in my place anime fans just blend in, including me. because here you're either a mainstream american fan, k-pop fan, or obsessed with local love teams. but I try to differ.

i can't tell you HOW MANY TIMES i've gotten these phrases

"i can't believe you're this big fun black guy and you're profile is full of all this anime"

"you don't look like someone who watches anime" <--- another person who'd met me offline through another website

"you don't look like someone who's into anime" <--- someone who i know online who i sent a pic too

"if i' didn't know you, and i saw you, i never would've guessed you'd be into anime"

"you sound black" <--- someone hearing my voice for the first time on skype

"HOLY SHIT, YOU'RE BLACK!" <--- again, someone hearing my voice on skype

i guess when you're 6'4 and black with a deep ass voice you're only expected to like movies, sports r&b and hip hop, and not "my waifu anime" :(

even when i let people know i like anime, i usually have to prove it too them, cause its like, no one ever immediately believes me cause i look so ghetto to some ppl xD

but theres TONS of anime fans here, and many big cons, so im good overall

XD I'm black too but at my school anime and manga is pretty popular

There was this one guy reading bleach in the computer lab at our college lol

I can't blame him to be honest, I have a similar perception of anime watchers too. I tried to open up my narrow-mindedness by attending an anime society event during my freshers. The room was literally full of (in the nicest way possible) typical anime fans - over weight nerds and asians (not too sure of their exact nationality, so I'll leave it there).

Despite attempting to strike conversation with anyone, I noticed that I was probably the most normal guy there.

It's a shame, because I'd love to meet anime people who have more to talk about than just... well.. anime, lol.

Also, I have to say, your relationship with him is adorable! ;)

But here the thing, my profiles are always covered in moe and ecchi, not manly shit that us black guys are usually associated with

If I had shounen like bleach n dbz on my profile ppl wouldn't be so surprised

"you're the hokage? but you look like an idiot?!" a cute idiot tho

"you're 50? but you look like you're in your twenties!"

Anime - it's not something that can be thought of in a hall for conferences. It is made out of strange juices current from the brain of animators.

I do not have an experience quite on that scale but I have gotten strange looks for watching cartoons/anime at the library before. It's just the stigma attached to the hobby.

I've gotten the exact same reaction from some people. I had somebody straight up tell me that they thought I looked way too high-maintenanced, and when I admitted that I was an anime fan, it came off as a huge shock to them.

I think when people say this, they usually have this misconception that all anime fans are fat, ugly, wear glasses and have poor hygiene. That's just a stereotype and it doesn't define ALL anime fans (except for the glasses part. I do wear them because of my poor eyesight, though I also wear contact lenses, which can also hide that fact.)

I'll admit that I care excessively about my physical appearance. I shower and groom myself almost everyday and I love makeup, fashion, and heels. I like putting an effort into my appearance because it makes me feel confident. I don't really go around advertising my love for anime and only talk about it when it comes up in conversation. I don't want to be lumped in with the crazy fans, so I generally keep it to myself.

Bad weebs have given anime fans quite the embarrassing rep
It's like, you can wear comic shirts no sweat, but people start glancing at you weirdly for owning an anime shirt. Given, I only own a couple, but still, when one of them is K-ON, you get some stares. Anime isn't nearly so mainstream as comics are, or comic book adaptions, and never will be, so ofc we're the weirdos.

Other than my wearing anime shirts occasionally and musing about anime in conversations sometimes I look and act relatively normal.

Your classroom friend kind of has a point.

A lot of anime fans I've known are very.... how to put it kindly.... uhh, flamboyant.

I've never encountered somebody who's obviously an anime fan outside a convention. Even on a regular anime people gathering people don't have obvious markings, except for a few that come with anime badges. I have met a few that watched anime in public randomly, and found common interest in anime during a conversation a few times.

Are they really so flamboyant in your country?

In my area, if you are not watching anime or not knowing what it is, you are the abnormal one.

well, I'm not sure how one normally dresses to distinguish they like anime... But I don't wear anime characters or titles on my t-shirts or say or do any witty remark that indicates a specific manga/anime if that's an appropriate answer or not..? I do occasionally like to spark up a question on that topic if I feel like making a conversation starter though. :)

I get this a lot when people see my phone charms. I don't get the point of plastering anime all over my shit. At the most, I either have a charm or two on my phone or one on my backpack and the only remotely "anime" shirt I have is Blazblue which I rarely wear.

But yeah according to other anime fans I meet irl, if you like anime you gotta let the world know? That's not the kind of life I lead :/ Anime shirts don't go well with half of my eyeshadow palettes either so psh.

Well, anime fans in west are now growing community.
At the moment beeing interested in asian comics might be conidered strange
because of how much japanese tend to hold their goods for theirself,
thats why many people have no idea what it is or what they know is
based on pictures or short clips people send in the internet.
Many times one of those pictures is from echhi or hentai and after seeing
this people tend to believe that every other comic is the same.

You can't demand from every single one to be open minded.
Japanese people have dramaticly different culture from what we
are seeing in west. It's in human nature to reject what is unknown,
and those who could resist it probably discovered completly new media ^.^

I'm a pretty weird person as it is, and everyone around me knows it. In 7th grade, I basically labeled myself as an anime fan when I started fangirling over Digimon basically every day. So all the people around me always knew.
it also helps that I'm constantly labeling myself as a nerd--I mean, I read all the time and watch anime a lot too, so it's hard not to think of myself as that.
