and so it's over

i have the feeling the series peaked really hard by the second third, starting with Miya and Fukiko's arc and finishing with sorority revolution. Rei's death felt silly when it happened, but nonetheless the way they carried the aftermath was superb (episode 35 is one of my favorites from the series, easily)

unfortunately the whole deal with kaoru-no-kimi and oniisama felt a bit mellow, so these last episodes felt more like an epilogue than anything else.

like every other shojo from that time that flerted with homossexuality, it ends up painting it as a sort of youth indiscretion and it's heavily implied that once they get to know men, they'll left it behind. but that's just how Class S is apparently. (the one work that still play by these rules but manages to go further is Kaze to Ki no Uta, from what i've seen)

anyway... very strong series all around. fine melodrama that should, by all means, feel completely silly, but somehow thanks to Dezaki's sharp direction it just works incredibly well (for the most part - but when it doesn't it's just hillarious). above RoV for me. when you think about it, both RoV and Oniisama have 39 episodes, but RoV is a 10 volume manga, while the later has just 3. he took the source, twisted and expanded all upon it; i can't think of any other case where the adaptation is so ridiculously superior

also i'll do a character chart cause why not

Nanako grew a lot, even if this a "happy ending" now she knows how society and adults tend to work, what's behind the curtain but knowing she's not always going to learn every answer behind it, the death of her first love will change the way she approach love from now on, I wasn't expecting anything explicitly gay from a 90's anime adaptation of manga from the 70's but the depiction Nanako's love for Rei and then her mourning and the final acceptance of her departure were surprising for me and then is her unaware parents commenting about how she would eventually fall in love one day with a guy for the first time contrasting with how her Mom have never told her about who Nanako's father is and what kind of relatinship she had with him made it seem like Nanako's love for Rei was valid, meanwhile what she says at the end seems ambiguous enough to made it sound like she has fallen for guy, it could also be a girl.

This was a magnificent melodrama that stumbled a bit at the end with the whole Kaoru x Henmi thing but was saved by having such terrific main character until the very end.

After Rei died, it was sad but things went on a turn I don't necessarily approve of. Nevertheless it was lowkey satisfying

Wasn't as spectacular as I thought it would be, but the show was pretty good. 8.5/10

IIRC, she says "ano kata" which is pretty much "that person," so I assume gender is supposed to be unknown (but I'm not fluent so I'm not sure of any nuances). The subs probably used "he" for convenience's sake.

Personally, I never felt that Nanako was homosexual or truly had romantic feelings for Rei. Even though she says "I love you," it felt more like a simple infatuation instead.

What a journey... one of the rawest animes I've seen. Very realistic. Not many shows focus more on the emotional side nowadays like Oniisama e. You could relate to many of the characters on here with their issues, Ikeda is great at using pathos in her works. Satisfactory ending. Definitely saw many resemblances of Versailles no bara in it.

Dezaki Osamu strikes again with his brilliant storyboards, such a great animation style. Would definitely watch more of his works.

Well it's just shoujo anime in the end and i being trolled by another yuri tag again, it's not that bad i think but the story took a very long long way and to many dramas, well it's 90s anime though so it's the basic maybe

The ending was horrible. Kaoru's character was decimated and Rei's death was pointless. How the hell did it take Kaoru, an active princely person and turn her into some subdued baby machine in a boring hetero relationship. Bordline homophobic, left such a bad taste in my mouth after 37 amazing episodes!!!!
@bbqpauk It's giving...

This ending was trash and very homophobic, and misogynistic. Why is Kaoru not allowed to be an athletic tomboy anymore? She's a subdued housewife with a baby. Nanako had real love for Rei. Why did her parents say that real love can only be between a man and a woman? Very insulting for queer people.

Also, I'm going to say it. The show lost its flavor when they started making the men more prominent, and forced these bland het ships on us.

I'm pleased with the conclusion. Kaoru in a wedding dress and Nanako 2 years later looked nice. Too bad Mariko x Takashi wasn't confirmed, tho.

On a more serious note, the last stretch of episodes were tainted by one minor issue. Reis death had some sort of foreshadowing, yet the execution left a bad taste. The accidental nature made it seem like the sole purpose of including it was to affect the other characters and more misery porn xD How she died could be perceived as callback to her delirious state from episode 12

I swear she will eventually succeed if this keeps going on

But I dunno, such a portrayal didn't do her justice. I finished the manga by now as well, how it went there felt at least more in character.

The anime was nonetheless fantastic as a coming of age story(especially Nanako's and Mariko's progression was a highlight; the latter tied with Kaoru as favorite character) It fleshed out characters more, added a few scenes and the gorgeous style really elevated the drama to the next level. Dezaki and Sugino are a W duo. Could've been a 10 in terms of aesthetic. Unfortunately, aforementioned aspects held it back. I think I'll go with a 8,5-9/10.
@FMmatron

Yes... This is the best ending of all. A bland misogynistic het relationship, and the implication that real love doesn't exist amongst queer people... The best ending of all time...

bruh that engrish though lol
i will say that the VERY ending with Nanako expressing how she has a boyfriend is a real punch in the guy knowing that this show was VERY GAY from the start. it invalidates Rei's presence and their relationship to a certain degree, but I guess this was a change that had to be made because of the time that the show came out (90s)
Other than that, i LOVED this show so much. It touched so many heavy topics and each character had such good development. I'm not leaving the show unsatisfied wondering what happened next.. overall very lovely, and definitely a new favorite. 9/10!
@mich1ru I mean... Revolutionary Girl Utena and Sailor Moon aired in the 90s, and they had queer romance...

Wow. What a ride. I enjoyed myself, but I feel a little like Mariko about all of this. Like yeah, good for you... but the implication that a queer romance just didn't even seem to be an actual option kinda stings. Yet at the same time, I understand we're going by not only the 70's but also the 90's. Unfortunately, there was this idea in Japan for a while that girls in love during their high school days would just grow out of it... that it was never serious. This kinda has that type of thinking written all over it. Do I feel like Nanako and Rei's relationship was healthy? Probably not, but it existed and it very much shaped Nanako into who she is today. I think it's just the way every single non-het relationship just did not turn out well or was swept aside that gets me. Yet... I get it. But dang, the whole "gay doomed to fail/doomed to tragedy" thing weighs on me. At the same time, when this came out perhaps that idea wasn't as common. So I have mixed feelings.

Still, I enjoyed myself. I really enjoyed seeing the characters develop and really it's been a while since I've been so engaged in the lives of characters. This is oddly missing from a lot of stories, but a character would do something or act a certain way, but the part that kept you hooked was the "why". However, it wasn't enough to have us figure out the "why", there were a lot more nuanced answers to that "why" most of the time. It's just something I think is often missing. I appreciated a lot of these characters for that. Actually, as i watch some anime now, I can't even tell you why certain characters are doing what they do. They have flimsy motivations and so I just don't get as attached. I think right now, people have been complaining that their kids are more attached to the villain characters in media these days. Yeah, it's because the villains, even if we don't agree with them, have an interesting "why". Why are you doing this? "I want to be king". Okay, but why do you want to be king? "Because, as much as I don't want to admit this, I crave power and the idea of having people's lives in the palm of my hands makes me feel worth something when all my life I've felt worthless... and let me show you why." Like, it can be compelling as opposed to the MC's motivations that are usually just, "I gotta save everyone... because it's important and the right thing to do". Yawn.
So here, we had so much juicy "why". It might have been over-dramatic or maybe even silly at times, but there weren't many times I ever felt like a character's motivations were weak no matter how silly the reason. That helped make for a compelling story for me. I'm really impressed with that. We hit a lot of tears and maybe even overreactions, but it was all mostly there for a reason. I can't help but like this.

I never thought I'd see Kaoru in a dress, but there she was, and she was beautiful. It's a shame that Miya hasn't found anyone in her life, but she's only young, so who knows.

After the time skip, it appears that Kaoru had a baby. That was quick, but she doesn't know how much time she has left, so she probably hurried it, just to make sure. Also, Nanako has met someone? Interesting, but I guess we'll never know who they are.

This anime was really good, and the fashion kept me thinking that I wish I had some of those dresses and skirts that the girls wore. Actually, I have a few that are similar, but nowhere near enough. Too many dresses here in North America are sleeveless, which are not my cup of tea.

The only gripe that I could have regarding this anime, is the fact that the GL was treated like something that young girls experience, then move on from, or grow out of, which forces heteronormativity, which was a bad message to send. @Swiggy above me hit the nail on the head regarding that.
