I'm convinced this is just a badly edited version of the original episode(s).
How can this happen?! It's like they combined two episodes last minute!
They managed to shorten the first one by cutting out the context that makes the rest of the scenes... make sense.
But then realised: "Oh, the episode is releasing in a few hours yet we have only edited about half of it nor have we added music."
So they proceeded to absolutely murder the second half by keeping only the most crucial story beats, throw out the important intermediate parts that made the story coherent and if the animation was not completed for some cut, they used the good old secret technique of powerpoint.
Finally, just before sending it, they added the music they always use, in a loop, during the whole episode.
That is my personal head-cannon, but I would like to know what actually happened!
Btw, this is why no matter how much I dislike BUG FILMS for not planning out Zom 100 well enough before release, I respect them for deciding to delay their work's release over and over instead of delivering whatever was ready at the time; unlike [insert obvious example here].

I am so disappointed in how they directed the school festival arc, so much so that it doesn’t even feel like one, and although I can recognize the effort to shorten it and make important conversations for the characters still seem important, it was all just so rushed that it lost whatever impact the whole event had in the manga. I was super excited about this being animated, but I guess this is what comes with the production being what it is and just doing the 12 episodes.

Not to mention how fast it was as an episode.. in a very small span of time ..all this happen?
Question.. is it also like this in the manga?

@Umaru14

Unfortunately no, this arc in the manga has much better pacing. I have the same problem with this adaptation as I do with the Haikyuu movies: I'm happy with the overall production value but I wish all of the chapters could have been adapted fully. In my opinion, Haikyuu and Honey Lemon Soda both don't really have filler and every scene feels meaningful in some way so it does hurt the story when the adaptation is cutting those character moments.

Last episode skipped chapter 10 (I really wish they hadn't cut this subplot) and this episode ended up adapting chapters 11-14. I feel like Uka gains so much confidence and agency in these stretch of chapters and one episode wasn't enough to capture her growth. The anime only alludes to this but we actually get to see her clash with her classmates before she heads off on her bike alone so the scene where they come running to help her is a lot more satisfying. The scene where she tells Kai she would be fine without him is supposed to be a huge breakthrough in her character development (and that's why Kai feels so comfortable saying he'll always be around to watch over her since he realized she's able to stand on her own with or without him), but that moment seems to have lacked the same impact in the anime since a lot of the buildup is missing. I also feel like certain characters come off differently in the manga vs the anime? In the manga, once her classmates find out about Uka advocating for their class, they take off running immediately. I also thought that the girls that confronted her about Kai were supposed to be more curious about their relationship rather than antagonistic (this is just my interpretation though).

I like the anime enough to keep watching but I would definitely recommend the manga for pure story.

(Also, at the end of the episode, Miura means that he takes back saying he doesn't see her in a romantic light.)

I was looking forward to watching this episode but I was disappointed.
It seems like they ran out of budget. They tried their best not to animate as much as possible and kept showing anything beside the characters.
Like for a example the same plane passing 4 times.
I just hope they have enough budget for the next episodes...

Weirdly enough, I liked this episode more than all the previous ones, despite the PowerPoint level of animation. At least the direction had to make some bold choices to make up for it and I think they worked overall.

I wish they could do the same with some actual animation in place. But the fact that they are running out of budget mid-season doesn't give me much hope (unless they decided to save that budget for the season finale).

The format of this episode was so weird. It started randomly in the middle of the plot, then kept skipping from present to flashbacks too much.

Also, I love a good tsundere character but Kai is just straight up a dick most of the time, not to mention it feels like he’s just infantilizating Uka. Why does she need a “caretaker”??? Better yet, why make that comment to the WHOLE SCHOOL?? And of course it wouldn’t be an episode of Honey Lemon Soda without Uka crying, this time on stage in front of everyone

After watching it I thought "what an amazing episode, so raw and creative, it really captures the manic slightly chaotic atmosphere of a public event like a school festival". Then I read the other comments and it sounds like it was just rushed and cobbled together. All I can say, it worked for me.

This was a slideshow with incoherent voice over and the same piano backing track for the whole duration.

Also, it was so rushed, while repeating the same scenes over and over...

Has the budget run out after 5 eps?
This was an embarrassing episode; it felt as if the studio is shutting down.

Hahaha! This scene was the exact moment the animators said: "Fuck this! Let's put together a slideshow with our drafts and a few funky backgrounds, done. Who's joining me for drinks later?"

Does Miura like her at all? Maybe I caught it wrong? He denied wanting to date her to his friend. I don’t like him much at all.
This episode also felt rushed and choppy with scenes. I couldn’t follow it much at all

I'm wondering the same thing! The animation has dropped in quality. And then what is Miura saying!? He doesn't like her but wants to be around her to protect her? What is he a bodyguard?
@Umaru14 it is confusing. I get mixed messages from him. He didn’t talk to her too nicely this episode too. I feel like it’s more like a duty, than actually fancying her. I will keep watching I guess, it’s only 6 more episodes to go.

@HikarieChan agreeeeed so many shortcuts in this episode and sooo rushed!! the impact of the final moment didn't hit as hard for me because of it. for the comedic bits, some of the shortcuts totally worked but for the emotional bits it was a big let down. hopefully the quality doesn't stay like this.

I love the manga and I'm enjoying the anime.

This episode though...the animation and directing seemed a bit sloppy somehow? Reminds me a bit of the presentation-like animation style of second season of Blue Lock. There were many panel-by-panel scenes, repetitive, almost copy/paste scenes, and so many random airplanes.

Reading this thread every week legit gives me a constant headache. Story aside, which I personally think is one of the best this season, there is so much more to animation than just movement, and calling it bad just shows how many collective braincells everybody here has.

This episode was easily a standout thanks to the direction and SB of Kiyotaka Oohata's. From beautiful shots like these,

To probably what everyone noticed, the part where Ayumi's head gets big and she talks scolding the dude, lols. And as per usual as well, the OST is actually godlike. The good fun content and nature also helped this episode.

I hate the anti-shoujo bias here, and it's bigger than it's ever been with this show for whatever reason.

Didn't this episode feel kinda all over the place and the animation was also sloppy.
@Niwaka_Samurai I normally don´t notice this kind of things but I really felt uncomfortable watching this episode and I love this anime.
I love the story, Uka is finally becoming strong and want the others to depend on her.
She is having more friends.
But why so many weird angles? Like characters speaking but they don´t show their faces, or they show their face with the voice and the mouth not moving.
And also they repeated the same scenes.
I know JC Staff is working in many animes but they shouldn´t release something if is not properly finished.
This felt like sequence of images sometimes instead of anime...
it makes me sad because I´m loving the story.

@Edentifrice Yes, I hate to agree but is true, the animation was aweful in this one and is sad.

@Umaru14 Maybe they had most of their workers drawing other animes instead of this one lol.

@Fenyy I´ve seen other festival episodes that were animated better. And I love Honey Lemon Soda, so is sad to say this.

9rushed episode, but I had a bit of an epiphany...this series, at least Ishimori and Miura feel a bit like Clannad, with Ishimori being the crybaby that is scared of pushing forward (nagisa) and the delinquent who seemingly would prefer not to have anything to do with the world (Tomoya). It's a shame though, pacing issues aside, the dynamic is just so much worse here. It took way too much pushing for Ishimori to put herself in a position to be around others, and even now, she's still largely not making decisions for herself. Contrast this with Nagisa who had goals and things she wanted to do and at least voiced those. Here, any desires we gather are all within her head (could simply be because she's the main character but it's somewhat bothering me given how repetitive it's been).

On the other hand, we have absolutely no indication of what Miura's motivation is for involving himself with Ishimori, nor do we see him taking responsibility for anything or fighting battles worth fighting. It just feels a little abusive.

We'll see where things end up.

wtf was this typa of direction? Why tf do modern animes keep hiring weird-ass directors in mid anime episodes? Like, what was that supposed to be?? This type of direction should be used in a few scenes, but they decided to use it all over the episode. It feels so weird compared to the peak episodes before. It feels like you're reading a book with a fast rushed pace, not watching an emotional anime with consistent scenes. That was so horrible, and I hope the next episodes aren't that trashy.

@Fenyy I know what you mean and you are right, but I think this episode specially was badly directed, the storyline was really good but instead of focusing on Uka´s expressions, they decided to go for comedy and with weird angles were we couldn´t see them talking, and we hear their voices only.
Is just weird.
Maybe this episode had a different director, it felt rushed as well. I thought the festival would take more than one episode.

This anime is turning to be mediocre sadly, i thought i would like this anime more because of the way it covers bullying and redemption and have a happy ending but so far the bullying has been super unrealistic. This episode was kinda stupid, i mean alot of anime and some anime that i enjoyed had a maid cafe episode but like cmon it did not suit this anime, And Kai giving so many mixed messages he's just such a badly written character. And him calling out Ishimori he just reminds me of one of those Eboys on Roblox. I think i am the wrong target audience tbh because this seems like more of a female fantasy as in "loser girl" gets picked up with big strong man popular jock guy and they fall in love. Honestly doesn't appeal to me. But i don't drop anime so we finishing it.
@Spast1c

I would disagree about calling a character badly written even as a non honey lemon soda fan given this is barely 13 chapters in a manga of 70+ chapters. He barely scratches the surface. Istg modern audiences are nightmares. They barely even let characters get a set up or develop before calling them bad.

@SakuraUchiha2313 No it is more so the fact that he just reminds me of like the stereotypical jock that girls someone flock to. I've watched mostly romance anime and this is the worst one I've seen (so far) Kai is just a annoying character always acting so cocky and full of himself. and like I said i feel this romance anime is more directed at females. @Lamp1009 Oh my god..you did not just compare Uka and Miura to Tomoya and Nagisa. Nagisa was a crybaby but she wasnt weak. She pushed harder than anyone else. Tomoya wasnt a deliquent either, he helped people more than anyone else and learned consequences the hard way. They empowered eachother by being together. Nagisa was also never dependant on Tomoya. Sure, he was very important to her, but in the end she walked her own way and was the one who constantly saved Tomoya.

I just think calling a character badly written so early into the series when he didnt even get a chance to be explored much is a bit too quick of a judgement. @SakuraUchiha2313 I did compare them, and you literally emulated the point I was trying to make...read it again. Uka and Miura are not filling those roles well at all. It's as if the story is trying to make Uka the crybaby type without empowering her to take initiative. Tomoya was most definitely a delinquent (as was made evident by the series dialogue), but, as you said, his ultimate goal became helping others, and his motivations were clear from the start.

My greater point is that I'm not liking the path HLS is trying to take here. The character tropes are clearly even less original than some are making it out to be (once again, see the parallels with Clannad), but they're just done worse and without purpose. Perhaps I'm missing some subtext myself but even then, the pacing is still off.

This episode was going good continuing Ishimori's character development then Kai steps in. Kai feels like he's just there because it's required. Nothing to him just speaking like he has been sent to protect the last saviour of the world (unless there's more but we're halfway through the series).
This episode would still have worked without Kai and the whole emotional scene which didn't leave any impact.

This episode felt so rushed and disjointed. Its like they cramped 2 episodes into one. The animation quality dropped a ton too it was like reading a manga but in a bad way lol. There was a point where Kai was talking but his mouth didn't move?? 5 things happened and ended in a minute. The scene of them in the backroom seemed very important with them running out holding hands then it just cuts to the next thing? I don't understand. I was completely caught off guard. Some of the bad animations parts where quite funny though. I really enjoyed the last episode so its sad too see this one treated with the least amount of care. I hope the next one is better, we shall see.

So my 3 observations:

  1. I have never seen this many gals/gyaru in a shoujo anime like this. That meeting on the rooftop was like a “Legion of Gals” conference. Very interesting.

  2. I think Kai looked-up and finally realized he caught feelings for Ishimori (which was of course inevitable). It will be interesting to see how long it takes Ishimori to recognize this and have enough confidence to seal the deal

  3. I really want Tomoya to play spoiler to Kai and go for Ishimori himself—if only to keep Kai from being over-confident that Ishimori will keep coming back. Serina pretty much served this purpose for Ishimori and is what started motivating Uka to be more confident and assertive over Kai. We need to see this on Kai’s end.
@KM_31 If you mean by GALS just fashionable and stylish chicks, then there are a lot of them in Japanese schools.

@Narizor Also pay attention to that all this titles was boy-focused.

Uka volunteering to be a committee member for the culture festival, and naturally, Miura joins in.

The elaborate planning from Uka herself, as much as people are entitled to their own rules, sure Miura has been always guiding her, but it's about time that she made rules for herself. And while standing out by asserting her dominance for her class's culture festival, it's clear that more of her classmates are going towards her and collaborating in the effort together, and even her having fun in school, which were all but reality in her past, is the reality she's facing now that she's depending on others to help her in her stead.

Uka's class maid café is so popular, that even Uka is called in to help, it's at least satisfaction on her end. That is until anything related to Miura, with the slightest of words, pinpoints Uka to being his universal caretaker, though his friends also caution him on how long can be hold this farce.

With love clearly overwhelming Uka and potentially fraying her relationship with Miura, the culture festival can be a place of fear (e.g. sexual harassment), but it's time to draw the line on where they stand.

A lot of still image parts and reused animations which felt so cheap. Not to mention that the same music over and over again. I really liked the first few episodes, but this one felt really bad. Why did this episode change so much?!

This episode felt like a fever dream. It was so fast paced and just felt like i watched 5 episodes in one. They kept reusing scenes too and kept doing still shots over voice overs. I just couldn't follow what was going on. Everything was just sporadic and it felt like a cheap Shaft series impersonation. Horrible episode overall.

Do the brakes on her bike not work or something?

Ahh, this was so cute!

I will say this episode was a bit rushed. But I loved it nonetheless. Uka is such a realistic character and its nice knowing Kai is there for her and will continually stand up for her. Sometimes a shy and painfully awkward girl needs someone like that to break out of her shell. I say that from personal experience.

I wasn't expecting Uka to cry on stage though, that's crazy.

I absolutely love the music in this anime. Its so good and beautifully sets up the mood.

Miura is incredibly bold, he literally says in the preview, *"Leave Ishimori to me!"* What's even weirder is that no one in the entire school seems to notice the sheer amount of love and possessiveness he just expressed! Meanwhile, Ishimori is still stuck in her inferiority complex... Come on, he just declared it in front of the whole school!

Also, why does Ishimori cry at every little thing? It's kind of odd.

And *Ashita no Joe* references are everywhere again! :]

Ugh, it happened again. Kai just pops up out of nowhere, drops a motivational line, and that’s all it takes for Uka to keep moving forward. Like seriously? At least Uka was finally starting to open up and get along with her class during the cultural fest prep—that was some actual progress.

But nope, all that decent development went straight down the drain the moment that Kai clip from Crazy Cool played. Then outta nowhere, random girls show up just to trash talk Uka, and she instantly reverts back to square one. It’s like the plot's on a loop, and yeah, it feels like the creator was just high vibin' with no plan in mind.

If anyone can point out a single redeeming quality in this mess, I’d love to hear it. 'Cause right now? It’s illogical, inconsistent, and honestly just exhausting to follow.
