So the name change thread had me thinking. If you were getting married what would you want to do about you and your partners names? Would you go the "traditional" route of the wife taking the husbands family name? Or something else? Also what makes you come to this decision?

She can take my last name if she wants, but I won't force her. I'm not changing my last name.

As much as I'd like him to take mine, I have grown accustomed to taking the man's last name.

I won't take his last name if it sounds bad with my first name (like people have last names like Butts, or Assman)

I wouldn't want to go a traditional route as I find it somewhat dominating to always be the woman to take the man's name and I just want to fuck tradition.

I thought swapping last names would be cool. I take my future wife's name and she takes mine but it might cause issues with legal papers to have different last names from eachother so I am unsure of that. So my other idea would be either just me take her name or we both have two last names or have middle names replaced. Our original one and the partners so we both have a bit of eachothers identity shared. Third option is make a new name but I am least fond of this idea as it would be hard to choose a name like that or just mash our names into one.

Do you have a difficult last name? Mine is pretty simple and not super common so I don't mind it.

It's not that uncommon for a guy to take the last name nowadays. It would have been 50 years ago.

I know it happens yet I haven't knowingly met anyone who has. Although I guess that topic might not really come up. Have you known any?

Personally, I wouldn't mind changing to her last name if she wants it to be that way (yes, excluding males because I can't see myself in a relationship with another man other than sexy times). I've always felt that my surname is pretty boring.

I actually did go to high school with a guy that took her last name. He had a weird last name and really hated it, so I guess that would be a pretty decent reason.

I'd rather not change mine and I don't really decide about others. If it caused legal issues, I'd think and make others think twice about it.

My eldest brother took his wife's last name in their marriage. It's probably becoming less uncommon.

That's what I was thinking. I personally want her to take my last name so that I can pass on the family name, but I don't think it's that weird for a guy to take hers.

I'd take her's if it was a cool name. That's pretty much all it boils down to as far as I'm concerned. Preferably I'd want my descendants to carry my own family name, though.

You can marry and both keeping their surnames. Anyway, I will never take another person's name. But I might want to create a totally new name that I will use.

It might depend on the nationality/origin of my wife and where we would be living.
For example, a Japanese waifu wife with a Japanese surname would make more sense to me to have her change her last name to mine if we were to live in my country or in (German-speaking) Europe in general, but if we were to live in Japan, I would rather change my name to hers, because literary no one will be able to pronounce it else.

If I actually liked my last name, I would probably convince him to take mine. But, since my name is so common and uninteresting, I'd be fine with taking almost any other last name.

I got married in my husband's country, and women don't change their last name there. Everyone has 2 last names (the paternal name of each parent). When women get married, they keep their names, and can refer to themselves as their name + "de (insert husband's paternal name).

I hated that though. I hated my last name and wanted to change it so much. When I got back to the usa, I waited for my husband to receive his permanent residency so that a name change wouldn't screw up the documents... then went down to the social security office and had it changed.

But... I went into the marriage with a disdain for my last name. I'm honestly not sure how I'd feel if I was proud of it instead.

That sounds complicated @___@

Id probably need a fictional name example to even get it. Is it the first name of the parents used as the last name or is one of of each of the two last names from each parents two last names?

Why would I care? I'm a guy, so my last name is guaranteed to remain :p

But if I ever do get married, I'll let my wife decide what she wants to do with her surname.

Thanks, person who gave me this on another site a long time ago, lol.

It's latin america, so I'll use spanish names.

Names are set up like this...
Natalia Ivana Romero Perez
(1st name) (middle) (paternal last name) (maternal last name)

So
Natalia Ivana Romero Perez meets and marries a guy named
Cristian Luis Castillo Flores.

She will keep her name, but can refer to herself as
"Natalia Ivana Romero Perez de Castillo"
The guy's name stays as it was.

Their children's names will be (1st name) (middle name) Castillo Romero.

It's confusing to foreigners. Hey, imagine how my sisters in law have it. They each have 2 middle names to add to the confusion, lol.

I wouldn't change my last name, and I wouldn't care if my partner wanted to keep their last name.

People who make a big deal about their partner wanting to keep their last name come off as control freaks to me.

It's only natural for a male to want to pass on his name, the same way he desires to pass on his genes. Culture is built on naturality.
