Fall 2025 is finally here for me, I know a handful of shows have begun already but they weren’t among my picks lol. I missed the yuri anime last season but I did happen to catch the yaoi horror anime, and like some others have said, it’s a bit like the flipped version of that, but of course it’s very different too, it’s mainly just the doomed ship and supernatural element that ties them together, and I liked it quite a bit from the first episode.

You can tell right off the bat that Hinako and Shiori’s relationship is gonna be very interesting to watch, the way they met and the conditions of their relationship being “I’m letting you marinate so I’ll protect you for a while before I’m ready to eat you” is such a wild start already, but there’s also Hinako clearly being in a state of depression, and I think Shiori could potentially bring some light into her life despite her intentions of eating her, so I’m wondering if this story will end with Hinako being eaten, or being “eaten” if you know what I mean lol, I’m sure that’s an original joke that no one has said yet. I also really liked the horror bits, the show isn’t tagged with horror so it was a pleasant surprise, I hope we get some more of that as more things try to eat Hinako. And lastly, I wanted to mention that every time Hinako said Shiori smelled like the ocean, I kept thinking that she must smell salty lol, I wonder if anyone else smells that like Hinako does.

And that is a very nice OP and ED, very cool visuals on the OP but the ED looks more typical for a yuri romance, I liked the song a lot for it tho.

From what I gathered after watching this is that Hinako lost her family due to some reason which I hope will be explained at some point and therefore is living alone and has a friend named Miko that appears to be flaky but seems to mean well. Also, Shiori is a mermaid that wants to "eat" Hinako later on and Hinako, being in a depressed state, is welcoming that.

I'm going into this blind and ngl this felt a bit slow for me, plus with Hinako daydreaming and drifting off a few times throughout almost made me fall asleep too. Nonetheless, I'm curious to see how this plays out.

Oh this looks really really good

Surprised not many people are talking about the absolutely gorgeous score that scene of her being held by Shiori? With the soft piano notes?!? HELLO AM I THE ONLY THAT CAN HEAR?!?!

They did such a good job with the atmosphere and the progression stayed super faithful to the source with this first episode. It had moments where it captured some of the manga's beauty, but it also struggled replicating that in a few scenes. They made easy to animate scenes look really nice, but cut corners on the more difficult scenes to translate into animation. Which is why I'm worried about some of the upcoming events. However, it was a good start and I was happy to be able to watch a great source in visual format. If they can keep the tone and atmosphere at a strong level, this should be a solid adaptation. Even if they lose some of the source's beauty.

So... is Summer Gothic a recurrent thing in anime now? i love it. The contrast between the summery landscape and the very VERY dark themes touched upon is eerie. I'm intrigued.

Am I taking crazy pills? Why are several people saying the animation was good? It was objectively bad. In fact, it's barely animated at all. Did you not see the like 3 dozen panning stills, or how characters don't actually move if they aren't main characters or how any kind of action happens off screen so they don't have to animate it?

The direction and art style are on point, but those things are not animation. This is less animated than TBATE and that got memed to hell and back. When school got out they legit showed 5 panning stills IN A ROW! It was like 25 seconds with a total of 5 frames of animation and that wasn't an isolated incident.

Also a lot of the source material reviews say this barely a yuri. IMO cannibalism is not yuri. I'm gonna need more than subtext and tension.

Very cliche view of depression. All the Hallmark cliches of a sad girl, Yuri, and violence. A story about trying to move on and finding love. Eh I wish the writing or premise could be better. They really only have one note in showing what depression is. I still think Welcome to the NHK was the only show that really captured depression the atomization of oneself, the manic highs and lows and trying to find purpose better than this. This shit is just so on the nose and trying too hard to be profound. Maybe it will get better. I almost wanted to die when I saw the "maybe she will let me die" at the end. I guess this shit really appeals to young adults and strikes as profound

A decent first episode. I take it's all an allegory for depression?
@notthatjesus It was a fantastic first episode! I love the manga too, we're in for stormy seas, eh?
No, sadly, it's not an allegory.

The water effects are fantastic, the soundtrack is amazing, the VAs are perfect!

It starts slowly, but when things "come to a boil" it really "hits the fan". Several times! In unexpected ways too!

Look forward to some SS-tier character development on top of all that.

@ShiroAlex Yep. Japanese Mermaids never met Walt Disney or those Western movies never would have been made. Then again, most old mermaid tales are like Grim's Fairy Tales, a lot darker than what we in the West have been fed in the last 5 or 6 decades.

@Sheol01 Yep, that's why I prefer the original versions of fairy tales like Grim's Fairy Tales; even as a child, I found the softened versions a bit dull and too saccharine.

Hinako is a tragic figure, she has lost her family and ever since she has just been coasting along waiting for her own inevitable end. Miko is a good friend, she is trying to keep Hinako interested in life, but it seems like a losing battle.
Looks like this is going to be some doomed yuri and I am here for it. Seems like it will be a slow burn, but I am intrigued.

The music really stood out in this episode, and the premise reminded me of the manga August 9 I Will Be Eaten by You. Color me intrigued.
@heychrisj Yes! I was noticing how good the soundtrack was throughout, too. Combined with the voice acting for Hinako, we're really going for mood.

I'm just a little worried that some of the visuals are a bit on the cheap side, and outside of the main character designs, it does have a bit of a generic look. But hopefully, the positives can continue to outweigh these worries.

@Briekimchi yeah it is clearly on the cheap side with lots of stills. All the budget went into the two main characters and the one supporting character. Still, the story is interesting so I am rating it 7/10.

@ShiroAlex It's another reason why I despise Disney these days ( Aside from that company butchering Star Wars which is utterly unforgivable but a separate issue), the utter castration of stories that were meant to be warnings. It's funny, but authors like Jim Butcher of the Dresden Files understand the OG Fey and other classic creatures. I believe mermaids even in the West are best related to the Sirens, which lured ships to their destruction in order to eat the shipwreck victims. ( Hah the first Wreckers! That nasty form of piracy humans later took up.).

Interesting font choice by CrunchyRoll for the subtitles. Makes me feel like it's 20 years ago and I'm reading GameFAQs.

Anyway, I'd been looking forward to this and I feel like it's going to be good. Not that into the character designs, but I don't think it'll bother me.

I've seen some people saying the pacing was slow for this first episode but I thought it was excellent, it really helped sell the idea that time has essentially stopped for Hinako. This anime for me is the stand-out of the season, nothing else aside from Umamusume really competes for my attention. I hope the quality remains steady throughout the production.

Hinako's depression from losing her entire family is palpable. It's easy to see why she's okay with losing her life.

Now you add the fact that she's apparently a prime delicacy to monsters, and I can't say that it's entirely a bad thing for her to have someone like Shiori guarding her.

It's not the healthiest arrangement, or even the safest since Shiori wants to eat her too, but it's definitely better than nothing.

What a fascinating start. I love the slow pacing and eerie horrific tone.
Its the classic toxic yuri pairing of depressed girl who wants to die x girl who wants to kill her. I wonder how the romantic tension immediately built up between Shiori and Hinako will develop. Romance seems so at odds with the concept of killing your partner and yet, in a twisted way, the romance feels more passionate and deep when such a twisted fucked up ultimate yearning gets fulfilled. I'm very interested in how the metaphor of being eaten will develop as the characters grow and change and how Miko plays into all of this.
Also I love all of the deep sea creatures in the metaphorical underwater dissociative moments! Oarfish are so fucking cool -v-. I wonder if the strange alien looking creatures of the deep represent Hinako feeling like an outsider who does not belong in her environment? Some very interesting metaphorical storytelling here.

Great introductory episode! I'm hooked and look forward to more! ;D
Cute, fat, chubby, gay, queer, glasses wearing, nerdy, introverted, weird, kinda fucked up in a cute anime girl way, squishy, soft, fucking gay, silly anime girls my beloved

TSHD but Yuri? Count me in!
Decent production quality overall, the vibes were on point, the portrayal of depression and grief hit so hard, but what really stood out for me is the ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL MUSIC, it made me so emotional even though I didn't fully understand what's going on yet, I'm completely immersed!

Yuri fans really 'eating' good this year. A huge tone shift from Watanare to Watatabe, what if it's Yuri but we make it a Doom Yuri.

The atmosphere, the music, the voice acting was all so amazing, you can really feel what Hinako's going through, though idk but the animation is making me worried it might turn to a SasaKoi. Hopefully not.

Isn't it ironic that the monster that wants to eat a girl who want to die is a mermaid (ningyo), a well known yokai that grants immortality if you eat its flesh.
Instead of straight up eating a delicious food, why not savor its taste little by little. -Shiori probably

This is a yuri I haven't experienced both reading and watching. Even though I'm not super into super natural stuff, if it's yuri, I'll eat it. Can't hurt to have more yuri am I right?

Did anyone make the "not sexually" joke yet?

Edit: the character design looks similar to Bloom into You. Might just be me though.

“She might let me die.”
Uh... you do know you don’t actually need her permission for that, right? If you really wanted to die, you could just... well, you know. And yeah, I get that when you’re depressed it’s incredibly hard to look beyond yourself. But I still hope one day you’ll be able to look up and see that there’s someone who truly cares about you, someone who’d be devastated if you just gave up on living. And okay, I’m just going to assume by “want to eat her” she means ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Still, it’s hard to find reasons to live when you’ve lost your entire family so young and are left alone in this cruel world. I just hope her mindset changes as the story goes on. Honestly, I’m expecting a 180 plot twist at the end, I’ve got a bad feeling this might either dive into heavy drama or end with the monster abandoning her. Either way, if it wasn’t obvious already, yeah... this one definitely has yuri vibes. Starts off grim, with main girl here losing both parents and openly longing for death.

Seems like this might be a more depressing, emotionally heavy story and honestly I’m here for it. I’m really curious to see where it goes.
@IzanaSolos this doesn't have yuri vibes, this IS a yuri series 😐
