It's called Marie Atoniette syndrome, but the way anime depicts it as happening within 10 seconds is pretty bizarre lol Either way, it depicts emotional instability and comes as a result of trauma, over pressure, pain/torture, excessive distress, etc. |

| Well I can't get tired of this cliche since my son has white hair and looks so cute. Also, like some have mentioned, there are many cases where the depiction of white hair is used as some sort of symbolism. I have noticed, at least based on some of the shows I have watched, characters with white hair have deep rooted emotional ailments. |

| I wouldn't exactly say white hair is prevalent. It's one of the rarer hair colours, although in general anime hair seems to be quite exuberant. It makes sense for some characters, wherein they undergo a lot of stress and so their hair turns white due to this - although I usually dislike the handling of it. It seems to be the case that a lot of them spring their white hair overnight, which isn't how that works. And then there's a lot of characters that have white hair just because. Authors like making their characters use the full palette so inevitably there'll be a bunch of them that end up having white hair. I don't really spare it much thought, overall. It's not something I take note of. |

| Because it's a rare hair color and not everyone will look good with white hair. There are some celebrities (especially K-pop Idols) who have white hair and still look good with it while some don't. |

| Always white hair due to torture, stress and psychological breakdowns... Dunno, maybe it's to do with symbolism and all that shizz? I just think they do the Marie Antoinette thing because white hair looks pretty cool in anime. Weirdly enough though, despite all those characters transforming due to stress, it actually makes them look cooler and hotter- with HxH Knov being the exception...he's the reality... It never really bothered me tho tbh, but what does bother me is the changing eye colour thing...like when a character's power is activated or they turn evil or something, their eye colour changes. There must be some other creative way to visually illustrate it?? |

| I think it's not a bad way to mark a character as special or somehow otherworldly, and getting your hair turned white from extreme trauma does happen in real life. |

| This is called Marie Antoinette syndrome and is a real thing. Also you forgot to mention Tokyo Ghoul, Gosick, Monogatari Series and Katanagatari. But overall, I don't think it happens that often. At least less often than harems and tsunderes. |
