Is the amount of replies in the Anime episode posts indicates its popularity?

If you will visit the F/S: UBW threads, you will see hundreds or even thousands of replies from MAL users for the episode discussion. We all know that F/S is really popular. On the other hand, Naruto Shippuden and One Piece only get a fraction of that, and we all know that those animes are popular enough. There is also an anime in MAL Top 5 whose replies only garner less than hundred posts and it is rated highly.

What does it indicate?

Does it mean that those anime with hundred replies are just popular here in MAL? Is there a relation between the number of posts into its popularity and ratings? Or those animes are just outliers.

What do you think?

It indicates the willingness of fans to engage in long pointless conversations on who is best girl, why the source material is best and defend against haters who only go there to bash the series.

It indicates how new and controversial it is. That's really it. Older anime that may be more popular on here or in the world aren't talked about as much because most of the excitement and conversation goes on while the show is airing. And there are usually only long discussions when people are arguing.

In other words, if there was a thread with over 9000 replies in it, there will be a "debate thread"

Well yeah. Most of the time.

Although if I were still following Naruto chances are I wouldn't be talking about it every week. Especially considering they're in the middle of a filler arc.

Gintama barely has any posts. Well, there is not much to discuss to begin with. It's just so good. :)

It shows the ability of an anime to draw a vocal crowd, whatever that may imply. It also shows the how divisive, controversial, or volatile an anime may be. The really popular stuff like Naruto and One Piece could get this too if you got the right people in the same topic, but it requires stuff to cause a ruckus about.

Well its because when F/S N aired, myanimelist is still a new website and less people care about posting on episode discussions. Im not even sure if ep discussions already exists back then. And would you actually care about posting in a ep discussion of an anime you've watched 10 years ago? Its the same case for other old popular anime that aired before some users here at MAL developed disorders urging them to post their opinions in every single episode. So I dont think F/S N is actually a good example.

Fate/stay episode 6 discussion thread. 418 votes. 1,229 replies. I say there's some specific priest around that constantly replies in the same threads.

Now I'll use snk for eg. Ep 1. 2049 voters. 1,382 replies. As you can see snk has way more voters. But it still barely manage to beat fate in the reply section.

To be precise the fate thread generate a lot of discussion with the VN vs anime adaption debate as the hottest thing to discuss about in that thread.

So its not necessarily means its popular. It just means it has a lot of fans that love to discuss there.

This is most likely gives a tons of discussions in some threads such as UBW, Oregairu, and Monogatari series.

I try to watch the ones for my favorites, but sometimes it takes me awhile to see a post. This is one of the reasons I joined MAL actually, there really is no good place to discuss a lot of fairly recent anime that people might have questions about. I keep bringing up The Big O, but that is a show that had a large fanbase at one time and has a confusing plot that gives people issues, yet all of the old forums (the only big one left aside from Adult Swim was paradigm-city.com) are dead.

if i remember correctly aku no hana first episode or so, got a HUGE amount of replies (mostly negative) I think maybe depending on how hyped, or controversial and even how new the show is, I remember watching stuff like berserk, evangelion, ergo proxy, cowboy bebop and it had very little replies on the discussion thread yet these are quite popular anime on a whole!
