-only episodes out from the original series into a separate entry and the main entry was reduced to 24 episodes long. Really? This series has been established as a complete 26 episode series for almost 20 years and now it's been decided that the two video-only episodes should be considered a separate thing?

Well, I guess that gave me an extra completed entry on my list, but it seems really weird to do this yet have both Genshiken series lumped in together when it was clearly a separate sequel. (I'd also like to present Exhibit B: Ai Ore and Ai Ore having two separate entries.)

It really should be separate, just like the anime is.

I didn't quote the rest because it was long, but another of example, that is worse than the Outlaw Star example, is last year's To Love-Ru. They split the final episodes into a seperate entry. Their own rules state that they do that if the episodes didn't air on TV. If they were DVD/bluray only. The Outlaw Star episodes I can understand due to that rule, but To Love-Ru 2016's final episodes aired as an hour-long special on TV. I'm pretty salty about it being separate, obviously. They have their own rules but apparently pick and choose when to ignore them.

I'd say you probably should have clipped the quote from the top instead of the bottom since the first part wasn't relevant to this particular topic, but no worries! XD

Thanks for mentioning that there are established rules for the database. I was able to find the Manga Database Guidelines. I don't really see anything in there that supports having all of Genshiken as one entry, but I don't really see anything supporting splitting it. Do you know of any other rules that are out there or if I might be missing something?

Yeah, I should've quoted better lol. Half awake.

Mostly what I've read was specifically for anime lists TBH, but it would make sense for them to be similar. Reading that link, it seems the details for manga are kinda vague on this. But to me it makes logical sense to split them. Genshiken original manga was 2002-2006. That should be listed as "Genshiken". Then there was a 3 year wait before Nidaime started, 2009. 2009-2016 should be a separate entry. Different story, different characters...different manga. I just dont' see any logic to keep them as a single entry when they're clearly separate things, and are marketed as such.

Edit: Some people will probably say "they continue the chapter/volume numbers from where the initial Genshiken left off" as you mentioned. However, a lot of other anime and manga do that (Fate/Zero and UBW anime for example) but those are still separate entries because they were released in parts. So using that as a reason, is inconsistent with almost every other case where that happens.

No argument here. And yeah, I was just reminded of another manga example that's very similar to Genshiken (though it was a much longer wait for the continuation at 16 years): Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc

I'd really prefer a split, but I don't know if it's going to happen. At the very least, I'm hoping that if they ever DO make a "Sandaime" or whatever that the Genshiken entry isn't put back into "Unfinished" status again. -_-

Huhuhu... it's been so long and one of few manga that I've been reading for so long since 2008. Been sensing that it's gonna end since the ending of Madarame harem. XD

I'm gonna missed this series. Hope they will at least made an anime adaptation for the rest of the manga story.

You know, the girls ARE real otakus. Sure, they love yaoi stuff, but that`s the most hardcore kind of otaku there is. Also, in the original Genshiken series, most of the guys were obsessed with "girl on girl" stuff.

Too bad it will end, though. I must admit, I read this mostly due to Madarame being included in the main story, but I loved the show while it lasted. Madarame finally got a proper "ending", then a stupid harem route with a weak ending (Will not go into too much details to avoid spoiling)'

I wonder if the manga was cancelled because Madarame isn`t going to be a part of the story anymore...

The show is aimed at young adults (men), though. And fujoshi in real life are pretty much like how they are in the show. It gives the male viewer a chance to see how the hardcore female otakus are. They objectified the heck out of the female characters in the first season, as it focused more on the male fans.
