the 11 ep was already really bad but just wow....
did he really break all the 12 swords at the end.. i guess the storywriter was smoking some weird shit when he wrote this
and the togame dying scene wanted to be as dramatic as possible.. as if i would care about that shitty character ..pffff

10/10 ! I think the story's main theme is that history is incorrigible. I like how Kiki's plan failed. In the end, history self-corrected itself. Itezora tribe, maniwani, Togame, 12 swords have all vanished; then a new shogunate rose. As if all traces of Kiki's attempt to falsify vanished.

I don't think Togame's death was as disappointing for the fact that she died so much as how it happened. Granted this anime is fast moving in general and people crop up and die all the time and they don't show much care for the strings attached to your heart in taking out sympathetic characters right after you've bonded, Togame's death was just too sudden and instantaneous. I had a suspicion through episode ten that her death was going to happen, but then it just did. Hitei's goon shows up and bam she's gone. That the overwhelmingly powerful Shichika could do nothing about it was kind of a shock. He's a lot like Kirito in SOA in that he is so powered up that nothing seems to be able to oppose him and he shows that in this episode, but somehow as though it is nothing his love can get killed right beside him. I also agree with the commenter that brought up the idea of sticking the lightning healing blade in her, it seems like a practical solution that wasn't even considered--as long as she lasted talking, for it to be impractical he would have needed to take more than twenty minutes to get to the castle. It was just unsatisfying to see her die, especially after all the hope you build up for her becoming a sheath for him and in the act continuing to improve them both. Her final character reveal, or lies to help him live on depending on how you look at it, felt a bit forced and weird too.

That all being said the last couple episodes felt rushed and the conclusion kind of forced--almost akin to the ending of the original Evangelion which was caused by budget constraint, etc. I had high hopes for this series after being drawn in by Bakemonogatari and the Monogatari series in general. I was very happy to get some more action with all of the dialogue and a, mostly, more definitive reality as part of the story. However, this feels like an earlier less polished work of the author in the end.

I liked the series but the drama in the last episode just seems....forced. Actually all the plot revelations seemed forced.

I don't understand why people are complaining about the ending. The anime was consistent in quality all the way through; just because your character died, doesn't make the anime worse. This is the reason a lot of shounen series are afraid to kill off characters.

That being said, I was disappointed. This anime kept building up every episode just to end up not satisfying that build-up over and over again. The fights were yawn-worthy (they really blew the chance on using that stylization to its full potential) and the only characters that seemed to matter were the mains.

This series had so much going for it.

Boss rush mode made sense to me. He knew all of their special abilities, no longer had restrictions, and didn't care about dying. Speed running that shit! Amazing show, I wish i didn't accidentally spoil myself on Togame's death.

Her death was rather... uncalled for. But then again, I guess it was the only way Shichika could amass that much power.

I kinda saw it coming. When Togame was telling Shichika about last words and how they should never be said until you die a couple of episodes back, I thought to myself that either Togame or Shichika are going to die later on. I saw it coming, yet I'm still depressed about it (well, depressed is kinda overstating it, but you know what I mean).

Great anime overall.

A tragic awesome conclusion to a fantastic anime. 10/10

Togame dying was sad. It's interesting how she preferred to die while in love, rather than living on w/ vengeance and schemes. Seems like the burdens (shown as the white snake) finally lifted away and she truly loved Shichika. I understand now that she was lying to Shichika when she said their whole entire journey was a lie. It was just to make the pain easier for him ;( You can confirm it because her left eye turned purple during that time, meaning she was scheming.

Shichika's new clothing matching Togame's, the little montage of Togame, and imagining she was still there announcing the match to begin before dueling Emonzaemon made my heart ache even more. TT.TT

That final cheerio was the cherry on top. Cheerio!

Those 10mins are the best moments of Katanagatari. The most importatnt reason for me to watch an anime is to be touched at the end. And I was deeply moved. Especially how Togame tried to convince Shichika of living happily on without her. I mean everyone had to be moved by the death scence unless you are... just forget it.

At the end Shichika even tries to achieve Togame's dream which moved me to tears. And this proves his eternal love for her..incredible man.

Cherio..!

Togame's death wasn't as sad as I thought it would be. I think I was feeling more for Shichika's loss than Togame dying. I kind of felt like she got what was coming to her.

That Boss Rush Mode in the second half was EPIC! I fell in love with Shichika all over again...

Damn you, Nisio Isin, you're too awesome.

so many memorable moments :

- Togame's last words. That scene was so beautiful, especially when the "snake" disappeared right after she finished saying all those "lies".. and then her eye turned normal, and she finally said her TRUE feelings.

- Shicika went berserk killing anyone on his path. Those killer eyes. A "perfect" deviant blades.

- His resolve to face death. He fights to find the answer and finish the journey, not as Togame's loyal sword, but as a person with his own will.

- Although i don't really like Emonzaemon because he always obeys anything his master wishes, but i kinda admire his absolute loyalty at the same time. It's a strange feeling. That battle to the death was awesome.

- About Togame and Hitei, I always thought that there's more to their relationship than just a rival enemy, and i'm glad that i wasn't wrong, they always respect each other. Togame asked Shichika to tell Hitei that she thanked her, and when Shichika asked Hitei, she responded that she didn't dislike her.. The order to kill a daughter of a traitor was inevitable, I'm sure that Hitei already foresaw what will happen if Togame survived and managed to finish the katana hunt, and that decision to kill her was the best. In a way, she achieved her own goal and Togame's goal at the same time.

- Shichika's cherrio. Different from the usual cheerio, this was the only moment where hearing a cheerio made me sad and remember her death again. IMO, it also can be seen as a way for Shichika to pay her a respect and to tell her that he will move on and fulfill her wish.

- I'm so happy to see the credits scene, Itezora wasn't alone anymore and she looked like she was having fun, also Kiguchi got a lot of students so the legacy continues. I'm satisfied.

- Post credits scene. Hitei followed Shichika. She cut her hair and wore Zaemon's mask, i think i know the reasons, haha.. Glad to know that she's being honest to herself. And with those scars, Shichika looked more badass than ever.

- And my favorite scene is, of course when the Narrator said the final words and completed the epic story of Katanagatari. Seeing all those characters again, and finally a final shot of Togame (no pun intended). I LOVED IT!

Beautiful story, epic and memorable journey, eye candy visuals, awesome voice acting and animations. Katanagatari has it all.

9/10, cheerio!

I was spoiled on Togame's death at the end but that didn't change anything; I was still deeply moved by her dying confession. I'm really surprised by how much I ended up liking the pairing. Katanagatari really did depend on how much you liked the characters and I am glad to say that I loved both Shichika and Togame.

Was pinning it as 8/10 most of the way through but the last episode forced me to bump it to the 9/10 it fully earned. Beautiful art, soundtrack, two beautiful unforgettable characters.

Fixed.

In my book Togame didn't have to die, especially not just like this. Everything after her being shot seems out of place. A cheap try to end this anime fast, one sign for that was Togame's speech that she wanted to kill Shichika.
It's not that I am against killing a maincharacter - unless it's a dog that I know for over a decade - but the way it was done here lacks everything.
I hate ends like this. You watch a show, see the story progress and at the end everything was for nothing after all, status quo all over again - at least from what was told in the story. So me still giving it a 7 is very generous.

Awwwwnnnn, now I'm sad but oh well. It just show how the serie mature and more than just action and comedy. I think it was able to succeed in a way to go at the opposite of one would have expected.

Togame death scene was so fuckin' sad. But at least, she seem to have died in peace.

The fighting scene were really epic. Emonzaemon fight was really brutal, with the blood flowing everywhere. The one with Yoroi was pretty messy too, with the blood destroying the armor from inside. It's really ironic when we think about. They pretty much collected 11 katanas during 11 months to bring them to one place and to break them all in the end. He have gone against every order Togame gave him, to protect the katanas, to protect her, to protect himself and to forget about her.

When he killed the Shogun was hilarious. ''Do you think I give a damn about this country... CHEERIO!!''. May ''cheerio!'' live on forever.

At first, I didn't know why he spared Hitei life. But after reading about the end and thinking about it, I think I understood. Even if Hitei orderred Emonzaemon to kill Togame, she was just like Togame trying to follow her father dream. Shichika judged that the real reason Togame was dead was the fact that the Shogun asked her to retrieve the twelve perverted katana. In the end, Hitei, having nothing left to do since she failed her goal, decided to follow Shichika.

I'm glad that he made the map like Togame would have wanted him to :)

There is just one thing I never understood. What was her weird eyes suppose to do? His ''activation'' didn't seem reliated to some linear trigger, it seemed to activate randomly. I would have to check the serie again, but not now. The ending have too much of a feels rollercoaster.

I'm really happy with the way this series ended, save for Togame's death. But she was able to speak her true feelings because of it, so that's a plus. Everything she said was right in my opinion. She did use pawns, as well as being one herself. But her feelings were still genuine in the end.

9/10, Katanagatari was a beautiful story that kept me entertained until the end. Cheerio...

I'd been pondering as to whether or not this show deserved a 9 (I honestly believed that it deserved an 8 because I thought so much of the series was pointless) but there is no doubt it now deserves the score.

If Togame lived, this show would have been incredibly pointless. Okay. They're happy together now and can explore Japan in spite of all the other dead, pointless people. The culmination of 576 minutes has arrived at... a couple of steps from where they started?

A series such as this should not end at the same pace that it starts with. Each individual episode I believe acted as its small part in order to make this final episode a very, very big whole (apart from the Shikizaki part which is still a major wtfwhy? to me) which gives purpose to Katanagatari's very title as a sword story (yay for meaningful titles, we need more of these in the industry...)

That being said, there probably was a way for Katanagatari to end satisfyingly with Togame still breathing (although I imagine it would involve Emonzaemon, Hitei, and a couple of other supports still living) but this story has already ended, so it isn't incredibly necessary.

Music and animation are 10/10 this series. However, those are the ONLY things that really hyped me up. The story and characters didn't make too much sense. I disagree with all of their actions based on the circumstances they were in.

Nanami was somewhat cool, in that she wasn't what she seemed at first. That was the only interesting plot line, and she got killed in a rush after multiple episodes of hype and foreshadowing. She even had the best sound track.

7/10 for me overall.

Actually, I was fine with Togame's death, even thought she spoke for an awful long time while being just slightly confusing to follow.
Of course, it's sad that she died, but it was more like a "plot point", a way for Shichika to level up his skills.

It was quite awesome seeing Shichika destroying the swords (so much bloooodd, hahah), and I'm really glad that he spared the girl with the bladeless sword and that she didn't die.

The climax, though, was a bit lackluster. I mean, killing a pathetic shogun to conclude a series? Eh.

Also, it really bothered me that Hitei-hime ended up following Shichika in the end. The atmosphere had shippy feelings, and they were invasive and didn't feel right.
I barely know much about Hitei-hime, except that she's selfish and manipulative.
I guess that's similar to Togame, but I'm not emotionally prepared yet to jump on this sudden new ship.
It'd be nice, though, for Shichika to find a new purpose, or love, in his life, but NOT SO SOON GEEZ.

Also, the acquisition of Hakutou Hari was strange, since it was pushed to the background. The owner of Hakutou Hari was presented as a powerful and mysterious person right at the start of the series, and in the end, he became the "Oh, we killed him a while back, he's not really interesting" c haracter. I was disappointed. He had a cool design.
(My favorite Maniwa Heads were Oshidori, Pengin, and Mitsubachi. Higaki was also a really interesting character.)

Still, this anime series was quite good. I gave it an 8/10. So many deaths, though. So many. Pointless deaths in the end, since Kiki's plan failed. It's frustrating.

I'm almost happy with how this ended. While during most of watching it was a 5/10, the last 3 episodes were a 9/10. I averaged it to 7/10 as final mark. Emotional impact was quite strong because showing one's feelings was one the strongest part of Katanagatari.

Other than that, I have to say I was mostly disappointed. It followed a strict pattern, which isn't a bad thing but it made me less curious about what happens. Usually, I'm fine with anime that follow a pattern but this had pattern in a pattern in a pattern beside a pattern. I mean, the whole thing was formatted one sword in an episode. Episodes were formatted in arriving to a strange place, bad jokes, meeting owner of a deviant blade, a sob story and eventually beating the owner. The irregularities were very very minor and there were only 2 big instances; beating Sabi Hakuhei and obtaining Hakutou Hari and finding Dokutou Mekki. That's very small number especially since one of these cases wasn't particularly interesting.

Characters weren't all that interesting either and it took me almost the whole thing to at least respect Shichika and Togame. The rest were completely shallow blank slates that existed for Shichika to have more characters to kill and completely pointless drama that was there as a lame attempt to pretend it's has any chance to look realistic. Oh, they also pulled magic from their asses and called it fighting techniques.

Plot itself was very interesting the it had a very nice premise. I liked that it got all the more complicated by all the time fiddling (which failed anyway) and it explained at least a little how the hell those swords worked. I feel like the potential was wasted by focusing on overdone battles that could have easily been a contest to show a flashier punch/strike. Fighting itself had very very VERY VERY little sense and that's ignoring all the magic ninjutsu even Naruto would be ashamed of. Somehow, the logic of this show is that experienced martial artists are doomed to lose because they're experienced and inexperienced random bashing is the perfect way of fighting. That's seriously an offense to everything martial arts do and stand for. That's like saying that a person that has never held a gun can shoot better than a professional soldier. Or a person that has never seen a car can drive better than a professional driver. And don't get me started on the whole Nanami deal.

Other than this, so many things are just off that it would be too much to list everything. It's a real shame that the first 9 episodes weren't done the same way as the last 3. It would have been much better.

Start dating the person, who killed your Togame.
nice.

It will be the first time Im giving an anime 1/10 simply because of the ending, which I didn't understand at all.

---
Now that Im not as angry, I'll give it 7/10. It would've had a better score if it wasn't for the epilogue. I just can't accept that he would go with her. When Togame died he sounded, as if she is the only one for him, and in the end he decided to go with her murderer...

So I was watching the series over again, and I noticed something during ep.2 when Togame is going over Shichika's catchphrases.

At the end of ep.2 when Shichika says Uneri's catchphrase was so cool, Togame tells him it wasn't a catchphrase at all. It was a final will; a phrase you only get to say once in your entire life, which is why it's so much more powerful/meaningful.

I think that parallels Shichika pretty well when he yells "Cheerio!" at the end. Not that he's at the end of his life, but he's definitely at the end of his journey/story. Maybe? No? Oh well, awesome nonetheless :)

FUnny. I would have dropped my score if Togame lived. Seems someone can't take a real ending.

automatic 10 for main character death... great ending... i liked the togame flashback before the emonzaimon (?) fight...

it was saddening to see her die, but it made the story alot better, im glad some authors have balls to kill off a main character...

An anime I never expected I liked so much!
At first I was uncertain about watching this because of the artstyle but it was the story and characters that allowed me to watch the entire katanagatari series in 1 go.
Heck! 50min x 12ep was tiring but I loved it anyways.
- the animation was okay but it was best during the action scenes
- the characters was the strongest point of this movie
- sound was 'all right..." and i guess it fits a historical genre anime
- story was great!
It was too bad Togame actually died during this last ep because I would've liked to see how Togame and shichika's relationship would have ended. But that didn't stop the story from dying as well!
And so... it ended with a shounen-style ending with Shichika bossing through the Shogunate palace and destroying the inital objective of the story (collecting the swords)
It was also surprising that our protagonist didn't end up avenging the person who was soley responsible for the death of his lover.
Thus, I would like to end this with a "Cheerio".

to be fair to the creators, they had a lotta foreshadowing that predicted togame's death
and i think it was a necessary/genius development, especially her last words
overall i thought it was kinda similar to samurai champloo except for all the deaths lol
a bit tiring and repetitive in the middle but well worth the watch 9/10.

I just marathoned Katanagatari and I can't really say if I liked or hated this last episode... probably more on the hate side of it.

I am the kind of people that gets really attached and identify myself to the main characters when immersing myself within an anime (or book) and dying or watching the love of my life die is not something enjoyable to me.

I will not discuss it further for now since it's still fresh and, as I am still collecting my "torn into pieces" heart, my opinion is a bit biased.

HOWEVER there is something I cannot get out of my mind: What do you think Shichika said to Togame when she died ? (since it's an animated character lipreading is a bit tricky)

Edit: Nevermind the last question, I read someone say that it is not in the novel (we don't know either or he doesn't say anything ?), I guess his last word to his love are for her only.

Edit: Nevermind the last question, I read someone say that it is not in the novel (we don't know either or he doesn't say anything ?), I guess his last word to his love are for her only.

i did exactly the same thing marathoned it and my heart broken with the last episode, its was so sad, but you know what? i think its was a good show, and no we cant have always a happy ending, but i must say i was extremely attached at Togame, so when i seen her dying i was like NOOOOOOOOOO WTF.. NOT HER. anyway im still emotional becuz i come just to finish it

p.s 8.5/10 for me

I just had to wrote something to vent out my frustrations. Decided to watch this because of Spice & Wolf. It seemed to me that the 2 MC were pretty much in the same situation romantically. It really does erk me how Togame gets killed off though. I honestly see no reason why she had to die. It would seem to me that if they stuck the sword his sister used to save her she would have been fine. Then it's like why kill her? Is it that much and inconvenience to kill her? I also had mixed feelings about her last words it seems like she actually would have killed him in the end.. I just don't know what to make of it. Personally I think it would have been better if there was plot twist like him killing the shogun makes everything go back to the way it was where she is alive and her father never died or something to keep her alive but at the same time he would know everything from the past year and would just watch over her silently.
If the author was going to reveal that Togame was going to kill the MC even though she loved him it would have been nice to see some inner monoluge to back up her dying words and not to be blind sided. As a viewer it leaves conflicting feelings of whether you hate her or like her...

This anime felt a bit like Samurai Champloo

Some people just can't accept Togame's death but I think it was necessary for the plot. Nevertheless the ending was superb. I am glad to watch this anime even though its 2014.

10/10 in my book.

I am really torn about that ending. Not so much about Togames death as about how her character is marginalized in the end. It doesnt seem like her death left any lasting impression whatsoever on shichika. Sure, initally, he gets angry and goes all berserk, but it all seems forgotten after he recovered. He simply substitutes her for hitei hime and off they go on their merry ways. What makes it even worth is the duplicity: they are doing exactly the same as he did with Togame as in roaming the country and occasionally teasing each other playfully... it just doesnt sit well with me.

If youre going to kill your main character, which many people have become attached to, at least make it mean something and dont just return to business as usual as soon as the death has completed its purpose as a plot device. In that sense, Shichika dying for her sake wouldve been a much more befitting and satisfying ending.

On another note: Why couldnt they implement shikizaki kikis plan after all? In the end, everything happend as he foresaw: Shichika became the complete 13th deviant blade and killed the shogun. How in hell could it happen, that they simply let his son take over the throne? This has got to be some kind of strange joke...

Anyways, still a great series: 8,5/10

Maybe I can't appreciate "good anime" or whatever bullshit, but I felt like this show literally sapped a year's worth of my life watching it.

From good, to amazing, to awesome, to meh, to ugh, to groan, to finally a "god dammit".
