It's cool that we're seeing what the other Strawhat's are doing, but like I'd MUCH rather be watching the stuff unfolding with the marines and Whitebeard.

I doubt this is filler since we get to find out where the rest of the gang have gone to

Nice to see updates on Nami and Franky in this one. Crazy how he's landed on Vegapunk's island! Wonder if anything will happen while they're all recovering and trying to find each other?

So Nami got blasted to a Sky Island that studies weather, and Franky ended up on an island of geniuses and has been turned into a gentleman.
He's basically gone from a stereotypical American to a stereotypical British person XD

But to think Vegapunk, the guy who creates the Pacifistas is also there...interesting.

Next ep is Chopper and Sanji! Yay!

I think the anime can sometimes extend chapters way too long but often it really brings the little jokes and moments to life by giving them more attention and time to shine. From my understanding, the way it's extended these moments from the manga counterpart is awesome.

In the shower today I was thinking about Kuma. Nyon was wondering what fate allowed for Luffy to have ALL of the tools needed for saving Ace. And it hit me, this isn't fate at all, Kuma must have known everything and sent Luffy here to give him enough time to make it to Ace. He intentionally made Luffy feel hopeless and powerless, his goal was to traumatize him and imo make him strive to improve so that he can grow stronger and protect his friends the next time something like that happens. It's no surprise he sent Luffy to a place where he could learn about haki and possibly learn to utilize it. Further, he had an interest in Ace, the first thing he ever did was ask about him. What if Kuma wants Luffy to save Ace and he understood as Luffy was in the moment, he couldn't. It's now clear for the people who probably can't learn haki or at least not to the extent Luffy can, he sent them where they can improve too, as a way of saying they weren't strong enough to enter the new world yet either. Kuma is looking to be a tough love kinda guy! Nami is here to improve her weather manipulating skills and she's already learned how to become much stronger in that respect, even though I find the wind rope concept somewhat troubling. And Franky is going to potentially meet the greatest scientist ever, the one who altered Kuma if I'm correct. It's as if he sent Franky so that Vegapunk will make him strong like he made Kuma strong. That makes me fascinated for where he sent the others and what skills he wants them to learn!

Bishounen Luffy was adorable and as if to contrast Boa's fantasy with reality, bishounen Luffy calls Hancock by her name and says she's beautiful, and real Luffy asks what's wrong with Hammock! Ha! Totally Luffy and Chichi-esque.

I was really glad that Nami wasn't stuck with a pervert. There may be other people on this weather island but the wizard man she landed with seemed pretty isolated. Sure, he may have given her a change of clothes but he never showed once a perverted or exploitative intent and I really loved that. He was just a guy who was good natured and wanted to help and cheer up a young girl who really needed it. Like I suggested earlier wind ropes feel a little questionable to me, I hope we get to understand how they work. And, the sky island itself is beautiful...

Franky's story must have been one of the weirdest in One Piece yet and I loved it. I love Franky so much!! Both the Weatheria island the the Mechanical island were so awesome to look at and seeing Franky immediately turn his saviors into friends who loved how fun he was is great. The way he stood up after being hit and cracked his neck, then said "WHY THE HELL WOULD I KNOW WHERE I AM?!?!" cracked me up. I love how he is proud of his perverted sense of fashion to the degree he'd rather freeze than be untrue to himself in non perverted clothing. And the way we saw the paw print before they stumbled upon Franky even potentially told the story of why they thought he was a monster!

Something really cool was the contrast between Franky and Nami. Franky didn't even have a scene where he reflected on the tragedy that just occured. Nami had that moment where she curled up and nearly cried thinking about what had happened. She too thought her friends and she may be dying. The gratefulness that they are okay, the worry about rushing to their side, it all hit her hard. When the old guy asked her about what she went through she recalled the events again and he felt her pain, so he tried to cheer her up. On the other hand Franky hardly slept as if he did he would had been frozen solid. His first move, that we saw, was asking where he was and then doing that adorably hilarious dance of his and getting the boy and the man and even the dog to dance along with him.

Really liked this and I'm super excited to see where the others landed. It's really amazing for the Straw Hats if you think about it. Kuma is able to send them all to a specific place they may otherwise never reach where they can learn something crucial to moving forward.

Luffy landing in an island with a Shichibukai that ended up helping him get to where his brother's imprisoned, Nami landing in a weather-researching island, and Franky landing in a Science-oriented island... I'll have to give big props to Kuma for transporting them to islands that are perfectly in tune with their needs and abilities~

Franky's Hentai Dance and Gentleman Mode were very amusing and Boa's love fantasies about Luffy's really something to envy him for~

Lots of great comedy this episode. Especially Franky’s part. That song with the close ups of him thrusting in his pants was pretty funny/crazy after drinking a few beers myself. Other people on the bus must wonder what the hell I’m watching lol. God bless Japan.

Also, Luffy calling Boa “Hammock” never gets old xD

THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Filler episodes begin, but that's okay because they're longer versions of the little tie-ins we got with the manga. Although, I'm not exactly sure how I feel about Franky becoming a gentleman because they have no cola on the island, and therefore had to use tea. However, I do find it interesting that depending on what he's fueled with, his personality changes. I wonder what'd happen if you charged him with milk, coffee, water, or even juice. Hmm.

And Nami's insanely violent to people who save her life. Makes me wonder how Luffy's still alive after all this time. But I loved how the clouds just happened to surround her naked body like they knew what areas they were supposed to cover. :P Wonder if those'll disappear at all in the DVD version (doubtful).

@gannoncannon55 I made this post 15 years ago. The episode came out, 15 years ago. I am very much aware, in hindsight, that this is not filler and is anime canon. And depending on who you ask, anime canon is still filler. I don't necessarily agree with that and watch anime canon too, but it's whatever. Everyone has their own opinion.
I reject your reality, and substitute my own.

oh okay yeah, “filler” more in a figurative sense. can agree there, sort of in-between-happenings stuff. but still, character development is character development.
only reason the confusion arose is because unfortunately “filler” is the standard word used to refer to skippable non-canon, as you said.
but yeah, can agree, push comes to shove this stuff with showing the goings on with all the different crew members is fillerish lol. “padding”, perhaps.

@gannoncannon55 Character development only matters if the character development consistently stays (ie. canonically). Take for instance, filler episode 318, "Mothers Are Strong! Zoro's Hectic Household Chores!", where Zoro "developed" and learned that found family is still family, even if you're not blood related. Or 319, "Sanji's Shock! Mysterious Old Man and His Super Yummy Cooking!" where Sanji "developed" and eventually figured out that seasoning sea salt from Aqua Laguna would make his food that much better and is suddenly a better chef. Neither of their "development" ever comes up again and it's not consistent, and it's also a bit of a slap to the face because neither character ever had those hang ups to begin with.

Sites like Anime Filler list weren't really a thing back in the day. Now, we have the luxury of going to the site, looking up the anime, and go "Oh, I can skip that episode because it's red." As for padding, that's One Piece in a nutshell right now. Only adapting one chapter an episode because it's so close to catching up.

Episodes like 418 and other anime canon typically take the manga cover stories and turn them into full episodes, like Coby being trained by Garp, or Buggy meeting up with Gaimon. Nowadays, we're shown them within the episode as a brief flashback (ie. Wapol and his adventures after Luffy defeated him, including inventing Wapol metal). It's unfortunate we don't get more of them, but the Japanese audience rejected them, so Toei no longer does them as solo episodes.
I reject your reality, and substitute my own.
