Why is the Student Council in school anime so powerful?

For those of you who watch school anime, a lot of the time the student council is portrayed as having incredible power. I can't remember any examples off the top of my head except for what I am reading now. Yamada and the seven witches is a great example of this. In this anime/manga the student council is said to have "absolute authority" and is able to do whatever they want. Is their a reason why so many anime represent the student council being so authoritative?

My guess is that in school anime, the characters are typically just a bunch of students, with maybe a few teachers. Having a all powerful student council makes things interesting by having a group of people with a lot of power instead of a bunch of kids who are all just equal. (I can not phrase what I am thinking very well.)

What are your thoughts?

I don't remember ever seeing a school council not being restricted to set rules, there's was some leeway in some of them but nothing notable. And then most of those anime use it as a plot mover, 'something to overcome', K-On, Love-Live, etc., it gets pretty banal.

It's just lazy writing to set up boring and predictable conflict.

The author wants to incorporate some sort of power struggle into the story, but with high schoolers the only real "power" they could have would be something like the student government, so it's exaggerated to be more powerful, important, and intimidating than it really is in order to create some sort of dilemma that has actual impact within the context of the story.

It just sucks though, because every human being who's actually attended high school in their lives realizes that it's just a pretentious over-dramaticization, and the impact it's supposed to have on the story feels lame and forced.

Or maybe things are different in Japan. Idk.

It's not student council being powerful that's my problem, it's student council president and his/her gangs being total jerk/abusive/cruel to the main character just because he/she's the main character that gets on my nerves the most.

Example : 80% shoujo manga set in school, most otome games, some shitty LNs, and that trap manga i've forgot about.

Because in Anime/Manga/LN, most students' activities and responsibilities have little to no adults involvement. eg schools in japan have no janitors so each class has to leave one or two students after school to clean their classrooms. Also, most students join clubs, and each club's funding is subject to student council's decision, even when the cultural festival hosted by student council with minimal teachers' involvement takes place, where clubs create kiosk and showcase their activities and classrooms make thinns like maid cafe, haunted house etc.

Besides funding, even the creation of a club needs approval from student council.

I am sure some of these are true, but not sure about whether ALL of them really happen irl. And there might even be more things that are up to student council.

Well they stand in the highest level of hierarchy out of all students in school, so according to anime logic they should have incredible power.

From what I've read in real-life schools it's control over funds that gives student councils whatever power they might wield. The dominating iincho and her circle of lackeys is an anime trope. For a contrasting view, watch the first episode of Juuni Kokuki where none of the students want to be the class president so the job falls to Youko who is too weak-willed to object.

Because adults in anime are boring, but they need a sort of power to give to certain characters, if the story needs it.

You don't get into Student Council without the ability to oppress.

Jokes aside, it's just exaggerated to make things more interesting.

The real-life STUCO in Japan actually do have a lot of authority though, unlike the U.S. schools I attended to, but "absolute authority" would be going too far.
