Magnetic Rose, Stink Bomb, and Cannon Fodder have also been combined to just Memories.

What happened to the forum topics for Stink Bomb and Cannon Fodder? I hope they weren't just deleted.

The OVAs (e.g. Animatrix)that will be merged, will their individual stories/episodes be listed in the Additional Info or in the main synopsis? I think listing the individual stories after the synopsis is the cleaner alternative rather than listing them all in the Alternative Titles which will make it look quite unwieldy.

How about the sweat punch OVAs:
http://myanimelist.net/anime/1077/Sweat_Punch:_End_of_the_World
http://myanimelist.net/anime/5633/Sweat_Punch:_Garakuta_no_Machi
http://myanimelist.net/anime/1934/Sweat_Punch:_Higan
http://myanimelist.net/anime/1072/Sweat_Punch:_Kigeki
http://myanimelist.net/anime/1976/Sweat_Punch:_Professor_Dan_Petrys_Blues
Shouldn't those be merged too?

Or Megazone 23:
http://myanimelist.net/anime/1935/Megazone_23
http://myanimelist.net/anime/2773/Megazone_23_Part_II
http://myanimelist.net/anime/2774/Megazone_23_Part_III
Its practically one series is it not?

Same goes for the Devilman OVAs... perhaps excluding Amon, but even then definitely the first two:
http://myanimelist.net/anime/2354/Devilman:_The_Birth
http://myanimelist.net/anime/2355/Devilman:_The_Demon_Bird
http://myanimelist.net/anime/2356/Amon:_The_Apocalypse_of_Devilman
I know those were released years apart but OVAs are released in an irregular fashion anyway... see Hellsing ultimate.

Also what happens with Saber Rider? Will it be kept? Its also a macekred US version of a japanese series, sth like Robotech... and Dragonball Z(U.S.) doesn't it obviously fall in the US edit category?

Personally I feel that Kara no Kyoukai should be merged too as a serial movie, but since it is a theatric release I guess it falls on that category of the new guidelines... a pity... its probably the only guideline I disagree with. Serial movies, like Kara no Kyoukai or the new Evangelion movies should be merged IMO.
Finally, I agree with what Ran said about listing the individual stories, if that's what they are, in the merged entries synopsis... Memories for example should have a list of the titles of the individual parts, as should Animatrix, or the Sweat punch OVAs if they are merged.

The Sweat Punch OVAs all have different airing dates, so they appear a bit different compared to the others which were all originally released in one package at the same date.

But regardless of whether they were released as singles or as compilations, they should still count as part of one series imo. Even if they are not related, they all share the same title after all, so grouping them together isn't too far fetched.

As for Megazone and Devilman, if they can be considered as a single series, I would certainly opt for a merge of them. Likewise with KnK and the NGE rebuilds. even if those are movies they are still clearly part of a series with a single story, so dividing them up doesn't strike me as being reasonable.
Especially since we already group together these OVA compilations like Memories and Megatokyo, which all have different, unrelated stories, there should be no reason not to group together stuff that is obviously parts of the same story.

i disagree with the removal of Bakugan: New Vestroia since it is a continuation of the series even if its not in japan at this point in time but New Vestroia is set to air in japan Spring 2010 on TV Tokyo like the original season did so it will be getting there in the future so its not just intended for the north american market since japan will have it and it is a sequel to the first season which they made.

Why don't you use anidb as source?

But Devilman:

http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=1659

Gundam movies:

http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4165

If follow anidb, it will be more easy.

And what about all those OVAs and specials and whatever else that anidb has merged in their parent entries... should we go like that? Its already decided not to AFAIK, otherwise it would be on the new guidelines. Also just because anidb does sth it doesn't mean everyone else should do the same... anidb has its way of doing things, MAL has its own.

But that's already what happens with the specials... I don't get what you are trying to say there... anidb has them all in the same page, MAL has them seperate, and should be kept seperate if we want them in the database, there is no way to merge them in their parent entries.

About the devilman OVAs your point is a fair one, I haven't seen them, I'm only saying this based on what I've heard about them. And I've heard that they are the same story, Anime-planet for instance has the first two together and the third seprerate. If they are different stories then ok my bad.

As for the ones you say, I haven't seen them, nor do I know about them... so I can't say.

Some more stuff which will have to be removed in order to comply with new guidelines:

Superflat Monogram and Superflat First Love: Advertisements for Louis Vuitton handbags

Hairy Tale This seems to be a shampoo advert.

Makai Senki Disgaea - Trailer: Because it is a trailer.

Dengeki Bunko 2007 Movie Festival Special: Because it is a advert/trailer for three anime movies.

I hope this makes your job a little easier.

A couple more changes:

Health With Little Red Riding Hood: This seems to be an independent production, and I don't believe it has won any awards, so I think this is safe to remove (I was surprised when it got on the database, in fact)

Cardcaptor Sakura: Looking at the AniDB entry this will need to be split into two, possibly three, separate anime, as there is over an entire season between episodes 36 and 37, and almost a entire season (10 weeks) between episodes 46 and 47, with the first Cardcaptor Sakura movie airing in the time in between those two episodes.

I would disagree about the Dengeki Bunko 2007 Movie Festival Special. Its not a trailer its more of a special combining the characters for the 3 movies together. Yes its to promote the movies but it is not a "trailer" or a promo. Also according to the info page it says it was sold on DVD as well, so that would seem to fulfill one of the new DB requirements. I would liken it to the Rumic World special which combined characters from Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha.

I also disagree with combining Shugo Chara together. The series has run continuously but they did change the titles in between to suggest they were different. Plus the format for the 3rd season in particular is quite a bit different than the previous seasons, with a reduction in the episode length and the addition of live action elements.

I like the other changes and combinations. Many of them are long overdue. Particularly getting rid of the cartoon Lady Death.

I think I'd rather go with ANN entries than AniDB.

In any case, I disagree with the suggestion that Shugo Chara! entries to be merged. Across many sources, the three Shugo Chara! entries have been listed not as one series, but as separate ones. This is also evidenced by changes in the titles.

Then add in the guidelines more rules regulating the split of entries of multiple seasons of one show. According to the single rule for that that there currently is whole Shugo Chara is supposed to be treated as a single entry.

If a TV series is split into two parts and at least one season (~12 weeks) falls between the last episode of the first part and the first episode of the second part, the second part will be treated as a second season and the anime will be split into two entries. Examples: White Album, Asura Cryin'.

Obviously Shugo Chara falls into this.

Just a quick question about Legend of the Galactic Heroes:

Are you planning on splitting LotGH into 4 entries or is it going to remain as one? As it is so large, it can't really be treated like other OVA entires, and it has four clearly defined seasons, as stated on ANN's entry. So, what are you planning on doing to it?

Where did that come from? I didn't see anything regarding the size of an OVA in the guidelines, on the contrary the attitude regarding OVAs favours merges, so why split LotGH of all things that is meant to be and actually is one single series/storyline in the first place?

There is nothing about OVAs in the guidelines because 99% of OVAs aren't large enough to be affected by the "seasons" rule. There are only 6 OVAs which have enough episodes to split up into "seasons" the same way TV anime are (I am assuming a minimum of 24 episodes). 3 (half) of those entries are related to Legend of the Galactic Heroes (the main series, A hundred billion Stars, A hundred Billion Lights and Spiral Labyrinth).

The other 3 entries are Cream Lemon (a hentai), Kompeki no Kantai and Alice in Cyberland. None of these other entries started after 2000.

So there was no real need to make a seasons rule regarding OVAs, as Legend of the Galactic Heroes is pretty much the only thing that would actually be affected by such a rule.

As for the second point. I feel the same way about Cardcaptor Sakura, but if we go off the rules, that anime will have to be split into at least two entries, one which ends at episode 36 (Sakura's Wonderful Christmas), and one which ends where the entry does at the moment. This is despite the fact that if I was going to split Cardcaptor Sakura into two entries, I would make the first entry end at episode 46 (Sakura and the Final Judgment), rather than 36, as that seems to be the point where a season split should be made, rather than the rather inconclusive-sounding episode 36.

Other large anime have clearly defined seasons too (in terms of TV broadcasted ones, such as DBZ). I don't see how splitting up LOGH serves any purpose. The "seasons" don't even have distinct names to them, unlike other series where giving a new name provides the arguement that it is a "sequel" series (i.g. Code Geass, Vandread, etc).

There's another consideration here: the seasons rule seems to only be worked for TV series, and not for a home-delivery production service that would obviously have gaps in its distribution, as with the LOGH OVA.

The Hobbit should be removed from the deletion list due to its Japanese release in July of 1978, not too long after the U.S. release (see IMDB entry on the feature). I believe additional works by Topcraft (The Last Unicorn, etc) also have Japanese releases, and I will see if I can confirm them. Until such time as this provision of the new guidelines is clarified, please consider removing them from the list.

Robotech: Sentinels II shouldn't be removed here's why:
Simply change Robotech: Sentinels II -> Macross: Sentinels II
Or you can even leave it as Sentinels II.
Sentinels II played a very important role in summing up the Macross Saga (which will soon be merged into Macross).
Reasoning why Sentinels II should not be removed: *Spoilers*

Then what's the point of having guidelines if they should be disregarded? Having different subtitles for various seasons of one series is nothing unusual, all 7 seasons of Ranma 1/2 have them but it still remains as a single entry. If it is such important condition for having split entries for different seasons of one show then it should be stated in the guidelines as general rule but following rules in some cases and ignoring in the others destroys whole point of creating any guidelines.

Well that's why some of these guidelines (well just that one) are ridiculous. That "guideline" shouldn't even exist. All the other ones made sense, but Cardcaptor Sakura being split? It's a series, it belongs in one entry! Seasons shouldn't be listed, only series, this isn't Gossip Girl or Lost, it's anime. Just like Shugo Chara! should remain separated, they're separate titles, no matter when they aired/released.

This is just creating a whole lot of mess and confusion where there doesn't need to be, and shouldn't be.

http://myanimelist.net/anime/6607/Superflat_First_Love
http://myanimelist.net/anime/5168/Hairy_Tale

They are being removed because they're adverts for so and so because of the new guidelines............OK.......I've watched all 3 and tbh.....they're anime as they can be. Each one had a story and somehow....the only kind of advertisement in them where just the logos of Louis Vuitton brand and for Hairy Tale.....a bottle of shampoo....just suddenly makes them into stuff that showuld be removed.

I don't mind the Animatrix merge, despite mostly different studios working on each short. They should be merged like Batman: Gotham Knight I guess but it would be ultimately better if they were left as they were as each entry gives us great detail for each inidividual short.....if you take a look AniDB's page for the Animatrix. They just put it all under one thing......and it only gives us a line copied of IMDB.....not that great of a database. However, I only really use AniDB to find out who subbed what. MAL is where I keep my "incomplete" list. =P

I've seen some suggestions....they are either good ones or just out-right stupid....for example is the Shugo Chara......its 3 seasons and not one. To me it will be incredibly retarded for it to be merged together as one on-going entry. >>

http://myanimelist.net/anime/6628/Dengeki_Bunko_2007_Movie_Festival_Special

The entry above.....pretty much uses new animation material.....why would you want to delete it ??

If you do....then why not these (the link below)??

http://myanimelist.net/anime/2724/Daicon_Opening_Animations

Daicon is one of the beginnings of an incredibly popular and successful studio.........GAINAX......will you delete this too ???

The things that really raises the questions for me..........is why is all this stuff happening now ????

Is it because of having soooo many entries of animes it will "clutter" the database ?? OR IS IT because of random personal petty reasons ??

Why has the guideline changed ??

Tthe thing is.........all these entries were accepted by mods.............does this mean that the mods of this site did an inadequate job of assessing entries at that point of time and the reason why the current rule change has been brought is so that those accepted entries have to be re-evaluated. >>

WOW....I feel like a jerk for saying these things but it really raises the question.....why do you care ??? why are you bothering ?? whats the point ??

I don't mind getting rid of them american-production stuff and really glad that "Avatar" didn't make its way into this database....if it did at one stage....I was never here.....I would have been long-gone by now. ;]

@JCDRANZER

The Daicon Opening Animations are in a slightly different situation because they were never used to promote the event, they were only used to open their respective conventions. So, the Daicon Animations can be considered to be music videos, which are allowed as long as they use original animation, which the Daicon Animations do.

I'm not really for or against the removal of the other entries, although I was the one who suggested their removal. I suggested their removal because no matter how good they are, they are still advertisements, which are not allowed in the new guidelines.

I don't hold a grudge against any of these titles, it's just I felt they broke the new guidelines, which I had no involvement in making, other than trying to support the inclusion of stop-motion in the database.

Yeah...I know Daicon are slightly different but I was hoping for some to be off-guard. =P

I was gonna say something but I guess I'll leave that for another day. I know that adverts' main purpose were mainly to sell the product it promoted but then again these anime shorts are really not adverts at all....especially the Superflat ones, which are actually experiments for the new type of animation known as "Superflat".............shoudln't these be inducted into your SMA club ??? What are your views on this flygon ?

Plus those Japanese adverts are really weird.....in that it doesn't really promote the product but give us a story under the impression that is a one-off special, especially the Superflat Louis Vuitton ones. Personally I rather those 2 in particular don't be removed at all......as I would like to look at them and view them again in the future.....MAL serves as a reminder for me as it does for many. >>

Not many know about this whole deletion fiasco atm. I would have been left in the dark had I not noticed that it seemed that some of my planned to watch, watching and completed sections seem to shrink a bit. I'm glad I asked the question as to how and why at the Shorts Club......which pointed me to this thread by a mod. ;)

By this logic then Naruto and Naruto: Shippuuden should be merged. The rule should probably be modified to make an exception, when a series is retitled but essentially has run continuously.

People, they are 'guidelines' not 'last will and testament' to be executed to the letter...

Shouldn't Final Fantasy VII Advent Children: Venice Film Festival Footage be removed as well? From what I got to understand is nothing more than a collection of clips from the movie with no new footage.

About Shugo Chara! and Naruto being merged into one entry, I would disagree with such a decision.

@Aesir- & Skadi:
If a TV series is split into two parts and at least one season (~12 weeks) falls between the last episode of the first part and the first episode of the second part, the second part will be treated as a second season and the anime will be split into two entries. Examples: White Album, Asura Cryin'.

I interpreted this rule as referring only to single 'series'. I granted 'series' to be shows with the exact same title, otherwise it would no longer be the same series to me, but a different one, and therefore that rule would no longer be applicable.
That's why Shugo Chara! and Naruto naturally fall outside of its effect for me.

Please correct me if I took this wrongly, but if I did the mods really need to define the rules better since then every title that has a continuation aired in less than 12 weeks after the 'first part' should be merged into a single enty, and that seems pretty illogical to me.

@Naruleach & Beatnik: The posts are there now. I'm afraid the reviews cannot be recovered though.

@TsukikageRan: We'll use synopsis or More Info tab. I agree there is no need to list them all in synonyms, as it would look rather bad and if one searches for "animatrix" one will find them all anyway.

@Alas86: We discussed it today and we decided that Sweat Punch should be merged as well.

Megazone 23 indeed feels like it should be merged. Not entirely sure about Devilman: The Birth and Devilman: The Demon Bird yet. See @Fishcat

Saber Rider stays as we don't have a separate entry for the U.S. edit. I reduced the episode count from 52 to 51 though (see More Info tab).

Dragon Ball Z (U.S.) also stays as an exception. Please read.

@GirlRanmaLover & Kamon: Good point. We somehow missed that. Won't be removed.

@Fishcat: I always like to quote AniDB's wiki on occasions like these.

...Same thing with every other database issue, such as merging.

But yes, let's not go crazy with merging. If the title indicates the OVA is a sequel/totally different arc, then there is no reason to merge. The issue with anthologies (The Animatrix, Neo Tokyo, Sweat Punch) or recap specials is *slightly* different.

@flygon250: Superflat Monogram, Superflat First Love and Hairy Tale - this issue needs to be looked into and the guidelines need to be updated accordingly. I mean, if they have a plot and they don't just mindlessly advertise, they are basically professionally produced animated shorts for a Japanese audience. Current "No trailers/ads" was meant more to deal with trailers/ads for the upcoming anime shows.

Makai Senki Disgaea - Trailer - while it's called trailer, structurally it's more like an introductory episode. The most important thing about it is that it contains non-recycled animation. Normal trailers are just compilations of the scenes that will be used in the show later. Just like the recently released Black Rock Shooter Pilot. They call it a pilot, but in reality it's just a trailer without a plot made from the scenes that will be used in the upcoming show (of course there is a chance they won't use those scenes later, but it looks highly unlikely to me after seeing it). Please notice we deliberately didn't use the word "promo" when we said what's not allowed. If it's a promo made from non-recycled animation then it can be considered an introductory episode/special.

Dengeki Bunko 2007 Movie Festival Special - see Skadi's post.

Health With Little Red Riding Hood - Seems like it. Will be removed.

Cardcaptor Sakura - All right, the current rule about splitting the seasons was written because of the issue mentioned here. So it's there to deal with the recent seasons splitting. We're not going to split Cardcaptor Sakura, because it doesn't make much sense at this point. We may need to indicate in the guidelines that it's an exception.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes - won't be split, we don't plan to adapt the seasons rule for OVA series. See also Alas86's and Mr_Panda's posts.

@Aesir-: Shugo Chara - see Skadi's & radiantfire's posts. If the creators add a new title and say it's a new season then it'll get a new entry. But you're right, at the moment there isn't anything about such cases in the guidelines. We will add it.

FMA - Chibi Party is the special of the movie, so it doesn't belong there, however merging Kids, Seven Homunculi and Reflections makes sense as they all are specials of the TV series. They'll most likely be merged.

@SpellBinder: Indeed. Will be removed.

@Sobzob: These are theatrical releases. Won't be merged.

@Mr_Panda: As you already know, The Hobbit issue has been addressed here.

@Yup: Ultimately it wasn't released in Japan. And you're saying it was "marketed towards the Japanese market, and was a failure", however from what I can see the production was planned for the US market from the beginning. I can understand all the points you provide, though unfortunately the plot isn't the most important thing when it comes to defining the database. The background of the entry is what counts.

@JCDRANZER: Please stop assuming things.

Regarding the commercials, see @flygon250

Daicon Opening Animations won't be deleted. While they could have been made unprofessionally at first, the authors got critically acclaimed later. Meaning the entry isn't against the guidelines.

Dengeki Bunko 2007 won't be deleted as well, see @flygon250.

And Shugo Chara won't be merged, see @Aesir-.

@Loxaris: Venice Film Festival Footage special can be considered a recap episode. It was also released on DVD.

And yes, you interpreted that rule correctly.

Thank you for your posts everyone!

May I ask a question?
Where the hell is Xinil with all of this?

What exactly does he even do these days?

@SEACATS: I'm not going to speak for Xinil, but he participated in the discussion regarding the guidelines that was going on in the staff club. Some modifications were also applied to the guidelines after asking him about his opinion. And as stated in the announcement about the guidelines: he read and approved them. So yes, he's completely aware.

@Alas86: Thanks. Should be merged indeed.

I am thinking that The Big O should be split into two separate entries, as there seems to be almost three years between the end of the first season and the beginning of the second season, at least according to AniDB.

I dont think the length of time matters, what's important is the intent behind the production. Was it meant to be a 26 episode series or not? If it was, then just leave it alone.

I feel like MAL is melting down into insanity. Is it so hard to just copy ANN or IMDB?
"I'm starting to think mal is run by Xinil generating electricity on a bicycle." - idklol

After watching the Devilman OVAs I still stand by my suggestion that the first two can safely be merged.

@flygon250: The Big O won't be split, for the same reason as Cardcaptor Sakura.

@Beatnik: Funny that someone wanted us to copy AniDB already in this very thread. Every site is different, isn't it. For example, coping ANN with everything would mean allowing live-action... Now that would be insane.

@Alas86: Still, correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I understand both OVAs have been released under different titles, meaning Devilman: The Birth and Devilman: The Demon Bird, not Devilman OVA Part/Episode/Chapter I and II. Merging such instances doesn't feel right, for the reason Fishcat proved in her reply to you on the first page.

Those could very well be the episodes' titles, like ANN says, they both say Devilman: Sth... but I don't think that's so important anyway not when the first two OVAs are so close and tight storywise that considering them seperate entities doesn't make much sense especially in the context of those new guidelines. Anyway it doesn't really matter to me, its one entry... I'm just saying.
