I haven't saw/read a lot of Shojo anime/manga, but the show deals with a lot of subjects i wouldn't consider it to be aimed towards teenagers, it's more suited for adults, drug use, prostitution, there's a character that actually work as a fucking pornstar!
and there's a couple nude shots (breasts)

I'm not surprised that there's too much people who thought it's a Josei manga. it's more suited to be a published in a Josei magazine rather than Shojo magazine.

Because its published by Cookie, or at least I assume that's the reason since the story itself is clearly josei. Still, this belongs in NANA's forums not here.

Shoujo is just a target demograph anyway.

It's in a shoujo magazine, and the magazine decides the demographic.

I still consider it a Josei but yeah, it is in a Shoujo magazine. There are some series that seem more mature or less mature than their target demographic. Perhaps they were planned a certain way but took a different turn? Hunter x Hunter seems to be a favorite of yours and it's a shounen too (also my favorite shounen while Nana is my favorite series of all time. You have good taste!). It has really dark and fucked up moments that sometimes makes it seem better suited as a seinen series. Kids get killed, a main character purposely killed two dudes for just bumping into him when he was in a bad mood, a character who gets horny for the 12 year old main characters when they show their potential for being a strong opponent and so forth. Doesn't seem like it would be good for a shounen but it is in a shounen magazine so it's still considered one. I do think it's a bit darker than a shounen but lighter than the seinens that I've read (Berserk, Vagabond, etc). Nana is just as, if not more, mature than the Josei's I've seen. Guess, at the end of the day, it could be all about what the editors say "OK" to?

Wow!!! Now Nana turned out to be Shoujo manga instead of Josei ( I agree with Don1Joker, Ollyx2OxenFree and jacobpaige): I always thought Nana is a Josei manga because it contain restrictions that aren't suitable for teenagers to read: which is why I always believe this manga is definitely is JOSEI (which I always believe it and there's no doubt about it). -_-

It is Shoujo, and that is that.

The anime is rated R, which means its intended audience is people who are 17 and older.

irs rate that by us idelas in japan ot rate fir teens

It is important to remember that America and Japan (or any two countries generally speaking) have different views on what is considered "mature." Just because a theme would be inappropriate for children in the eyes of one culture, that may not be the case in another.

I've always considered it a series that sits cushily between a Shoujo and Josei, so I'm not really surprised- although it does tackle some pretty heavy and mature themes.

Perhaps it's something to do with the drama aspect that means it edges towards the Shoujo-esque side of the spectrum- Nana has that prominent romantic drama that's present in a lot of Shoujo romance manga, whereas a lot of the Josei I've read or watched subtly tackle pretty mature ideas well, but in a slightly more lighthearted "let it be" sorta way (series like Kuragehime, Nodame Cantabile, Sakamichi no Apollon, Usagi Drop etc.).

They just have less of that ongoing, angsty romanctic drama and feel more relaxing...it makes them seem truer to everyday life, I guess?

The demographic doesn't matter to me anyway, Nana is one of my favourite manga regardless of target audience.^^

I think it's Josei which is a step up from shoujo targeted for older teens/women, so it makes sense.

Wikipedia says that Cookie (the magazine Nana is in) is a josei magazine. I don't actually know why MAL lists it as being shoujo.
