And by anime fans, I mean anyone who expresses their love for anime/manga in public. Either by cosplaying, reading manga or watching anime in public, or wearing a piece of anime-related memorabilia (e.g. Bags, T-shirt, etc.)

I've personally seen more females than males that display their love for the medium. Within the past month, I saw a girl in a pink dress on the train, reading what appeared to be a yaoi/shounen-ai/reverse harem manga, another girl who was dressed/cosplaying as Sailor Moon's Minako and yet another one who was wearing the typical "school-girl" uniforms often seen in anime/manga.

It's not too unusual to see males that carry around AoT or Death Note bags, or wear some sort of anime shirt, but that seems to be as far as they'll go outside of any kind of convention/expo.

Yes there was this kid in my class. It was very weird and annoying and literally the epitome of giving anime fans a bad name was this dumb ass kid.

Foreign asians are hardly otaku, or like anime.

It was drooling over the anime figurines at a convention

The term has come to mean several things now, especially in Western cultures. I just used otaku in order to shorten the title of the thread, instead of calling it something like "have you ever seen anyone in real life that dressed as an anime character and/or was reading a manga, or was just wearing an anime shirt, etc."

I go to a convention that's held at university yearly. So yeah, I've seen my fair share of obnoxious people who will use random Japanese phrases in a sentence, or discuss their fave anime School Days while wearing an anime t-shirt.

Wrong, otaku is a derogatory term used for unhealthily obsessive anime fans. Some of these people are so messed up, they would sell their internal organs just to get an action figure of their favorite anime character. I never knew that western countries can modify a language that's not ever theirs.

Hm, well I've slowly been corrupting my school so now pretty much everybody has seen at least three anime... So, yeah and for birthdays and christmas I save up all my money to but anime merch for them that they probably don't want... Hm oh and I am almost always never paying attention to my surroundings, but I always notice if somebody has something anime or fandom related.. Even if I'm not in that fandom. Once I even remember my phone dying on the train so some guy was watching bLeach on his phone so I 'discreetly' watched over his shoulder.. Oh and at Anime Boston everybody was in cosplay.. And there's two anime stores near where I live where I've seen otaku too. And on Halloween I've seen people dressed as anime characters too. I myself always carry around my Code Geass water bottle and Black Butler keychains hoping that one day somebody will walk up to me and ask me if I'm an otaku and then we'll be BFFs for life... Okay so that won't happen but whatever I still carry them around and sometimes my Sgt Frog Keroro purse thing or just manga...

Why does almost everyone on MAL only give negative examples of anime fans they've seen in real life?

I've been apart of a number of anime clubs that have a good number of cool people that don't seem to fit the descriptions or depictions above!

At least once when I was working at Walmart. These two guys came to my register with Pokemon items and were talking about it throughout the transaction.

and there was a guy in my high school class my senior and junior year who was really good at drawing. He talked about it from time to time.

I guess they're just more fun to talk about :P In addition, they're probably the most memorable and the easiest to identify as otakus.

Yep. I was early to one of my classes one day and there was this group of people sitting in front of me and they were discussing Attack on Titan. They weren't exactly quiet about it and I'm sure everyone in the room heard them.
