I love visuals and how it looks hand drawn. Story is also interesting. But I absolutely HATE comedic moments. I would rather have whole anime in a serious tone and comedy only where it can be done with taste. But here we have excessive shouting which is supposed to be funny. How comedy is handled in this show seriously damage my enjoyment from watching. It's like suddenly smelling poop while eating your luxurious meal.

I had similar problem with Demon Slayer. Loved first episodes which were dramatic and serious. But then they added screaming dumb and dumber which made me not even watch more seasons/movies. Just couldn't stand them and their forced unfunny comedy.
@Andrzej2 That's a "you" problem, both series you're talking are big popular with japanese audience, so it's pretty obvious the problem it's not with the anime or the comedy itself.

@Shinuki_n_Reborn

Because for some reason Japanese often think that characters screaming loudly is a peak comedy. I don't share this view and I have the right to voice my opinion.

Just because majority supports something it doesn't matter that it's right, are you stupid?

Still loving the art, the unusual style, and the major characters. I do have concerns about what sort of personality they're trying to portray on the shaman dude (mostly I think he's fantastic, but a couple of the jokes this episode were uncomfortable), but other than that this is a rare treat of a series so far.

Looks like the "comedy" is dragging the ratings down for this as it's now dropped below an 8.

It's a shame, as everything else about this is phenomenal, but the comedy is so unfunny and so annoying, as it constantly pops up in the most heart-wrenching segments and consequently drags you away from any emotions you might be feeling.

Consequently, every episode so far has been like watching two completely different anime - with styles of telling the story that just don't mesh at all.

In general I don't mind tonal shifts, switching from comedy one moment to a more serious tone the next or vice versa is actually something I really love about some anime. The problem with Elusive Samurai is the comedy's not all that funny. And especially for me the more cartoonish gags with modern elements in this episode such as the little priestess holding up a printed sign, the trains, etc are like a terrible record scratch that drags me right out of the story.

Fortunately I loved everything else about the episode. I was not expecting Tokiyuki to get revenge so soon. The battle was fantastic, both visually and in that the retainers couldn't just overwhelm the uncle at the start and they had to change tactics. That the priest facilitated this and saw this potential in Tokiyuki is the first time I've been interested in the character. Has he had his eye on Tokiyuki for a while and saw this bloodbath and chaos as an opportunity? He's always acting like a big goofball but he's also at times had a slight somewhat sinister feel about him I can't quite put my finger on.

Man, the transition between comedy and drama is unbelievable. I don't know if I'll like it or not, but it definitely is unique.
Visually, it's great, but the cast so far...yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about that. Maybe I'll get used to everything "weird and quirky" as the series progresses

@Teufel I just wanna say that while stuff in the future is used as a gag, it's not just randomly put there,Yorishige see's glimpses of the future, so it is actually part of the story, it's more important later on.

Loving the series so far - the voice acting is very good and still always get a laugh a picturing Gojo's face on the priest during the episodes.

Its good to see the Tokiyuki isn't afraid to literally take some heads with his own hands.

OMGGGGG I CANT WITH THE ANIMATION MAN LIKE CLOVERWORKS IS PUTTING IN FUCKING WORK WITH THIS ADAPTATION WHY IS EVERYTHING ABOUT THE ANIMATION SUCH EYE CANDY!?!? I love it man this episode gave me chills with how cold the animation was😩🔥🔥🔥

I like how Kojiro and Ayako liked Tokiyuki right off the bat and they didn’t dislike him at first I thought they’d be against serving a lord who’s lost his entire family yk

Poor Kunitoki I felt so bad for him when his uncle was beating his face in that’s why bros face was so bruised when those 2 guys were talking about his execution bro didn’t deserve that man😔

The fight with the uncle was amazing man I like how all 3 of them couldn’t take him down since they’re just kids it’s realistic that a child couldn’t be able to take down an adult that’s trained with the swords for years nice touch for me tbh

The 3d camera movements in this episode went hard man I swear there’s so much good stuff from this episode that I can’t talk about all of it without getting tired of typing haha I’ll just say this episode had a lot of good animation cuts especially the parts where the swords were clashing during the fight with the uncle Kojiro and Ayako went OFF🔥🔥🔥

I’m so glad Tokiyuki killed off his uncle that shit was so satisfying to see all for the reason that I thought this show would make Tokiyuki someone who’s too nice to kill but nahhhhh my boy is a KILLER🤣🙌🏽

Shizuku’s eyes looked so fucking pretty man she has the best eyes in this show up there with Tokiyuki😩🔥🔥

The night of the rebellion continues, though it is the uncle of Tokiyuki and Kunitoki's, Muneshige Godaiin, to help the latter escape whilst Yorushige escorts the former out. And where the daughter duo and Tokiyuki are at the heavily guarded border of Kamakura awaiting their time to escape....they just played games like it was never-ending, leaving Tokiyuki to run back to his residence to see if anything remained. But as the hears of no matter who they've worked in the past, be it the Ashikaga or the samurai who've worked for the family, it's all nothing but betrayals back-to-back. The only one Tokiyuki could AND should trust is Yorishige, despite his comical behaviour to see the belligerent state of the Shogunate.

Tokiyuki wanting to improve his martial arts, it's Kojiro Nezu and Ayako Mochizuki who will help him excel. And the first step is to lure Muneshige to Tokiyuki alongside the two kids to face him off in a game of tag to avenge for selling Kunitoki off. The commonaliuty for Yorushige to stop both Kojiro and Ayako to see Tokiyuki's elusiveness as a strength, he's a gleeful monster on the battlefield whilst needing support as a weak samurai in terms of strength. And that encapsulates Tokiyuki's first success fight.

CloverWorks really amp up on their animation game for this show, impressive.

I'm so glad the uncle didn't turn out to be a pushover.

The tone is still a bit confusing but the serious scenes like the boss fight against the uncle are still pretty solid.

I am guessing by the amount response this has and the absurdly high rating
that this must be based on some manga popular with the younguns.

The tone is all over the place, and is decisively unserious despite the violent imagery; and they keep dropping the word "hero"....
and they show all the ally characters who are also young, in the intro. the opening song is exactly like the kind of music I would have thought was Peak when I was 9.... actually not, even at age 9 I had better taste in music.
There are pretty strong shonen vibes... when will the 8 episode training arc start?

I'm really loving the art style! Cloverworks did not hold back at all for this anime.

The uncle is such a scumbag betraying your own family is low but surprising during this era as people were more worried about their own well-being.

What a satisfying end!

ok i take back what i said last episode... the kids are adorable. but THAT BITVH Suwa i get that he's supposed to be creepy and goofy but this knowledge doesn't make him any more likable

the animation changing so often and so suddenly is fun but has a weirdly cheap look at times, hope to see some improvement on that as the series progresses

I have to beat a horse here, not sure if it's dead yet. The match shot from episode 1 has been referenced twice in this episode, and it's honestly making me think this is probably the best match shot in all of cinema, like even better than the 2001 match shot. The first time, it reveals to the viewer that the decapitated head was his brother's, which adds a whole lot of meaning to the scene before that match shot. The second time, it serves as a temporal transition, which is the more typical way match shots are used, and finally lets us see the end of that scene. It's not just a one-off creative flourish, but a seed that was planted with the next episode in mind. I'm honestly kind of amazed how well this series is committing to such a cheesy premise.

Heads will roll, again - yay for the uncle, nay for the brother :(

Tonal shifts, obscene smiles and shota bait multiple times a day.

They've put soon-to be-dead characters in the OP/ED so the seriousness of the whole thing is scarce to me.

"I wanna take him home"? Get in line girl.

comedy in this is a mood killer fr a whole county got killed people dying and my clown dude over here busting jokes. there is a time and place for dumb jokes but not when the mc just lost everything i cant understand this why use comedy in the middle of something serious, i get the creator wants to give clown dude a quirky persona but he should have waited after all this dark stuff had settled , this series would have been better as a Seinen like dororo instead of a shounen the editors at jump must have been desperate asf to had ok the comely stuff after all them killings

In fact, Tezuka's «Dororo» is definitely a shonen manga from its origin, consistently (it was serially carried through «Weekly Shonen Sunday» and «Monthly Bouken Ou»).
I was a happy kid playing tag when I was watching the re-aired anime.

Catching up on this, may have noticed an easter egg there.

It's at 9:38 where the purple and green-eyed characters exchange the line "kininarimasu".

That's a line from Hyouka, could be a coincidence... except that the voice actor saying it was Houtarou from Hyouka, the one who "kininarimasu" was most frequently directed towards. This just feels intentional at this point.

Envy, you've got careful ears (that's on par with Ichikawa's ability in ep. #06).
Chitanda's punch line is "私、気になります!: Watashi, kini narimasu!" (I, am curious about it! / I, want to know it!). Her emphatic way of saying it is distinctive, but the phrase is pretty ordinary.
Yorishige said "気になりまするか?: Kini narimasuru ka?", exactly as you listened.
They're mostly the same phrases, but in interrogative.

Not only that, the latter is also in pseudo-archaic style, as in a historical play for the audience in our day. Such like:

Do you want to know [where your uncle is] ?
-> Dost thou witen [wher thy uncle is] ?

I'd remark that it's not on allusive purpose but just a coincidence.
