I'm fairly young only 23 but I generally prefer the older anime not as in the 90s but like 70s and 80s. Their are a lot of beautiful modern anime that really do their own thing but rarely do I find them as impressive looking as say Nobodies boy Remi. That was just beautiful!

At first I thought the Ah My Goddess movie was purely cel animation because it has a more darker kind of look than the TV series that came later on but according to Wikipedia it mixed cel animation with digital animation. I don't really know but my guess is that the characters were digitally painted but the backgrounds were hand drawn and hand painted. I really like the the look of that kind of mix.

The character movements in digital seem a bit stiffer and unatural. Of course if the animators actually put more time and effort into their animation rather than make a quick tv series, it can look amazing, even better than cell. (fate/zero, sao)
I'd go with emobubbles, but someone else already had it, damn bastard.

So the character movements in digital don't seem stiff and unatural, cheaply animated digital stuff looks stiff and unnatural? What about cheaply animated cel stuff, might that too seem stiff and unnatural?

Yeah, I could've worded that better.

I don't know how this scene from Memories was painted, but I fucking love it. It's probably the best Japanese animation I've ever seen.

Pretty sure that is Cel animation. I dont have any sources on it, but just from the way it looks and the fact that it came out in 1995 where Cel stuff was still made a lot.

Sao just has pretty lighting effects the animation isn't very good imo.

Anime is good, fucking deal with it.

Cel obviously.

Also the way 3D animation is implemented into anime right now is so cringeworthy that it will be a long time before 3D becomes "the future". There's only a handful of "3D anime" that actually have pleasing visuals, for instance the Cyborg 009 movie and Knights of Sidonia

You can make the cel look with digital too. 'course it's cleaner, more consistent and less noisy, which some people will insist means losing some of the character, but fuck those people who drown in their own nostalgia.

Digital ink & paint just looks better.

Case in point:

is that Yhwach from bleach ?? :P

Digital animation doesn't have to be bad.

Japan just SUCKS at it.

Rango had an 135mio Budget.. Why not compare it with Avatar, where the blue man group looked almost real.

It really depends on the show, digital animation looks great (More colors) and is easier to produce, but when it is hand drawn with the quality of Redline, than you just can't top that in any way, shape or form.

your your your your your your your your your. Jesus Christmas. Talk about lazy.

Also, cel is FTW. Much like movie directors mostly have switched to digital format for recording, some stick with the authentic camera lens and reels because it has texture. There's depth and that's what I prefer. I enjoy the real animation and work that went into it. I like to see what people drew and painted rather than being fooled by Photoshop and cheats. I like both! Cel is just better.

Also, how can anyone like backgrounds of what looks like real images ran through Photoshop filters and clone brushing low-resolution textures such as wood on objects like doors and floors. I don't know what to call good art or bad art. Digital is less consistent. Cel allows me to be the judge of real talent.

I have much more experience with digital, so this may be true of cel as well, but I love the variety of styles in digital anime, everything from The Tatami Galaxy to Kill la Kill to Space Dandy. However, I also like the rough and more natural look of cel in Castle of Castrioglo and Ashita no Joe, so they both have their strengths, but Inprefer digital overall.

so you admit digital is lazy good ot know

Kinda lazy, yeah. It's no easy task to complete an anime, but digital has many shortcuts.

I just started Fate/Zero today and while I am enjoying the art, not even 3 episodes in and I'm finding inconsistencies that are flaws brought out by being digital.

1) Low resolution wood texture on door as I've mentioned.
2) When the red tea was being poured into the cup, the ending ripple frame was still in place frozen.
3) Moving cloud textures when that lady and her knight servant were at the beach shore at night talking, had what looked like copy/paste textures that weren't seamless with the other clouds, like a circular spots painted over each other while the rest of the sky looked fine.

You can CTRL+Z your way through creating a digital anime, so there's bound to be a less genuine look.

Digital, I guess everyone who has experience animating will prefer this. Meanwhile I love cell animation, it is impractical now that we have digital animation, who can make things so much easier and produce similar or better results.

Digital because it's more versatile, and it made it possible for so much anime to be made nowadays.

I prefer cel animation because I can see the effort put into it. If you've watched stuff like Macross:DYRL, Venus Wars, Gundam: Char's Counterattack, and Akira you'll know what I mean.

It doesn't really matter. If the animator is skilled, they look good either way. What I have a problem with, though, is those digital effects to show lighting with one corner of the screen being white/yellow-ish tinted which decreases the further it goes. That looks ugly, especially when studios overuse it. It looks fine when kept in moderation, but alot of the times it isn't kept in moderation.

I've always preferred the Cell animation style. Digital sometimes looks TOO good, and it doesn't have the rough characterization that Cell-shaded has.

I have an honest bias for cel animation, I just love the subtle grainy look and softer colours. Remastered cel animation is pretty amazing as well, you really get to see the detail the animators put into hand painting and drawing every frame.

I adore a lot of digital animation too but I can't lie and say I'd prefer it over cel.

I've grown to like digital animation more over the years but cel still beats everything.
Digital animation gets annoying when there's special effects wanked all over the screen. Overload. Looking at you Ufotable.

Depends on how it's done.

Digital has less limitations, that's for sure.
You can see some pretty nice stuff and advancements since the cel days.
However I'll never like digital line work

While I awe at some of the improvements digital brings, overall I prefer cel art. The line work is so much nicer, the images blend properly, everything is hand-done and nothing is TOO clean.

Cel animation all the way, some of the anime made in that particular style still look very clean and iconic to this day like Golden Boy.
