Hotaru no Haka, I saw this movie with a friend, and despite knowing that its genre was drama and that it's about the Second World War, I never imagined how sad it could be. I remember crying for a long time after the film, but my friend didn't drop a single tear haha

Was it just me who bawled my eyes out during the graduation scene of Sakura-sou no Pet na Kanojo?

And then on the rewatch i cried even harder than on the first watch. Cried harder than my nonexistent Ex did when i pretended to break-up with her.

....Which is just weird.

The Kirby anime of all things. There's like 3 episodes in particular (Ep 015, 020 and 042 from the original airing) where I need to set a day aside to watch one of them so that I can be depressed for the rest of the day whereas I just binge on the rest of the episodes.

Casshern Sins is the first one to come to mind. I just started it because the premise seemed intriguing, and now I'm on the verge of crying at the end of almost each episode and I even did cry at the end of the last episode I've seen (episode 9) This show is messing with my feelings in a way I didn't expect.
There is also Made in Abyss, I didn't at all expect to cry and yet, the episode 13 turned me into a waterfall.
I've got a few other exemples, like Kaiba or Akage no Anne.
But the thing with me is that I always cry when I didn't expect it, and most of the time keep a totally straight face when the show is known as being a tear-jerker (the only exception being Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, but the moment that made me cry isn't the one that made others cry. And I just remembered that the same goes for Hotaru no Haka.). I think I don't work correctly.

Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor

Thrillers are probably my very most favorite genre, and yet, crying is not the typical reaction I expect to have from any of them. Chills and goosebumps, a racing mind, blood and adrenaline pumping and a state of excitement and sometimes delirium at the existential stakes at play, yes, but not crying. To be fair, a lot of the characters in Kaiji in-universe were frequently crying, but that wasn't synced up with my own and isn't what I'm talking about.

I certainly did not expect to shed a tear watching parasyte but that certain death scene saddened me.
And most recently after watching the final episodes of sailor moon, I knew about galaxia and all the stuff she made but it still made me shed a tear, I don't know how I fared when I was little but I was prob traumatized.

Two shows for two different reasons:

Hinamatsuri seemed like just another comedy, but it gets really emotional and has proven itself as one of my favorite shows of all time.

I first ignored K-on!! as that generic cute girls doing cute things show and expected a hollow slice of life experience. After getting hooked on it, the final episodes and the movie hit way harder than expected.

I've become quite the crybaby in these last years when watching anime. Before it was really hard to make me cry/tear up and now it's pretty easy, I don't know why lol
Anyway, the ones I least expected to cry were Gintama, JoJo, One Piece, Kono Oto Tomare! and My Roommate is a Cat.
Oh and recently Uchuu Kyoudai. A few days ago I binged 4 episodes and cried with all of them. I had to stop watching because I couldn't stop crying lmao... Never expected I'd get so emotional with this show.

I actually ended getting really emotional during Rascal Does not Dream about Bunny Senpai. It was just beautiful overall. The way they portrayed the character's journies through adolescents was amazing. The scene where the protagonists confessed his love for his love interest is comedic while also being heartwarming

This choice might be a bit poor, since some people do expect to cry from it, but I choose One Piece. I'm gonna be frank, I did not expect a long running shounen anime to make me cry, considering that most of the time, shounen is built on action. But, god, did I cry during the Arlong Park arc. For those of you that haven't watched One Piece, if you have lots of time on your hands, start chipping away at it, because while it seems like an insurmountable monolith, if it gets you hooked, you'll stay hooked as long as you skip the filler arcs. Most viewers consider the Arlong Park arc the turning point, where the series gets good, and I agree. It starts out incredibly slow, but the Arlong Park arc is handled masterfully, with incredibly impactful scenes, and a beautiful, but sorrowful story.

I have cried watching 6 anime. Those are some obvious tear jerkers like Clannad, Anohana, Maquia, Angel Beats, A Place Further, and the most obvious tear jerker of them all...K-On.

It was during the final concert when they sang U and I and Tenshi ni Fureta yo, and when they realized they would never get to meet up in the clubroom again. I honestly cried harder from K-On than I did watching Angel Beats. That is just not right.

For me it was Death parade. Yes, I knew that the intro is a trap but I thought that it's gonna be just a dark show and only this. I didn't expect it to get so serious and sad. I cried the entire 2 final episodes.

I don't like sob stories, I actively avoid them, there are only a few exceptions where I liked the sad parts of a show. That means almost every show that made me cry was "surprising" in a way.
That said, I certainly did not expect Gintama of all things to get me to tear up quite as often as it did - second would be Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans ( as if MSG 00 wasn't already sad enough man ), I started to hate the show for it, so that is sad in itself <.< Not touching anything Gundam related for a while.

If we are allowed to mention manga that would be Fire Punch, it seemed such a fun read at first but once you start really thinking about it, oof.

I did not expect from an anime, which was filled with memes and lighthearted moments to be able to bring some tears to my eyes. I had truly grown fond of the characters even though they were annoying sometimes.

I don’t think I’ve full on sobbed in an anime since Paradise Kiss. Nowadays I’ll sort of just tear up or get watery eyes and this could be scenes that are happy — like in the recent season of Haikyuu! I teared up because I just loved how positive and hardworking everyone was. Yeah, now I just assume that certain scenes or dialogue will have similar, sporadic emotional points for me

Mirai Nikki. A lot of people are split on what they think of the anime, and it also being a survival game type anime, I was not expecting anything tearjerking. Yet I teared up at least 3 different times. Crazy.

Also, Grisaia series. I went into it thinking it would be another VN adaptation that would be a disservice to the source, but I teared up in it too. I cried plenty more when I actual read through the entire visual novel series. Damn it's good.
