Not sure if it's tradition but I remember watching the Bee Movie when it was in theaters and people did clap at the end. But I would say just depends on the person. If they felt it was good they can clap even if it's in a cinema.

Having worked at a movie theater and gone to countless screenings of all types, I can say that most Americans do no clap during or after a movie, with the (as previously noted) exception of special screenings. I have seen it at premiers, pre-screenings, and (very rarely) midnight showings.
By and large though, they just sit there and shuffle out as soon as the credits begin to roll.

The only clapping I recall in a regular showing was my brother, when he thought a character played by someone he disdains was killed off. He was the only one, and had to apologize to me for the embarrassment.

Really? I've never seen it happen. Maybe I just go to the wrong theaters...

It really depends on the movie, I'd say the majority of the time no. But I can recall a handful of movies where there was applause once the movie ended. Oddly enough the last one was RoboCop of all movies.

I live in the US, and I can confirm that most Americans I have come across do not clap after watching a movie. Even if it was a really good movie.

If it's Pee Wee Herman in the theatre, you should not look his way when you hear "clapping."

I've always been under the impression that Americans did clap after films cause some years ago, I'd seen some camrips where they did.

I live in Australia and on the rare occassion I go see a film, when the credits roll, I would start a slow-clap (for luls) as a social experiment. 1/1 times it failed. None of the audience joined in. :<

I guess it's an immersion thing after seeing a good "performance". Only happened once when I was younger when I saw the newer star wars movies in theater, and people clapped because, well, it's star wars. Other than that though, never happened.

Hello, American here.
I've been to maybe 10 - 20 movies within the last 5 years, and for 4 (that I can recall) where most of the people broke out clapping. There was also one where a guy and his group of friends (which was like 40 people) just broke out booing and yelling "that was shit!"
For the 4 movies, it was the following: Hunger Games, The Avengers, Hangover 3, and Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
The movie that got boos left and right: Grey.

I've only witnessed it a few times, and never joined in as it seemed a bit silly, for reasons already mentioned in the thread.

I know I dont, and I dont recall seeing anybody ever doing it, and I don't know why anyone would. like, who are you clapping for? No one who stars or worked on the movie is there, it's just stupid!

Yes. They do.

I went to see Captain America the other day, and people in the theater clapped after every scene when Cap beat an enemy.

Maybe it just happens in the south.

I think it was because Captain America was beating up bad guys and because of the "Murrica Fuck Yeah" Mentality, the patriotism was just seeping out of them forcing them to clap
Not so sure about that. Captain America (the second one) is a legitimately good ass movie.

There's not really that much patriotism or nationalism; I'd say it's more of a great manifestation of this age of sacrificing privacy for security, and the paranoia and concerns that come along with it, that's been growing larger and larger in the US ever since 9/11. If anything, it's anti-government. I really unironically say this: I could see the film being shown to future generations in history or film classes as a period piece illustrating the mentality of our time period.

Yeah I have to give Marvel some mad props for totally subverting expectations by making a movie about Captain America of all people in a narrative that is very non-jingoistic and even critical of American politics.

No not at all. People usually clap for plays more than movies. That's fallen out of our traditions.

I'm not American but the only time I can ever remember people clapping at the end of the movie in a cinema was for The Avengers. People really liked that movie.

And people clap at film festivals, for sure.

The only time I've ever seen anything close to applause in a cinema was in Insidious 2 when Elise pushed that licking fucker out a window.

When I lived in New York I remember people clapping after movies, but I believe it was only for certain movies like Spider Man, The Dark Knight, Avatar..those kinds of movies. Nobody clapped during the credits of Avatar the Last Airbender, that's for sure.

I've been seeing this a lot and I want to know if this is actually a thing American's do after they've watched a movie at the cinema.

Can anyone from the USA confirm this? Any urges to start clapping?
I'm very interested.

Yes, but not after every movie and not everywhere. It all depends on the movie and the place/ people watching.

I sooner remember the kids that don't shut up as well as the people who don't turn off their phones compared to crowd reactions to the movie, except for laughing.

I go to premiers a lot, so almost always the screening of whatever I watch is full. Been to plenty of states and watched movies with different mixes of people.

That is not the norm in America. However every now and again I will see one or two people in the theater who will clap. It doesn't spread though.

Now for premier weekend superhero movies, you will sometimes get a rowdy crowed. Sometimes cheering and clapping at scenes. That's mainly where I have seen clapping.

The Madoka movies in Houston I went to 1&2 and then again to Houston for 3. Those had clapping at the end, but that was a special occasion to most.

The majority of clapping takes place in situations like indie film festivals, and Hollywood premiers. However in that situation there is something to clap for. Since the people who created and worked on the film attend.

TL;DR; No.

If it's good, I will.

If not, then.... fuck it. I'm leaving.
Just need to find out how to quote this every time so I can dodge the stupid 30-character limit.

We clap when there's someone to clap to.

We don't clap when all that we can tell is responsible that is around us, is some guy who turned on the movie projector.

That said, if you have one weirdo who claps at it and everyone liked the movie, it can start a chain reaction, with everyone thinking they're SUPPOSED to clap for whoever knows what reason.

I know that every time I've gone to a midnight movie (a grand total of five times!) the people in the audience clapped, so I just joined in... A bunch of the people at the movies I went to were really psyched. A bunch of people dressed up and everything... Some were even clapping before the movie started.
