Based on the cold open in episode 1, the links to the past, and various characters and subplots, it seems unlikely they can effectively end this in one standard-length episode. It can be done, but it's going to be sloppy, if that's what they're doing.
This has been a train wreck that I couldn't avert my eyes from from the very start, and I can't wait to see how this ends.
Am I the only one who thinks this show has been pretty ok?
although I agree with them probably not having a good ending due to how many loose ends it has.
in the world were the isekai with dog shit writing and actual nothing burger shows get a 7+ score on mal. and even the bottom of the barrels get a 6.
Is this really bad enough to be below 6 by mal standards?
I mean depending on how it ends my score can be anywhere from a 3 to a 6, but like, I have seen way more garbage stuff get praised. what is it about this show in particular that makes it so terrible.
in my eyes this isn't really worse than "Another" which got a 7.5 on mal.
I want to say it's been in the 4-6 range for most people I've seen commenting on the boards, so more on the average side, but keep in mind I am pretty nitpicky. We'll have to wait and see once the whole thing is in Japanese, because I've noticed a lot of people are turning their noses up for that reason.
How into horror are you? I've generally noticed anime fans aren't too familiar with horror unless they're very heavily into the genre in the form of books or movies, as there's just not much real anime horror (mostly you get action-packed body horror like Parasyte, rather than something where the characters are more vulnerable, like The Thing). It's really weird, but every genre is pretty well-represented with anime, but horror has always been kind of a weak one. I've read a lot of Lovecraft, which this is heavily influenced by, as well as people in his circle like Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard and loads of other authors that took a similar direction when it comes to horror, so this is already very familiar territory for me. Another and Higurashi are actually relatively unique by non-anime horror standards, whereas with C Danchi, I just see inverted Lovecraft wearing cat pants.
I don't think it compares very well to non-anime horror at least. But it has a low-budget, poor animation and art, goofy comedy and bad music, the little girl with cat pants and them trying to make this cute like Higurashi, and so many other aspects all clash with the horror and mystery for me. Also, the culture clash plot is very badly written and corny, and I personally despise these kind of plots. The only thing keeping me going is to see how they tie everything together.
I would be lying If I said I am super into horror, simply because jump scares are a big turn off for me, so I tend to avoid shows/movie or games that are full of them.
but the few horror that catch my attention I have really loved. Hereditary was one of the only things in media that genuinely scared me past the age of 10, blood borne is one of, if not straight up my favorite game. and it certainly has my favorite world in video games. made in abyss is one of my favorite anime, and I absolutely loved ddlc.
I do see why another and higurashi are more unique than this, but the thing is what makes those about the same level or worse for me isn't really their idea.
Another was insulting as both a horror and a mystery. I don't know how you feel about it, but another was genuinely just not even slightly unnerving. the deaths times were so obvious. and they looked goofy as hell. but what truly rubbed me the wrong way was the mystery. I can not describe how insulted I felt by that. if satisfaction had an opposite the mystery in another would be it. I felt like an idiot.
for higurashi, I do have a lot of problems with it. but every time I have mentioned them to a fan, they talk about how it's "explained in the VN".
my problem with higurashi is actually the opposite. the mystery and horror are pretty good. what I really dislike is the story. specially how they ended it with power of friendship and an unexplained cliff hanger.
I mean here's the thing, if this doesn't tie up everything which is likely to happen, I'm going to say it's worse than those 2 shows. even now it probably is somewhat weaker. but is it really 5.75 on mal level bad?
that's below tokyo ghoul re s2 which is to this day the worst anime season that I have finished.
and below redo of healer which was both controversial and shit.
there are so many shows that are worse than this. to be a below 6/10 on mal is the bottom of the barrel level of being shit.
and I really don't think this THAT bad. it's not great. it's a pretty average story with decent characters and below average production. but it's not nearly bad enough to be this low.
I think a score in the 5 range makes sense for this, but it's true that MAL is very easy going with ratings and pretty bad stuff ends up with a 6 minimum when it comes to seasonal anime. I haven't seen Redo of Healer, but it looks like it would have a lower score based on what I've heard and the clips I've seen...
Maybe the only exception where ratings are often lower than I'd expect is with certain older stuff or OVAs.
I haven't seen Another in a long time, but I actually see it as more of a comedy/horror. I remember the direction the mystery went in was very strange/silly.
You mean the original Higurashi ending? Yeah, I get tired of the "The VN takes care of this" people. XD
I still haven't finished Kai. I don't think I have a problem with the story of Higurashi so much as how it is sometimes told. I really didn't like the ending of the original Higurashi. It felt very rushed and awkward.
TheBlockernator is right though that people are pretty irritable when it comes to dubs on here, and that being the only option so far probably does hurt this more than the usual average-tier series that might end up with a 6 instead. It'd be interesting to have an alternate exposure with Japanese subs and see how much the ratings differ.
