You shouldn't be friends with that person if he can't respect the things you enjoy.
In fact, you're not too old to watch ANY type of Cartoon. I have a friend who's 18 but still watches kid's cartoon and I find it wholesome.

I feel old watching it at 21. I'm surprised to see 19-22 being the second most common age group.

I wouldn't say so, but i have definitely felt like that. Plus some anime i used to like as a kid dont resonate with me anymore, and that's ok. Art is for everyone, so make sure you try to experiment on different things and try to find what would suit your taste nowadays.

no one is too old for anything. some people grew up watching anime and it's a pretty common thing to be extremely obsessed with anime or even a typical watcher regardless your age, especially on mal you'll find people of all ages. but the real question here is, why is this in aot forums lmao

I would totally argue that it's a shounen. It's a very edgy shounen with a good story, so even I like it, but the way the main cast handles emotions, especially Eren is totally shounen for the first 3 seasons at least.
In the 4th they kinda grew up, but ye...
Levi and Erwin are good seinen characters though.
the gore, violence, characters and everything perfectly fits the seinen demographic, just because it don't have naked rape/sex scenes so, it's a fine shonen. Still I wouldn't say it's a shonen tho. Although most seinen fans are young but it's more of a seinen, perfect for adult males.

Bringing up gore and violence in a shounen vs seinen discussion definitely sounds like what a kid would say to sound cooler.
Like in my elementary school there was a club room with computers, and <10 years old kids were watching Happy tree friends (and actual IRL gore) to be edgy.
Animated gore is pretty easy to get used to. And like the same for the horror genre in general, it's only scary if you don't interact with it, and then it just becomes boring.
Anyway, got side tracked.

Like there are seinen comedies, that you could give to kids without scarring them emotionally, but not understanding any of the jokes.
And like a while ago I found that Armed Librarians: The Book of Bantorra anime, and it's literally a battle shounen, just with a different, more subtle way of portraying the character's emotions.

So while you could argue that little kids shouldn't be watching gory stuff like AoT, it's not a show that would require the life experience of an adult, because everything is so in your face...(Making Eren annoying in the process.)

No really, it can be enjoyed at pretty much any age.
That said, don't just dump your friend like that; he might simply associate anime with 'cartoon' and have a few stereotypes here and there but its not so offending that you immediately need to destroy your friendship.

Not at all. I'm in my 30s, and watch more anime now than I did ten years ago.

Granted, my tastes have changed, but I still love the medium.

There is no "too old" for anime. This ist just bullshit. Its like saying u are too old for movies. Just bc animation is mainly used in child shows doesnt mean animation is for childs. This ist just a dumb stereotype.
If u like anime than you like anime, that doesnt make you childish in any way... ^^

Once some classmates told me I'm too old to play Yu-Gi-Oh!...we were 10, lmao. Point is that certain people will always feel the need to label something as childish simply because they don't happen to be into it. That's actually childish.

I'm 24 and anime will probably always have a place in my heart.

22? Sheesh! Someone get this grampa into a retirement home!

I kid, of course. I'm 23 and haven't felt like this. I know 30+ year olds who consume anime without a care in the world.

Your concern honestly reminds me of this Nintendo Switch age demographics chart where it shoots way UPWARDS at 20+. It dips downwards in the teens aka (too old for Nintendo types lol)

Saying someone is "too old" for anime is like saying they are "too old" for paintings or sculptures. It makes no sense to be too old for an entire medium of art. No offense to your friend, but I expect that they have very little experience with anime.

Yes you might not be the target audience, but nobody is stopping you from enjoying something you love.

I mean no offense to your friend but you can’t really be too old for an entire medium. Maybe a genre, that’s still debatable, but at the end of the day it shouldn’t really matter anyway. It sort of just shows how their expectations of what anime is are completely misconstrued.

I'm also 22 and discovered Anime for me at the age of 20. I say you're never too old for Anime - I wish I'd discovered it earlier but I now think often the best stories are animated. But everyone should whatch what they like regardless of thinking it is wrong just because of the age (bc some people see anime as just childish stuff).

How many threads are like this now? Sigh I thought it was common sense by now but oh well.

My age is classified, Ducks have to keep their info close to them. :)

Animation is just another form of entertainment compared to live action. Honestly couldn't care less what a product's audience is I'll still get into it. I enjoy platformers for the gameplay not the story/message, the E or General rating doesn't hold me back or embarrass me. I'm not against colour either or only gritty things.

I like others enjoy animation for many reasons.

I like it because you can have the camera anywhere, make something completely silly and it still work, make everything fit or not fit the artstyle, among other factors of story telling and the usual things to associate with art. Claymation (think Wallace and Gromit for example or the darker stuff people barely point out with Aardman Animation, seriously some of their dark stuff is really interesting. Even Creature Comforts is pretty interesting even if just Clay animals talking about things XD I watched Shaun the Sheep and was intrigued at the ideas they had per episode without dialogue just actions because it's just interesting to see what the creators have come up with), Hand Drawn, Stop Motion, whichever I enjoy them all.

I enjoyed cartoons as a kid, I got into Anime at the end of high school same as I got into Electronic Dance Music because I wanted a change.

I mean animation used to be used for military (think back in the day) just like the internet, then business then the average person to enjoy. We have animation youtubers for a reason covering many things about it, reviewing them and so on, people enjoy anything.

Restricting one's self due to 'age' or whatever perception is their loss. Enjoying whatever whether intended for your demographic or not. I'll gladly watch something for kids, teens or adults and not care. Sure the messages aren't intended for me or the jokes but I'll still get something out of it or I'll have something to recommend a kid having seen it.

Otherwise by that logic only reviewers could watch kids shows to say if it's safe or something stupid like that. I mean Disney films may be intended for kids/families whether the jokes were appropriate or not. I mean I don't care fro US animation (even if many are made in Japan, Canada, etc.) but there is adult cartoons and kids/teen audience ones.

Can we not be interested in video games, drawing or something because people have that old mindset/outdated stigma mindset. Just enjoy anything. Most of us on here enjoy the medium for different reasons and all varying ages. I mean we wouldn't be on a forum about the medium for no reason and not all children are on forums/some probably don't even know what a forum is.

22 is still young. If you were 45+ then maybe, but seinen is aimed primarily at 18-30 year olds and there's still plenty of people older than that who watch it. Even if you were so old that it truly was weird, does that matter? If you're enjoying it then who cares what other people think?

This is prefect advice on the matter. Some people just grew up with negative stereotypes about adults watching anime. Its not anything that cant be fixed and definitely shouldn't be what ends a friendship.
