According to J-Cast, some ATMs of Japan Post Bank placed at Comiket 76 emptied out due to the extremely large amount of the withdrawal by the visitors. Japan Post Bank admitted the incident and apologized for the inconvenience. The ATMs were back to normal in a few hours.

Comiket 76 was held from August 14 - 16. The number of the visitors were 560,000 and set a new record.

What do you expect, its part of their culture. It'd be a miracle if a convention here where I live reaches a staggering 10k visitors.

Jesus Christ those queues are ridiculous. Why would anyone want to go somewhere like that?

You could probably set up a stand or something outside and make huge amounts of money from bored people waiting to get in.

That's a lot of dough for doujinshi (no pun intended)! And I agree with supermario: the anime industry is safe because of these guys.

And looking at the pictures, that's what I call a "sea of people".

A stupid question, but wouldn't it be a smart option to allow Visa and other cards on these conventions to save time and allow more sales?

I don't think they would put one of those card machines on each stand. There are hundreds of them, it would be a waste of money.

A new record..

560,000 people. Seemingly, the numbers always increase. I wonder if there will be an increase to 600,000 visitors by C80. C77 will take place this winter. I doubt there will be a significant increase over this short period of time.

Comiket is getting more impressive..

This is a good note though, instead of taking money out of an ATM, take lots of money out that you would need the day before and hide it somewhere, discreet instead of a wallet so no one will rob you.

I think France holds the world's largest anime expo/convention outside of Japan....France was one of the first countries that embraced Japanese anime/manga culture (yes, China did that before but they were pirated goods)

The endless debate between fans and haters. At one point, after spending a lot of time on MAL, you just realize it's totally pointless.

ATMs don't hold much money anyway. Here iirc heavy traffic ones are about $100k tops. So have a thousand people each withdraw $100 and . . . empty. Even if Japanese ones hold something like 10x that, the sheer amount of people could drain it pretty easily. Really no surprise at all.

Its a shame just over the pond in the UK, Anime is virtually unheard of, having an anime convention attracts really low numbers, the only thing that can measure up is the London MCM Expo I think, that has around 30,000+ people attending but that covers everything from geek culture; comics, movies, games and manga/anime..

The problem is that the shows that make great money from merchandise very often aren't the shows that I'd like to see getting more support ><

The appearance of shows like K-ON, Sengoku Basra and Queen's Blade are a direct result of these peoples' spending habits.

Yeah, I've experienced that first hand. Good thing they refilled those ATMs. I've been at cons where things reach a weird kind of crisis when all the ATMs are empty and you have to wander town to find one or something >.>
