That is how you M-F-ING PROPOSE. That was beautifully done. I feel like giving up on doing some fancy proposal in general because, frankly, how the hell am I supposed to top that?

Just a masterpiece of a series in general. Everything was so well done.

To those of you who can't understand why Hachi left, just wait, you'll figure it out. This isn't some one night stand where the guy gets the girl knocked up and runs. This is something they no doubt planned together and agreed to. It's something you don't really understand until you have dreams of your own. Yes, you love your wife, want a family, and will love them too. But dreams are incredibly valuable too. Doing what you want in life is something that's very rare (as unfortunate as it is). I took a seminar where the instructor was away from home 10 months out of the year. During a random aside (there were many), he mentioned that his wife and him had been together for XX years (read: double digits) and were still very much in love. He mentioned the key to balancing the pursuit of your passions and a family was to find a woman who's love for you was deep enough to endure something like that and to cherish every moment you have with your family.

I'm doing a very poor job of explaining myself, but it's something that's hard to understand until you start thinking about a family and start having serious dreams that you're pursuing (I mean actively working towards, not something off in the distance).

The decision Hachi makes is fully in line with his revelation. There are no boundaries. He remains connected to his wife, his mother and brother, and all the people in the Debris section even halfway across the solar system because of love. There's distance, yes, but they're not necessarily separated. It's these connections that enable him to remain strong and pursue such a difficult dream. He can't do it without their support.

I must say that was quite a good ending. Ever since all that terrorist bullshit started happening in the last few episodes, I thought this anime was going downhill. I felt at the end, some characters' personalities took a way too drastic change. I don't like the fact that Hakim lives to get another chance to see the world in another way, but w/e. Love the way Hoshino proposed =]

After reading a lot of these posts, Imma go ahead and read the manga, which hopefully (and most likely) will be much better. Overall anime 8/10.

And best of all, the ending song Planetes (affettuoso) by Hitomi. Such fitting music, shoulda known it was also by Hitomi because of how similar it sounds to Stories in Code Geass.

Loved the series, loved the ending (except for the fact that Hachi & Tanabe's child is not gonna see its freaking dad until it's SEVEN). This show is a true classic.

I've read the manga too, I scored it the same as the anime in a different criteria. Since the anime art and animation, music, voicing, overscored the manga but either way it was a more mature content for the manga over the anime.

That was a happy ending. Especially how Hachi propose to Tanabe in outer space was simply sweet. And less drama than the manga

Either way, there will be a lot to think of when making this kind of genre, as you can see they followed the beginning and ending of both anime and manga, so it's really okay to change the course of event along it, it really doesn't matter. The author says that he doesn't want to make the story go on forever and implies that the readers will have a countless events to imagine, so it wasn't really complete (manga). So don't blame both sides. AS LONG AS YOU ENJOY BOTH which I did, and it was like an alternative story for the anime with same ending.

I wish for a special or OVA episode, after 7yrs on a trip to Jupiter..

Series peaked at 9/10. But in all honesty, I could never abandon my wife and my family for my own self's dream. That'd be too selfish now, wouldn't it.

Well, it's just my opinion though. People have different principles.

8/10.

I guess this was the fucking best proposal I have ever seen lol.

It was an overall ok ending. I like that Hachi still went on his trip rather than turning 180° and staying on earth with Tanabe. That would have shattered all his dreams and his whole character thgat we've seen for 26 episodes. I guess most other Animes would have done just that so this one is special in a way.

In the end its a 7/10 because it could have been so much more and had so many faults.

Perfect ending for a perfect show, Need I say more?

Planetes has been by far the best anime for me. It had Drama, little bits of Romance, Slice of life and most of all it was inspiring and very teachable. The way Hachi maki proposed tanabe was simply phenomenal.

I tell everyone to watch it no matter what!

BTW, I have a question. Was Tanabe pregnant or something?

Oh yeah. You could tell because they were focusing on her stomach suggesting "something" was up. And in the last scene it was shown that Hachimaki's mother was drying a baby clothe.

The obvious answer is yes. But I feel bad for Tanade. She will have to raise a child without a husband for seven years. But it looks like she accepted it without any doubts.

Ohh Yeah, I re-watched the last episode because of it's awesomeness and saw that in the last scene, Hachi's mom was shaking a baby cloth in order to dry it. Yep, You're right Kira.

It's Tanabe.
Yep, I would've liked the Jupiter mission to be stalled, but that was not part of the plan. That would ruin the story. All in All, the proposal was awesome, probably the best one I've ever seen.
I wish this story could continue. I want another season. Not that I'm expecting anything, but still.

DAng it, I knew a happy ending would come out of it all.
I gotta hand it to Tanabe though, willing to wait 7 years... reminds me of pirates of a certain kind.
If she didn't wait, i think she would be one of my favorite characters despite preaching about the power of love.

I'm guessing Hachi's brother will help out in raising the child, teaching him what his father did for a living until they return back home.

I could say this anime was inspirational in a way(it's the first time I've seen a show like this one). Put your dreams to benefit the human race. I guess it's a bright, bright future from that mission onwards!!

^True Indeed. Hachi's Brother will take care of Tanabe's child, not to mention there's Hachi's mom too.

Only "Inspirational" doesn't manage to express the anime, It's more to that. There's a lot more to this anime than inspiration, there's love, sacrifice, rouse, and many more things. This is one anime that can be truly called EPIC!

Great ending,
somehow i hoped they will not be separated for that long but it was still great ending showing how everyone with some role during story ended up.

Now There could be some special episodes showing their reunion after 7 years ofc with their child too , and his bro's rocket engine. Guess that would make story even more warm at the end :)

Phew! What a ride! It was nice to see all the little threads tied off nicely!

Hakim swayed by the innocence of a child, Hachi Claire and Chin chatting together, The old debris section, Edels promotion, Dolf kicking some corporate arse, and Tanabe going for family life with Hachi and moving in with his family. Traditional 'and they live happily ever after' end. Ahhhhh.

Right, now I need to get my Helium-3 on!

I'll give this a 7, had some powerful episodes and posed interesting questions, but overall i didn't like the sappy mood (Not that i don't like emotional anime, but sometimes it was just a little too dramatic) and the boring fillers; and the plot was a little over the place, no real sense of connection; average series i'd say

damn I'm suprised the majority of viewers enjoyed this ending
I didn't particularly enjoyed it, i prefer hoshino staying with tanabe instead of being apart for 7 years
i felt sorry for Tanabe, most of the people had a happy ending even Tanabe friend was getting married in a wedding dress
For Tanabe there was no wedding or anything, in my eyes i saw Hoshino getting her pregnant and leaves her, goes to Jupiter with his father leaving Tanabe with the child. Maybe the child will grow up and hate his father for that?
So is he gonna be like his father? Just gonna visit his family once a year since his gonna be more experienced after Jupiter?
But thats just my opinion, i did however liked seeing the debris section getting new members :)
7/10 for me

I was pretty disappointed with the second half of the anime.

-you get Hachi being an extreme douche bag
-terrorist plot that caused a ton of drama for a few seconds then magically ends
-Hakin reappearing after messing with something on the Moon then disappearing again(I'm hoping Nora is ok...)
-Tanabe is gonna turn into Hachi's mother's archetype

The whole leaving thing left a really bad taste in my mouth. Maybe its because I really liked Tanabe's character and the situation she is now in is pretty shitty. Besides aside from one "sorta" date there was really not a whole lot of romantic interaction between them anyways.

Really enjoyed the first half and some of the earlier bits of the second half so it might be able to squeeze an 8 from me, maybe...

Loved this anime. It is the most realistically portrayed space anime I've seen. I was expecting to be disappointed by the ending, but everything went better than expected in my eyes. I am satisfied with how it ended. I'm sure that the next 7 years might be tough on Tanabe and Hachi, but I'm sure that given their personalities, they truly love one another and they will have a bright future ahead of them as a family.

Top 5 show indeed. 10/10

Meh ending. I was cruising about a 9/10 for most of the series, and then the ending just... was so disappointing. They tried to give everyone a good ending after showing you a lot of stark reality before it and it just doesn't gel and isn't authentic. Tanabe gets her man, Hachi gets the girl and his dream, neither have to sacrifice anything of themselves in the end, the terrorists live and are reformed... its too much. In life, in crazy situations such as these, most people get the bad ending and for -no one- to get one at all is a lame cop-out, writing-wise. A silly end to an otherwise good series.

I just finished this series and I have to agree with the guy above me. It just seems like a complete cop-out ending to an otherwise very nice series.

It goes all this way to try to show you that life isn't all that grand, and yet everyone has their plot armor equipped and goes off like nothing happened. The series seems simply afraid. Afraid to kill off any of their characters. Afraid to have them make more difficult decisions and face the consuquences.

I'm not against "they lived happily ever after" endings, but there is a time and a place for those types of endings, and I think Planetes could have been so much more than it is. The good ending here seems too artificial.

Well, this series was great.

He finally had the balls to propose in space. What a boss. The soundtrack of the series is supreme imo. There were a few episodes that caught me off track but some of the characters and scenes were quite interesting.

I expected more action from space although there were definitely some involving those bow-like high tech weapons and a few explosions going around.

Overall, a great series with a great story. 8/10.

Just finished this up, and I think there might be two kids. I mean we seen the baby sleeper on the line, more like a larger one, but it also seems she had a slight buldge, and with the way his brother was acting giving her a seat and such to me confiirms that. If I'm correct and there is one at 9 months or so, with another at 4 months or so in the womb, hopefully both won't be spacemen. lol

That or shes pregnant with the first one and they are washing unused baby clothes for beats me why.

Great ending! Although, dat scene with Hakim... I thought he was going to shoot her, and I'm surprised he didn't after he learned she was Lunarian, isn't that everything he was fighting against? Crazy terrorists...

Anyway, regarding the voyage to Jupiter, I did a few calculations for my own satisfaction and it seems that the Von Braun is one hell of a ship. In order for them to make a round trip in 7 years, not accounting for time taken to accelerate, or any time spent orbiting Jupiter;
The VB would have to travel at least 20,506 Kp/h. (Assuming that Jupiter is at it closest to earth at the time.)
Incidentally, at that distance it would take light-speed messages a bit over half an hour to make a one way trip.

Oops, did Kami-sama just kill another neko girl? My bad.

I'm surprised everyone hates the terrorist plot of the story. That was part of the allure of this series to me - it makes a great analogue to the terrorism of the present and the strife that's rampant in 3rd world countries today, in the real world. I thought it was interesting that even though humanity had gone so far into space and advanced so much technologically, that the same exact problems that plague us now (like the inequality gap) followed us just as far.

So it makes sense that there would be a group of terrorists fighting against that, and how we label them "terrorists" just like how we label some (emphasis on some) in the real world as terrorists, whereas in their world, they're just fighting for what they believe is right (such as taking land back, or fighting against a nation vastly more powerful than their own). The ending of it was kind of flat (quick 2 second negotiation defused everything) but overall I didn't see it as gimmicky but a pretty nice parallel drawn between the show's setting and reality.

Kinda agree with what Shane is saying here.

Watching the anime, you could tell that it was dissected into 2 portions, the first 12 (13?) contained a lot of comedy, romance, and character background, while the later half was a lot more serious plot related. In real fact, i believe the first half was dedicated to showing the viewers the unfairness between third world and first world countries face in terms of space ventures. Right off the bat (episode 1) it showed how INTO invaded third world countries. It allowed us to sympathise with the terrorist, to tell us that nothing is black or white. (not racist here)

The beauty of the anime is that we know such problems exist today and yet media, heavily biased towards the affluent, does not show us the truth. Interesting that more than 50 years down the road, when technology has developed so far as to send manned rockets to Jupiter that such problems continue to exist.

It seems most people enjoyed the good(questionable) ending to this series but I felt that this anime brought out the ugly truth to humans and society and did a good job in that aspect. Revealing Hakim's betrayal to Gigalt on his deathbed, Claire's sad reason for defection, Ninja boy stealing his dead comrades things to make a living etc. Were the space defense front heroes for demanding fairer terms? Did their terms improve inequality and disparity in the world? Were they really thinking for their people when they abandoned others? Is Space exploration more important than poverty here on earth? These are the questions invoked in our (mine at least) minds after ep. 26. Not so much the baby and Jupiter.

IMHO the terrorist plot was fine. I was more interested in the comparison between the 2 distinct ways of living, alone as compared to being interconnected. Blended in well with all the ugly sides they showed. Actually now that i think about it, living alone is portrayed as an "ugly side" itself.

ohwells TBH, I probably would have enjoyed it if it had a bad end as well. Not that i dun like good endings, but they didn't really resolve the issues I mentioned above. Maybe because there are no resolutions... Looks like I rambled too much xP

"In space no one can hear you clean" (Space Quest)
This fabulous space tale is like Roger Wilco meets Genshikin and City Hunter beyond earth

I liked every bit of it and it doesn't seem dated at all, since it's almost 10 years old
The characters are appealing as well and develop on a nice pace as it goes

A mature show with topics that can still be used today and contains most subjects like: Comedy, Romance, Drama, Minority, Terrorism (9/11) and even bits of Action

Does the Journey to Jupiter take 3,5 years actually and the back trip 3,5 years again?

God, I am soooooo pissed! That was a horrible ending! The f*cker married her, impregnated her, and then left her (and his unborn child) behind! And now she gets to play the role of the "harbor" that waits for the "ship" to return home.

I'm obviously too much of a feminist to appreciate this. I mean, they were both happy in the end, so I should be happy for them right? No, no, I'm not. 'Cause once again it's a story about man's adventure, about men having dreams and being explorers and reaching new frontiers, and the women/wives they leave behind who are "okay" with it and play the role of whatever the man wants of them. Screw that crap. Hachi was willing to kill (would have succeeded in killing but failed due to luck) while Tanabe couldn't compromise her ideals in the end (showing she's the better person all around), Hachi comes to realizations and becomes the calmest man in the world, Hachi doesn't need to apologize, Hachi is easily forgiven, and Hachi still gets what he wants and Tanabe is relegated to the loyal wife. GRAGH!.

I totally agree. Hachi wants to follow his dreams, fine, but did he have to propose? It's so fucking selfish. Tanabe has dreams too, she said she wants to be a debris hauler again. Couldn't they have gone their separate ways for 7 years, do their own thing and then meet again and THEN decide if they want to get married etc? Getting married now, Tanabe getting pregnant and waiting for Hachi while raising their kid alone(ok, Hachi's mother and brother will help her) for seven years... i can't even. It's a great series but the ending kinda ruined it for me :/ It really is once again a man's adventure and the woman is almost a complete person. And this has nothing to do with a man being the protagonist.

Ughh, I hate this.

Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Great characters, great plot, great journey. I'll be forever amazed by how well-constructed the Planetes world is and how close to what could be the future. 8/10
