I absolutely dig the vibes I'm getting from this! The historical backdrop, the frequent allusions to marine adventures, the lingering sense of a disaster waiting to strike an otherwise serene and obscure little seaside locale, and the whole premise involving political upheavals and feuding clans – all of these are very well executed. Having not read the manga, I went into this first episode blind and without any preconceived notions.
Have to make a special note of the background score because it's beautiful and really elevates the scenes. Orchestral pieces, soft and melodic piano notes, and post-rock-esque beats – that's a pretty damn good range.

The 2nd season is airing right now, with the 3rd episode dropped today. And man, it’s so good so far and just really made me want to rewatch the first season. Can you believe that I had initially left it with a 6/10? Somehow I wasn’t quite satisfied. But I got my thoughts together and then fixed it at a 7/10 which it is sitting at right now. Honestly though right now I think it deserves more than that, because wow what an opening episode. It feels like it’s all new, like I’m watching it for the first time, but even better, since I am excited and anticipating the events that are to come. I forgot about a lot of this actually, like the slave being found in the snow and somehow being able to be resuscitated, and Thors buying him at a hefty price for a dying slave, all so that he could die in peace. And the person he was buying him from, Halfdan, I forgot about him as well. Surely I’d have remembered a guy who put on such a spectacle with some mere chains right? I guess his appearances were just limited to this first episode or so.

Thorfinn was told that their ancestors ran away like cowards. But what I always wondered was: what is Vinland? Was that the place where their ancestors had fled from when they refused to follow the new “king?” I guess Vinland = Norway. Makes sense, Norway is quite beautiful.

What an intense like opening for this seinen anime.
As a manga reader I'm hyped af to watch this first arc in an anime format and the artsytle is just gorgeous imo.

(Also that opening song is banger and the ending song other than being named "torches" actually sound a hell lot of cool after this great first episode it has a melancholy like ending which already touch my heart so bad it's wonderful)

23 minutes, it took me 23 minutes for Vinland Saga to bring me to tears. I read the manga up to the end of this backstory arc, and in 23 minutes it already managed to overwhelm any of the emotion the manga created. I was really enjoying what I read way back when, but the immaculately melodramatic OST, voice direction, it all took it to the next level.

Why the hell have I been waiting so long to do this? smh

There's so much I didn't n notice watching Vinland Saga the first time around. 1) The sister is gorgeous but "entitled" she always asks for a slave just so she doesn't have to work. 2) Thorfinn is truly so childlike at the beginning he has such a pure soul. 3) damn I didn't even know it was possible to rip someone's face off like that. 4) I never realised how big Thor actually is when he stood up bro was so scary.
The opening and the outro IS SO BLOODY GOOD.

It's not the worst pilot ever but I didn't understand the point of this. It's like the first episode is not complete, is missing information... I feel the second episode should explain things. This is a bad, bad first episode.

Great visuals. So far can't say much about the story, as we don't know the significance of these events yet, but seems intriguing as a beginning.

That's what I'm bothered. The pilot should set up things ready for character development in episode 2 but the episode's script doesn't explain a thing what they should do or what is the problem they must solve. What's their dream, the goal or whatever. Just ended like the episode was cut in half... I've never seen an pilot like that. I'm not saying the anime is bad as I only watched this ep, but this ep is meh. 4 stars tops, I'm not hyped but I'll keep watching. It's too soon to drop it.

Exactly this. After the first episode, I have no clue what they were trying to tell me. What is the point? What are we looking forward to? I don't say it's terrible, I am just confused since Pilot episodes usually try to hook you. And this one seemed pretty random to me honestly.
We will see what the next episodes will bring

Yup, it's a dog-eat-dog world alongside with kill or be killed. The world is that annoyingly simple. I wish I could kill countless capitalists the way Thors were killing those soldiers. Haha! OP sounds badass, btw.

Compared to today, adventure travel during those times was much more fulfilling, with much of the world still unexplored and places you can only hear from via word of mouth. Nowadays, with an abundance of tourists, the experience can be quite frustrating despite the convenience it offers. Furthermore, social media has ruined the element of surprise, as one can easily search and peek into different places on the internet. Consequently, visiting a city or a mountain feels similar to the previous one, making it challenging to differentiate between them. However, I am aware that it was easy to become enslaved, die in war, or perish on the journey, as travel was extremely perilous during those times. I suppose no era is perfect.

ED sounds good, too!

Boring start, unrealistic and badly directed combat scene in the very beginning in a generic ninja nu-style. Boring archetypes from the start: a frown dad, an eager son and a clingy sister. It's enough to watch the opening to know what it is about: no deep plot, no twists, no interesting characters, banal motivations and enemies. I bet there will be more uninspiring combat scenes just like in a beginning but in the middle and in the end of a season.

Vikings have gotten their fare share of screen time in western media, an and endless number of video games, fairytales, movies, books, TV shows and so on have been devoted to them, of varying quality.

What can possibly be done with Vikings now that's different or refreshing?

Well, what if we let the Japanese adapt Vikings? Seem intriguing.
Vinland Saga is sweet and fun. It has a kind of sweet cozy wholesomeness you can't get away with in live action or video games that only works in the animated medium.

At times, tonally, it feels less like History Channel's live action Vikings series and more like the Disney animated film Frozen, and that's what's so sweet about it. It's still serious, violent and mature, it just does that in a cozy & sweet rose-tinted way.

It's a wholesome, sappy, sentimental feel-good show about murderous pirates, slavers and rapists, which you think can't really be done, but apparently it can.

On top of being a huge badass warrior and stoic dad, sacrificing a luxury's worth of sheep for a man on his deathbed really spoke volumes about Thors' character.

1000's Iceland isn't a setting you see every day. Looking forward to where this goes if it already starts out this strong.
