Can you keep up with the subtitles?

The subtitles are great when feeling lazy and not wanting to consciously translate, or when specialized technical jargon comes up that would otherwise make me grab a dictionary to piece together the missing links.

Any of the reputable groups do a pretty good job of subtitle timing; back when I was still actively translating/timing we always tried to leave the subs up for at least 0.5 seconds after they're done talking. With some shows that's impossible, so becomes more of who can better logically seperate the dialogue so that the user can follow it without having to rewind, even if what is put up on the screen doesn't exactly match what's coming out of their lips (some extreme examples of this would be Excel Saga or Puni Puni Poemi).

Most complications occur when there needs to cultural/contextual notes added, or that there are side conversations that are relevant to the entire context. These can be taxing most on the timer, as they've got to decide how to output all the data in a way that everyone can follow and understand. When that happens, or seems transparent that's a definitive sign of a quality finished product; whether it be from the fansubbers or the licensed distributor for that particular region.

So far I could keep up in every anime I watched, but I have atendency of reading really fast. However, the notes that many fansubbers use make this increasingly difficult and I know many people who can't keep up with both of them.
It really depends on your knowledge of the subtitle language.

I pause and rewind alot.

so I guess I can find it hard to keep up at times. But I rather subtitles, than no subtitles ^_^

Plus maybe its hard trying to read *and* watch the animation at the same time. for me it is I guess

I can completely keep up with it, although sometimes whenever there's a TON of stuff on the screen I have to pause and read it. For example when they're introducing someone and they show their name and stuff I usually pause it and read it all.

Yepp, I have no problems. Except for when they describe something at the top, then I have to pause for a few seconds.

I find that if the subtitles are in my mother tongue there is plenty of time to both read/understand the conversation and look at the anime.

99% of the time I can keep up with them. The only times I can't are when two people are talking and there's a Translator's note on the top of the screen. Then I have to pause it, but how often does that happen?

Most of the time, yes. Usually the subtitles are easy to read and not to fast. Its only hard when several discussions in the anime are occurring. I think that goes with dubs too for me though.

No problems unless the fansubbers really suck at putting the subtitles up where they are not consistent.

HETALIA. dear god for the first 3 eps I had to keep pausing every time someone spoke. The 1st anime to truly loose me within 30 seconds.

Yep. But when it's too long and the speech is short i need to pause.

Nagato's explanations(haruhi suzumiya) was among those i couldn't keep up...need to pause each time and did not understand anything..just like kyon....xd

Mmm..i guess it depends..you see, i can read good and well..but when i find myself spacing out and just staring at the words and not really reading them cause i lost interest is an occasional problem..but for the most part i can keep up. Does anyone else have that problem? lol..watching a boring anime that leads to you spacing out and having to go back a little to see what you missed?

I don't have this problem but not everyone can read 200 words per minute. On occasion when i try to get some of my friends into anime for the first time, or they heard about anime "x" and they want to watch it, they sometimes can't keep up with the text. Its kind of understandable and is more based on a reading skills thing instead of just trying to read fast enough.

I have a different friend who has a pretty nice career in business, but his reading skills isn't the fastest. It all depends on the person imo.

The subs that put in way too much text in one frame are sometimes meant to do that for a reason like for a snap gag or to cover large amount of information that you're not supposed to understand completely at first glance. Those things are meant to make you pause for a minute and has nothing to do with not reading fast enough. A good test to see if you have good reading comprehension would probably be Genius Party - Limit Cycle (ep5).

I seem to be reading quicker, I haven't noticed but because of anime I can read a lot quicker and still remember things.
I just didn't know because I hadn't tried with a book before LOL.
Thank you subbed anime.
I've never had a problem reading subs but my speed has picked up.

Most of the time. I'm used to subtitles since everything, excluding stuff aimed at children under 8 or so, is subbed in my country. Sometimes I need to pause for a second or so if there are translators notes on the upper side, but that's all.

I have met many people saying they can't keep up with the subtitles and would beg me to switch to English dubbing, but I have no problem with it. I am not sure whether most fans watch anime with their peripheral vision or not, but I don't think I am alone in just glancing at the subs then actually watching the show.

Subtitles can be extremely distracting. It's very easy to fall into the trap of looking at the bottom of the screen to read the subtitles without looking at any of the actual art.

It always bothers me when some elitist anime fan tries to say that the only way to view a show is to watch it subbed. Dubs are totally fine too.

Nowadays, subtitles in anime are pretty lengthy, especially during explanation scenes. This has caused me to not be able to keep up with them. Moreover, the skill to keep up with the subtitles has been worsening for me lately. It is more difficult for me to read subtitles now than compared to 4 years ago.

Well since my hobby is mostly reading, I can keep up with subtitles and read the text, except if it's a Japanese TV show. Seriously, why is the screen always cluttered with unnecessary texts?

Also, reviving a 10, almost 11 year old thread.

Over my years of watching anime I've heard people preferring the dub version because they can't keep up with subtitles (Note: I'm not bashing people who like to watch anime dub) . What do think?

The funniest thing about it is that something like this is almost exclusively written by American native speakers which I always find comical.

Edit:
wow, nice necro.

Its easy to keep up now after watching so many animes. The only anime that gives me a hard time is tatami galaxy with its monogatari 3x speed. Sometimes I even need to pause it.

Learn to read faster pals. It is not difficult, almost everyone can achieve this. You don't have to read the words entirely, just a brief look to the phrase and you can grasp the meaning without actually reading it from left to right. Works pretty well with simple line such as in subtitles. Subs of the Tatami Galaxy are not hard to follow up.

When I was younger, we had star Wars return of the Jedi on DVD. In the movie, Jabba doesn't speak in a real language, so there was subtitles of what he was saying below. Kid me wanted to be able to read it without pausing, so I trained. Eventually, I was able to. Now, I'm pretty darn quick at reading subtitles.

If the conversation isn't difficult, I'll mostly rely on my Japanese listening skills and only take a glance at the subtitles.

If the conversation is difficult, I'll mostly be reading subtitles, but my Japanese listening skills also help me to understand things faster.

In conclusion, I rely on both of my Japanese listening skills and English reading skills combined together to get a grasp of the situation yet I voted "most of the time" due to I don't rely on the subtitles alone, there's also one anime I couldn't keep up with anything, Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei.

Honestly I don't have any trouble keeping up with subs, providing they're done properly

There are some subs (not necessarily the anime itself) which don't give people enough time to read them, too little dialogue in a single displayed line

I tend to prefer watching dub if the dub is half decent, as it allows me to not have to focus as much whilst watching anime, but I don't have any issues watching subs
