To everyone who did not read or did not understand Xinil's initial post, there is no security issue with MAL itself. One of the moderators was sloppy and used an easily guessable password, used the same password in many other places or was fooled by a phishing attempt. Regardless of what security measures you use, nothing helps if someone finds out an user's password. Next time please read the original post.

It's all but confirmed that it was the phishing. The same popups have been appearing all over the site the past day.

I see people are working hard to resolve this, first the titles, then the episode numbers. This sucks for all parties involved and perhaps better security is needed, but at least you're working on it and it's appreciated.

What were some of the funniest changes to the title?

I've exported my list and am just waiting for this to blow over.

HorribleSubs and Nyaa are still down too :(

Nyaatorrents has gone up briefly a couple times which was enough for most irc bots to grab the files at least. It does keep going back down tho

All the title changes seem to be the same shit, it's not a very good or funny "hack". Hopefully everything gets fixed cause I'd hate to have to redo my entire list.

Yep mine too.

Although my days have not dropped.

How dos it work, was all this changed one by one and it will need to be reverted back one by one?

I've already seen one gore post since this started.

I haven't seen anything because I don't have requests to random (image hosting) sites enabled per default in Request Policy

Subpyro said:
Still, to fall for a phishing site... be careful where you login peeps, give it at least a second to check the URL out, not only the page's layout.

I have http://myanimelist.net/ bookmarked, Firefox warns me when a website tries to redirect or reload the page, so if something's strange, I'll immediately see it.

Ind3x said:
Are your lists really that messed up? On my list only the names got changed. The "Already seen" counts are still fine. They did not get changed on my list.

Same for me. I won't mind having a database rollback, though, and I should take a mental note to export my lists more often for backup purposes.

kuuderes_shadow said:

When this happened before it was the guy posting images all over the forums and he would gain access to the accounts of anyone who clicked on a thread with one of those images on it.

Even when using a sandboxed browser, advertising blockers, NoScript + request policy and not having random (image hoster) sites allowed?

rasenshiruken973 said:
Is there any way to save my anime list somewhere else?

http://myanimelist.net/panel.php?go=export
To export your list (just keep it with the archives) and http://myanimelist.net/import.php to import your list.
In this case, I would wait for the database entries fixes, since the watched episode count is not affected (at least not for me, from what I could see), but only the total episode count and/or the names, which means: completed 12/9001 episodes are likely to return soon to 12/12 again.

Really again?

I just hope they realize it isn't just the titles that have changed (since that was the only thing mentioned that they were fixing and it seems to be fixed already) but also the Alternative titles, synopsis and number of episodes.

This hacker seriously needs to get a life though...

It's not so much 'instant access' as it brings up a password prompt, obviously a phishing attempt to anybody with a functioning brain.

If this is true, then the mod should definitely lose their position. Any idiot who falls for a phishing attempt should not have this level of responsibility with the site.

Not "we" got changed. Our lists and episode counts are perfectly fine. Go for example to http://myanimelist.net/anime/6547/Angel_Beats! and see for yourself what is written under "My Info" on the left panel for you.
It's only those entries in the database that got changed.

Anyway, it's good that I just started a new series and with my slow tempo, I won't finish my currently watched series till next Friday, so I hope the max episode counters get resolved before I'm going to add it as "completed".

edit: html encoding fixed.

Honestly, what is the point to this "hack."

I get when people hack for financial gain or wish to "liberate" classified information (I don't agree with it, but I get it.) But this is just juvenile. The hacking equivalent of drawing a phallus on the wall of a public place.

Grow up. If you need to flex those hacking muscles, then flex them at targets that deserve it: Hate groups, known child molesters, spam centers, companies that knowingly use slave labor, the Fox execs that cancelled Firefly (well, maybe not them, but they did deserve it back then.)

Forgive my little rant, it's just my opinion. Feel free to disagree. It's just really annoys me to see stupid, immature things like this happen.

Here's hoping the MAL team get things back on track.

And I thought what kuuderes_shadow mentioned was a drive-by attack, so if simple phishing is considered "hacking" nowadays, I can sleep well without any worries.

Also, I haven't seen such prompts, but that might be because I haven't been really active in forums and/or because I have third party scripts/requests blocked by default.

If anything, the staff has a better idea of the situation than most of us. I bet they're trying to work out a solution, just give them a day.

I hope they can put something in place to protect MAL from attacks like this in the future.
