I've been seeing this a lot and I want to know if this is actually a thing American's do after they've watched a movie at the cinema.

Can anyone from the USA confirm this? Any urges to start clapping?
I'm very interested.

Well, I'm not from the US. But here in the Netherlands we only clap if the movie was a very good movie. I assume it's the same case in the US.

I don't live in the US, but where I live, in Italy, usually people mock every type of films they're watching, talking with loud voices and discuss every fucking scene of the film believing to be great cinema critics, that's why I don't go to cinema anymore.

I'm Australian and I don't go to the cinema often but the last time I went, I saw Divergent. People clapped. It was weird.

I live in Australia too, and I want to see this.
I thought it was just an American thing...I get clapping to a performance but a movie? That's strange.

What's the point anyway? Even if it's the best movie you've ever seen who are you even clapping for? The cinema employees for pressing a button to screen the movie? I mean it's not like anyone present when you watch it actually had something to do with making the flick, so they don't really deserve applaus.

Of course they do. Also, they do it after bearing witness to a heartfelt speech or courageous performance.

If they clap hard enough, a magic rabbit appears and starts raining 100$ bills. It's an old tradition in the US.

I've seen some people do it every time I went to see the Batman movies, I guess it depends on the movie

On a serious note though, it's more likely that someone will leave early or be heard mumbling to himself about hidden political themes than the entire theater clapping.

It doesn't make sense to applaud for those responsible for the work if they aren't present. Any "clapping" takes place over social media.

Only occasionally. If someone times it just right and the movie was decent they can get an applause going. I think you could get the same affect anywhere else though if you timed your first clap right.

I don't clap and I don't see many people do it either, well I've only been to the theater like 10~ times in my life so my cases aren't exactly fact.

It can happen, it really depends on the movie though. For example, most of the Marvel Universe movies (Iron Man, Avengers, etc) people have clapped at the end. I remember a lot of clapping and crying at the end of Toy Story 3 as well, and rightfully so.

Sometimes, but mostly just get up and leave... Actually, sometimes I see some people cheer at the end, along with clapping.

I guess it depends on how good the movie was.

I remember it happening with The Avengers, everyone loved it. Then again, I'm not sure if Miami counts since it's closer to being considered North Cuba rather than the U.S haha.

I'm going to see Godzilla when it premiers in Australia, if it is a premier thing then I'll know it's not just American's who clap on impulse.

Yes. They do.

I went to see Captain America the other day, and people in the theater clapped after every scene when Cap beat an enemy.

Maybe it just happens in the south.

One time I went to argo in the middle of the day on a Tuesday, I was the only person there. I yelled the entire movie.
I have really funny thoughts that no one will get to hear.

Nah. Maybe sometimes after the premiere of an epic movie with a completely packed theater you get some people clapping but not really. I've seen cheering and stuff when there's a sick scene or cameo in a packed theater during a movie like the one Hulk scene in the Avengers where he tosses Loki around.

Also how many bloody Aussie's are on this site honestly.

The only time you are going to hear or see people clapping is if you are a movie that has been highly anticipated for a very very long time at a midnight release or opening day.

But honestly if you are going to a midnight release for something llike. When you see people camping out and dressing up for the screening then yeah. You're gonna hear some cheering on the level of some sports event. When I went to see the last three Harry Potter films there was constant cheering whenever someone got their ass whooped.

At least that's how it goes where I live.

A more fundamental question would be:
Do Americans use the bathroom ?

OT: I've never been to America. I wouldn't know would I ?

Yes, everyone stands up and claps after anything interesting happens in the movie and at the end everyone starts clapping while shooting their guns into the air, then they continue to clap and cheer as they exit the theater into their hummers. No, I've never experienced someone clapping at the end of a movie.
