However, on Gloire, one such colony are surprised and unprepared at the arrival of The Zor, a group of beings whom were the original inhabitants of the planet and left following similar near fatal events. Coming to reclaim their former home world, a relentless war erupts between both races that ultimately leads to a cataclysmic showdown and into a no-win scenario for either.

Coming off the macross saga, I think people expected more from the masters arc. It didn't quite live up to expectations, but it's bearable if you are into Robotech like that. The macross saga had a decent story, action, and the characters were more likable. Though it's suppose to be a continuation off macross, masters didn't give me those same impressions all too much.
The story comes fresh off the first arc, after the Zentraedi failed to capture
protoculture the beings that supposedly created them (that being the Robotech Masters) begin to pick up where they left off. The story is also gradually advanced from the macross years, meaning in turn some differences and new characters to look forward too. Dana, Louie, Marie, and some other role characters are earth's defense to the Masters coming.
Animation wise it's about the same as the macross saga, good for its time. If you watched it today, you probably wouldn't like it as much. People generally see this as the "Tanks" saga, so you can expect a lot of ground stationary combat unlike in macross (where many battles were airborne). It doesn't deliver the same thrill, but it has its moments. The sounds, the explosions, the destruction, it's all there. It's just not on that macross level, however.
So overall, yeah this is one of the more weaker Robotechs. If you're a fan, however, you'll probably won't care and still watch this before moving on to the next generation. It's good, just not great or anything.
