Ive noticed most anime fans are very specific about what genre they will watch and will not tolerate unique art. I don't think this is a problem with fans of western cartoons.

Well I'm not close minded since I do like watching multiple genre. But there are some genre I don't watch anymore or got tired of like for example: moe, and excessive fan service.

Closed-mindedness extends far past fandoms due to it being a result of ignorance. This is something that affects humanity in every sense. Only those who are adventurous and willing to learn are the ones who seek enlightenment.

This is honestly far too deep for me to write anything other than a couple of cheesy lines. Too much effort required - essay format blah blah blah.
I'm also filled with pure-hearted ulterior motives.

A lot of people won't watch shows that don't use the typical art style they're used too such as older anime or stuff like Kaiba and Ping Pong.

@Waifu_Strangler

Personal preferences are a b**** sometimes. You can't make people like what you like. Each and everyone has some preferences that they have. People can't be forced to watch a series they don't enjoy.

Ah, thanks. Yeah, then honestly I'm not sure but we're in agreement on this.

I can't tell you the amount of times people have turned down my suggestions because the anime was too "old". Fuckin' kills me, man.

That exists outside of the weeaboo fandom.

I only read detective and romance fiction. I know people who completely don't watch/read genres.

Oh yeah I have that issue a lot when making recs. It's especially painful when the anime otherwise is perfect for what they want.

I don't think of it as "close-minded" more than being "shallow". What can I say....I've been spoiled too much by the gorgeous eye candy that comes out these days. :/

But if anime is a visual medium, I think it's fine to be shallow about the styles you like. Why bother watching something if you detest how it looks? Aesthetics ARE a big deal.

There is a vast difference between being close minded and liking a certain genre. I absolutely love slice of life anime which 90% of the community hates and most of what I watch falls under the SoL genre, but I still do watch other anime. I refuse to watch things that rely on drama though. I just don't like drama, I don't like watching something that makes me heart hurt. That's all.

Never thought I'd see such an adorable chibi Yang.

OT: You really don't have as much variety in the majority of Western cartoons (there are exceptions, I'll admit, but they're rare). Usually, anything trying to be different that somehow manages to get greenlit winds up cancelled within its first few seasons, if not its first, only to be replaced by cartoons with more mass appeal.

Anime just happens to afford a lot more viewers the luxury of being oddly specific with what they enjoy.
Then again, this is just my opinion.

Was about to say, if you enjoy story, books are great for that. Even if you don't want to read western book there are alternatives like manga and Light Novels.

But yeah animu is great.

Remember Dexters Lab, Power Puff girls, Courage the Cowardly dog, Ed, Edd, N Eddy, and Johnny Bravo? All of those were the main shows on CN at one point yet all were very different aside from certain elements in the humor.

Heh, yes, I loved most of these.

Still boggles my mind how a show about a man trying to get laid was able to be on a kids' network. XD
..............I guess that's why only the first season was good and then they made it really dumb and childish after that. >:I

That's an issue I encounter, too. Some people downgrade a show just because they dislike the genre or refuse to watch shows with unique art styles like Kuuchuu Buranko and Ping Pong.

I also dislike complaints about not reading manga because the pictures won't move. Even after expressing disappointment from watching an anime that concludes with a cliffhanger, it's always the same excuse. But I won't dwell on that too much, since it's to each their own.

The only cure is being more a malleable person unafraid of changes and stepping outside of one's comfort zone. Try something new at least once.

Sorry what? Do you mean anime fans are not open to other genre or are we talking about art as in animation, visual and design? I do watch many type of genre though.
But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

There's nothing idiotic about going into an anime that you're likely going to detest. Critics do this all the time.

I kind of agree. I notice it's common for anime fans to consider only hand drawn animation as animation and automatically consider all other types of animation not real animation and not worth watching. Like there are anime fans that always make a big deal if an anime is full CG. Also there are anime fans that stick to watching a specific type of artstyle and character designs. So shows like Kuuchuu Buranko, Gankutsuou would automatically be a big turn off to them. I also notice that anime fans tend to gravitate only to western cartoons with a generic anime look like Avatar, Teen Titans 2003, Wakfu and scoff at those that aren't like that like Adventure Time and Steven Universe even though those shows have interesting backgrounds and character designs. I always see anime fan art of Adventure Time online and I think to myself if Adventure Time looked like that I probably wouldn't have started watching it. It would just look similar to any typical anime that comes out every season. Finn looking like a bishounen shota and PB, FP and Marcie looking similar to any moe girl characters just with different colors.

I could see most anime fans automatically turning up their noses at the art in Long Way North just because it doesn't have a typical anime look.

I used to be a big fan of fan-service and ecchi anime at one point. But I stopped watching them because they're using the same tropes and crap all over again. There was lack of innovation when it comes to ecchi.

Looks a LOT better to me now. XD

Now look, I do love animation of many styles....but I hate Adventure Time's style because they don't even look like people.

The funny thing is, the characters in the show STILL look very similar to each other: dot eyes and noodle limbs (my god do I hate the noodle limbs lol)

So the style really isn't doing anything different than what an anime fanart would do.

And actually, Adventure Time AND Steven Universe have a HUGE fanbase in the anime community. I'm just not one of them. I feel bitter towards this both of these shows because my best friend has stopped liking anime and only worships these stupid weird-looking cartoons....so I can't even fangirl with her anymore and it SUCKS.

ITT: how dare people have their own taste in anime.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

That seems to be a problem with aime fans in general, not considering other Western shows as proper animation. The art and animation in adventure time is unique and works so well for the show, I can't imagine people putting it off for that reason :/
