Good to see Ryuuko not having an easy win against Uzu twice :D Things would have been boring if she can beat the 4 devas easily :) Oh and Satsuki's mom :D

Ryuuko isn't very impressive, anymore. o_o

Even after learning how to wear senketsu and seemingly unlocking its full potential, she's still completely and totally outclassed by three star uniforms...

or no uniform at all, for that matter (guy who shoots threading needles).

awesome episode.

so now we have a serious plot, lots of mysteries, pure slapstick (episode 4), brilliant ost, an entire show of unique characters. the show exceeded my expectations i simply love it.

seems like despite having a better relation with senketsu now, ryuko is still not able to use her full potential.

she absored a 3 star uniform but nothing changed.

wonder what will happen to satsuki since it seems like wearing junketsu is very tiring for her

as always cannot wait for the next episode

Good catch. I didn't notice that.

Ah Mako, that girl could bring a smile to my face any day of the week. Probably one of the most lovable anime characters of the year.

If anything, Aikurou and his glowing nipples are trying to even out the fact that Free! didn't have any. (Also, the fact that his tendency to undress makes sense in the context is nice. Weird, but nice).

Also, I think that this episode confirmed that the show has reached the part that I was initially expecting from the series. Makes me glad that I didn't decide to drop it earlier.

PS. Two useful additions:

1) I know I shouldn't mention the animation because it's a new studio and all that... so I won't. But my implication remains.

2) Does Satsuki's suit talk to her as well? If so, I wonder what kind of personality it has, considering that it looked rather angry on this episode. (Also, I'm supporting the implication of it being Satsuki's wedding dress while Ryoko dons a black outfit herself...)

For the people asking how Ryuuko could lose in a full life fiber uniform, well, you have to remember that Ryuuko is weaker than the three stars and two stars from a natural ability point of view. Sanageyama is obviously more skilled than Ryuuko and more than likely they all are. Their uniforms only enhance their talents, while Ryuuko seems to merely give her power because I don't think she can fight better than the boxing club's captain.

Another thing to mention about Sanageyama is that his ability was beyond that of the three star uniform, burning it out. This is also interesting because it could also explain why Ryuuko's uniform absorbs the fibers (to replace those it lost).

This is a brilliant show so far.

Ryuuko's progress has slowed down with this episode.
I suppose it was inevitable; at the rate she was defeating people, they'd never make it to 25 episodes.
I still don't see potential for 25 episodes as it stands, so they may need to throw in a few more twists to deepen the plot.
Before this episode, I thought the setting and plot development supported 12 episodes at best, now I see potential for about 18.

I like that they've slowed down the progress to stretch it out; I just hope they have enough content and action to fill it up while still keeping it entertaining.
I'm happy as long as they don't sacrifice quality in favour of quantity.

Still, some things don't make sense...
Why is Ryuuko, wearing the strongest uniform made entirely out of life fibre, unable to defeat some brat in a supposedly much weaker 30% uniform..?
I can't help but think that both Ryuuko and Senketsu still haven't reached their full potential and there are some levelling-up scenes in store for them.
If they're gonna stretch it out like that, they better make it good.
This show's already packed with about as much action that it can hold, so I don't know how they're going to make that work out.

This episode itself felt like a filler though, with Ryuuko not really making any progress towards her goal - in fact, she probably lost ground by making the enemy stronger. It wasn't too much of an issue because of all the action, but they can't throw in many more of these if they want the show to work out as a whole.

Filler because the character lost ground??? Come on every great story needs these moments to show us that the characters aren't invincible, that they can be beaten, and that they need to grow to overcome the obstacles that get in their way. On top of that, one of the main villains had a lot of character development in this episode and small story elements were dropped all over the place, so I fail to see how you can call this episode filler, in fact the word filler is being overused these days.

I'm not complaining about that, but I just get the impression that this story is not suitable for 25 episodes.

There's nothing wrong with the enemy getting stronger. It does happen in every great battle anime.
I'm just not sure this show's back-story is strong enough to support this kind of development.
It feels like this episode was an attempt to stretch it out to fit the quota.

I guess I'm a bit biased because I was hoping for 12 to 15 episodes and it looked to be heading that way, but this episode changed everything.

Also, It seems you just read that part of my post out of context.
Everything above it clearly explained why it gave me that impression.
The change of pace is a bit too sudden - so it seems a bit too unnatural.

Quite a good character development episode for both Sanegeyama and Satsuki. We also get to see Satsuki's mother for the first time.

The episode has a strong vibe of those shounen exaggeration of the Japanese zen way of martial arts and I think it is executed pretty well. It seems the show is going through round and round of Ryuko getting into her usual over-confidence and dashing action-first mode and then gets beaten up real hard ending with her learning some lessons and growing up a bit. This is the pattern of the last episode and this episode. Are we going to see the same pattern in the coming episodes?
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Like many, I find this not making any sense. When Ryuko first accepted Senketsu in its fullness, she was trading blows with Satsuki on equal terms. Now though she's just losing left and right. I can understand last week since that large dude used carefully planned tactic to defeat Ryuko but this time Ryuko simply looked inept.

With this episode I know for sure now that Mako is an annoying character for me as I actually enjoyed this episode the most as she hardly appeared in it. I know there are alot of people who like her on here and i'm not one of them. She ruins the mood for me and I don't find her funny at all, in terms of comedic characters the homeroom teacher wins in that regard.

Remember Ryuuko lost to Satsuki, so more than likely she's only equal to the three stars in power, but not in ability.

If I'm not mistaken she was tired by the end because by the time she finally harnessed Senketsu's power she had already spent a lot of energy fighting against Satsuki's full power kamui while she hadn't unlocked Senketsu's potential yet. I can't help but feel that if she had been using Senketsu's full power from the beginning, the battle would last a lot longer and who knows she might get an upper hand at some point.

I think the whole thing for this ep is that power isn't enough without skill.. This guy realized what he was missing and found ways to out maneuver her..

I also think during her fight with Satsuki that Satsuki was going easy on her slightly and basically just measuring up her abilities.. That or since she also just got her uniform is yet so unleash the full potential..

Idk, senketsu increase power but not skill and technical knowledge.

The scenes with Sanageyama and Satsuki are so interesting.

When Sanageyama first asked Satsuki permission to fight he was being cocky, he was too proud of his eyes and his current level of skill, especially when Satsuki tested him with the broken piece of her cup and he compared her movements (obviously restrained) to when she was younger.

It's obvious one of his goals is to become an equal in the eyes of Satsuki, it's probably been on his mind since he joined her. The problem here was that he felt content surpassing the level of skill he witnessed in their first meeting instead of aiming to reach her as she is now.

The act of having tea together obviously means... something more than a simple reunion. It would a step up in their relationship towards... something. Sanageyama thought he was ready for that, so he made the promise.

After losing to Ryuko he understood his shortcomings and felt the need to sacrifice the thing he was proud of the most to force himself to reach new heights.

His second battle and somewhat of a victory served to prove that he was capable of standing on the same level as Satsuki, she herself saw that too.

At the end of the episode Sanageyama decides to see Satsuki and leave after a few words, every thing that really needed to be said was made known through his presence alone. Satsuki then proposed the tea herself, that was both a test to see if Sanageyama had really changed and could now continue to grow to become what Satsuki expects him to become and also a promise of things to come, you can clearly see that something between them changed.

Sanageyama for his part understands perfectly what she is trying to say, so he declines the offer because he thinks/knows that he isn't yet ready for/worthy of what the offer promises, but the determined tone he uses shows that he will one day.

Well stated, you are exactly right. A little tweak though, don't forget that he had proved himself when he could appear in front of Satsuki when she thought he was behind. So he had already proven that he had advanced that much to her (and to him); so her offer of tea was not quite a test, but a recognition by her of his improvement. He however, was not satisfied with just this level, and he denied it because both understood that she was capable of far more and that he isn't yet her equal.

Lovely show isn't this, I have been calling this show a parody, but that isn't true. This is a post-modern 80's TV show. It takes all the themes in those shows (which I love by the way) and consciously improves upon them.

Sweet lord this was an amazing episode, probably one of my favorites yet I have to say!

It all starts with glowing nipples, and I'm not even surprised that Aikurou Mikisugi would do something like this, and the way he says Nudist Beach makes one just want more, great way to start a serious episode with some light humor. Nudisto Bichi!

Uzu Sanageyama he is becoming the favorite character of this show, and I have a big feeling that he will have a big part throughout the show compared to the other Elite 4 in the Acedemy, and seeing his relationship with Satsuki makes one think that there is something deep there.

Speaking of Satsuki, I think that it was her mom that called her after her talk with Uzu and looks like the world that her mom is living it is different and more glamorous than Satsuki's Academy, this might be a hint that the world of this anime that has been portrayed so far is way grander that we currently know of. I think the first arc to like episode 13 will be about the Academy and the rest of the show to be rest of the universe like we know back in TTGL. Just my thought on this, especially when its Trigger that are doing this show!

Uzu vs Matoi! By far the best fights in the show so far, and it couldn't have been done better, and to much of my surprise, even Uzu got his own transformation to his 3 Star robe sequence much like Matoi's. No sexual discrimination in this show at all.

The first fight was good, though I had a feeling Matoi that win this after getting brutally owned in the majority of the fight, and Uzu losing it. Also LOL at Mako pointing out Uzu's dick size as well.

The 2nd fight, where Uzu SEWED his own eyes to get a better grip with his Mind's Eye ability just stomps Matoi, and to much of his despair his robe overheats and Matoi gets away, this fight alone will make Matoi think at least next time she is going to fight the Elite 4 again.

Another Satsuki and Uzu moment, like a badass he rejects Satsuki's offer for a tea, and the still the episode ended with gave me a total TTGL vibe. Based Trigger again, and the OST though...based Hiroyuki Sawano!

TLDR: Best episode in the show so far, and Matoi can't win a fight without the present of the best girl in the show, Mako!

It's a shame that the most interesting characters are the ones who are supposed to be defeated, hopefully none of them will actually die.

It's possible that Satsuki's group might become the lesser of evils what with the introduction of other big players like Satsuki's mother, that might indicate to Ryuko and Satsuki working together in the future.

Absolutely not. Death isn't what this show is about. I would advise not thinking too much about this show (and I mean that in a positive way): this show isn't about right or wrong, good or evil, it's about a hero ascending against ever increasing opposition. So Ryoko will eventually defeat everyone we know, and then join forces with them against a greater opponent (probably even above her step mother (i.e. Satsuki's mother)).

In the end I predict that all the humans, both the academy and Nudist beach, everyone will be supporting Ryuko as she advances against the true boss. This show deserves that ending.

Manservice nipple glowing action. That's how you start an episode.

Introduction of Satsuki's mom (?) who even scarier than she is it seems. Some new kickass BGM pops up around her phone call too.

Sanageyama is off to a good start, he already had Viral-like vibes from the beginning of the series and doing a much better job than him by embrassing Ryuko so badly this episode when he went full resolve. Proving The Elite Four is legit, I was afraid Sanageyama was just gonna job early out, can't wait to see how the rest are when they go all out. Bet Gama is insane.

Senketsu's simple pleasures of being ironed was good, I like watching those moments between him and Ryuko like that.

Oh, I expect a character or two to "die", I just don't think that death will matter as much (so no tragic death and meaningful like Kamina in TTGL). And when I say that I don't mean to downgrade KlK, I am only saying that I think what the writers want to accomplish is something different.

Either way. Microwave that popcorn, melt that butter, whatever path they decide to take is irrelevant to me, as the Grateful dead said, at least I am enjoying the ride!

Good episode, a little bit more serious than the others. It's intersting to see an defeated ennemy develop himself and his courage, and do sacrifices to win. That's better than see a "classic" fight plan.

After thinking about it for a while, this is my (partial) theory on what is going on now :

Satsuki is try to recruit Ryuuko into her ranks. As we see from the flashback, Satsuki recruited Sanageyama who challenged her after she defeated him. Satsuki thinks that Ryuuko has good potential but it is not developed yet, this would explain why Satsuki set up so that the club members go after Ryuuko so to make her grow stronger. Thats why satsuki doesnt let any of the 4 devas to go after ryuuko because she is not strong enough to go against them yet and would be killed, and that would be bad. However, when sanageyama got cocky and asked to go after ryuuko, satsuki decided that she could do without him and wanted ryuuko to replace him.
