Personally I think 2004 was the peak. (In my Opinion) We had Monster, Ghost in the Shell STA, Samurai Champloo, Elfen Lied, Initial D, School Rumble.

What do you think the best year of anime was?

It would be pretty cool if MaL analytics existed. Such that the average score of every anime title in a given year could be computed as well as the sum of user added favorites. Then graphed in a bar chart adjacent to different years.

Let's see what MALGraph says.

Apparently 1970 has the highest average rating for me since the only show from that year on my list is Ashita no Joe. Fair enough.

From the years available on the poll 1999 has the highest average thanks to the following titles:

After 2000 the highest average goes to 2007 thanks to stuff like:

The more recent years tend to have much larger test groups for the statistics though of course they'd be closer to my actual average. Especiall during the last 4-5 years I've seen so many shows each season + their specials, OVAs etc... that the statistical approach isn't really fair. For example I'm really liking 2014 so far since it had JoJo, Ping Pong, Mushishi, Haikyuu, Barakamon, Sidonia no Kishi, Nozaki-kun and the return of Dragonball Kai. The average rating is still only 6.13 for the year since I just try out a lot of season shows and end up dropping a few each season.

Still, 1999 and 2007 spike fairly high in comparison to the other years with similar conditions and amount of watched shows so there might be something to it.
I probably regret this post by now.

The highest mean is of the year 1989, but that's because of DBZ being the only anime I have there. Second is 2002 with only 4 titles.

Meh. Idk.

I did some custom searches on http://test.animeadvice.me/ with the following parameters
-TV anime only
-minimum 100 scores

Here are the important results of each year, from the Statistics window (sadly no favourites statistics):

Since so many anime air for multiple years, are poll respondents

1. Only crediting the year in which the anime began?
2. Crediting each year the anime ran equally, regardless of when the majority of episodes aired?
3. Giving each year a weighted amount of credit based on what proportion of episodes aired that season?
4. Crediting the year it began the most, with an evenly distributed amount of lesser credit for subsequent years of airing?
5. Some other metric?
6. Most likely, not considering this at all?

it's everyone of those people have there own opinions so all of those.

anyways maybe 2007 you know death note and code geass hated btw just saying that because it's so loved then Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan Baccano and Claymore finally darker than black
and yeah just so many so my vote goes for 2007.

Probs 2004.

Elfen Lied (rated with 4)
Gankutsuou (rated with 8)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (rated with 10)
Howl no Ugoku Shiro (rated with 7)
Major S1 (rated with 8)
Mind Game (rated with 9)
Monster (rated with 9)
Mousou Dairinin (rated with 6)
Samurai Champloo (rated with 7)

Everything after has a mean score of like <6.
