Suffering! Suffering!! Suffering!!!!!!!!!

As if we hadn't enough of it in the first season itself, but no this movie was on its own setting some peak bars. Didn't count how many times i had one of my eyes covered while watching.

Now for one thing, i can't comprehend how in the name of god someone can say they are fascinated by how interesting and charismatic our anti-villian or whatever that masked man, Bondrewd was. Like he's a straight up asshole of an antagonist who never had a second thought going to the extremest of the extreme levels just to fulfill his desire to know more about abyss. Should've killed him in my opinion. Okay anyways just leave it at that.

Now the trio onto the six layer, can guess things would would get more worse from here on, I mean that's the trend. Also second season's coming too sometime soon.

8.5/10. I prefer series more I guess.

This was hands down masterful work, I gave the series a 9 as it was emotionally captivating but not to the level of my 10's but oh boy this one, this one had me wrenching in emotions.

I was either in straight awe and disbelief or crying in pain, there was little to no in between when watching this.

The fact there's a season 2 coming out this year is the icing on the cake for me and am greatly looking forward to it.

Bondrewd was such an amazing villain. I would say he's a villain(or just a person willing to go to the extremes) fitting for Made in Abyss as it is a place whose secrets are not very easy to find. Loved this even more than the movie.

I didn't get how we were supposed to react to Bondrewd. Were we supposed to be surprised to see him alive at the end? Riko and Reg showed no emotion when it was shown that he was still alive. It was as if the battle didn't or shouldn't have happened at all. What was it all for? I feel like there wasn't enough anger towards Bondrewd. He turned dissected and turned children into the most agonizing states and learned nothing. Isn't he just going to do the same experiments on countless other children and turn them into cartridges? And what did Riko do all this time? All I saw was her making friends and mourning Prushka. Was that really all it took for her to earn a white whistle? This movie really made me feel unsettled and incomplete.

The world of Made in Abyss truly is captivating... The action was great. And Nanachi is cute. It was a nice film for the most part.

The gore in this movie somewhat ruined it for me. Morbidly disgusting what happened with Prushka - what remains of her body spilling out on Riko, and then having the little animal lick it (brah...). What's also disgusting is how she apparently cheers for Bondrewd as he is killing her, and how the mcs just let him live in the end. And now Prushka is "travelling" with Riko? It's such a sick joke, did Prushka only exist so that she could get murdered and become a whistle for Riko? The conflict with the villain doesn't even get any form of conclusion whatsoever other than "we're moving on lol"? Dark themes are fine but I'm not a fan of how this part of the story was handled, because when the movie was over it left me with feelings of dissatisfaction/ annoyance, after what was otherwise an awesome movie.

Unlike the TV show this was too much and this arc was as brutal as you'd expect.

Sacrifice porn. Just...totally not my thing and had my anxiety up to here. I'm willing to admit the animation was OK but the pace was crap.

I'm glad to be done with it. Not hyped for S3...it can only get darker from here. I'm mad Bondrewd didn't die, I thought they were going to destroy his immortality machine? But then they didn't? WTF?

Fights were really cool. As much as I wanted to like this everything else was pretty bad. Couldn't care about what was going on. Pacing was all over the place. Writing was way better in the anime season. Feels like they were trying to cram in way too much, but I haven't read the manga, so if this is adapted beat for beat then that's on the mangaka and not citrus. Hope season 2 is a lot better than this.

Largely my thoughts as well. Everything just fell flat. The gore stuff didn't bother me though outside of it obviously being there just because guro is one of the mangaka's fetishes which is just lame.

Finally got around to watching it since season 2 releases in a few days. I watched the first season back when it was airing 5 years ago, so I had to rewatch S1 before starting the movie.

Overall, it was a lot different than I was expecting. It wasn't bad. In terms of movie quality, it was a great production. The Prushka storyline didn't really resonate with me as Mitty's did in S1, but it was still tragic/gut-wrenching. I wish Bondrewd's character was explained a tad more, but I guess it's alright considering they won in the end. I'm curious about Reg's 'shadow' form though. I wonder how that will be explained later on.

Looking forward to S2 and the journey following the last dive in a few days!

They might have been able to flesh out Prushka more like they did for Mitty if it were a series...

Season 2 has already been announced bois only issue is lack of source material but a new volume should be coming out in summer of 2021 so we should expect it around summer of 2022 if I had to guess

I liked the movie, but to be honest, I liked the TV series which I just finished a couple of hours ago more. The movie wasn't bad in any sense of the word, but for some reason, I feel like I liked the TV series more. The animation was definitely better in the movie, especially the fight between Reg and Bondrewd. But for some unknown reason, I liked the TV series more.
Anyway, time to begin watching season 2.
Graduated High School in May of 2022. Summer vacation has finally arrived. I have once again regained the power of a new anime fan, being able to watch multiple anime episodes in a day. Time to binge-watch every single anime I can into the night until college arrives. SADGE. SUPER SADGE... College has begun as of Monday, August 30, 2022, so you won't be seeing me much around these parks. See you on weekends, I guess... School me is back. Sigh! I'll at least try for one anime a day with all this course load.

What makes Bondrewd a respectable and formidable character and villain is that he's first and foremost, understandable. He's a knowledge-seeker aiming to transcend the limits of humanity. He considers the constraints of the species and present level of civilization, science, innovation, development, exploration, and novel discovery as a drag and wholly inadequate and unacceptable.

What's intriguing to me is that one of my favorite seiyuu, Toshiyuki Morikawa, who voices Bondrewd, seems to have a honed penchant for playing this type of role with a very specific motivating factor, like Griffith (in Kenpuu Denki Berserk) and Naraku (in Inuyasha). All view their innate humanity in one way or another as a shackle to be broken and freed from.

Bondrewd is just intellectual curiosity personified. As always, level of sympathy and personal identification with will come down to the audience members, which can't be expected to be a monolith. Character traits and motives are not pulled from the ether, but a reflection of real ideas and attitudes within humanity that will undoubtedly resonate with a subset of people.

It seems that you do not understand the essence of made in abyss, the culture around the abyss and the morals of its people, they do not have the morals that we share, for them death and despair are not as bad as for us.

Had to watch this cause it's a direct prequel to season 2... LOL

I didn't watch movie 1 and 2 tho... so I guess I am missing some info... (mainly about the evil antagonists that all I remember is a flashback of Nanachi at the end of season 1)

___ ___ ___

Also... that poor fish right at the beginning... literally had it's head ripped open from it's eye while still alive and then massaged into blobs to be eaten... (which at the end of movie, I realized it's a symbolism for Prushka being ripped open...)

Prushka seems to be quite "endowed" for a little girl that's the same size/ age as Riko...

___ ___ ___

Also... Poor Regu, strapped to a chair and even had his pee-pee succ'd by a tube...

And... yup... more gore just like in season 1... this series doesn't shit around huh...

More than adventure series, it feels like this should be rebranded as a horror series...

Can't wait to see more horror in season 2. LOL, gore so funny... hahaha... haha... ha...

___ ___ ___

Interesting fight between Reg and Bondrewd tho. If only Bondrewd wasn't pure evil... he would probably be able to find a way to let ppls go deeper into the abyss without sacrificing others.

Also, apparently Prushka was suppose to have already died due to the curse, but Bondrewd saved and raised her like a real daughter... I wonder who's the real father/ mother...) (what's real sad here is... they just had to show us all her past daily life of happiness after showing us of her being turn into a Cartridges... and afterwards showing us that she wanted to go on a adventure as a family...

And what's even more interesting is... apparently Bondrewd even praise and gives Nanachi his blessings to go ahead and continue moving on like an actual father before he "dies".... It's like the author wants us to hate Bondrewd while showing us some good parts of him so we couldn't fully hate him...

And finally... it ends with Prushka turning into a whistle... and the gang diving into a capsule and down into the 6th layer. All the while somehow being "watched over" by Bondrewd to make sure they "safely" dives down...

what did I just watch that was fucking disgusting. the only reason why I like watching this anime is because Nanachi is awesome. Actually the 3 of them are awesome friends who go through the most cruelsome things together... really, what the hell. Also the worldbuilding is amazing

I just feel terrible for Prushka... I kind of want a spin off with her in a different or similar setting being able to go an adventure just as she pictured it in her mind.

I have no clue how to rate this movie. On one hand I could give it a 9, while another part of me wants go give it a 1 for being just absolute disgusting

he isn't human anymore. bondrewd's relic allows for him to transfer his consciousness to other beings but at the same time it would caount him as not being human and given the fact that the white whistle only applies to the original owner body and mind alike, it makes it impossible for bondrewd to enter the next layer

Holy guacamole that was intense. This series keeps getting darker and darker and I never think it will but that's just silly of me what am I thinking xD

The action and battles were really well done! I wonder what Reg was talking about, with him feeling like there were multiple people inside of him, and how one of those people told him how to use his body properly, and who that person with the long grey hair he invisioned was...

I had a feeling Prushka would be the white whistle when it was revealed that she was turned into one of those boxes and she said she was gonna go on a journey with everyone. I feel bad that I doubted her in the beginning. Really crazy how you need someone's life to make one. I wonder who Riko's mom used O.o

Bondrewd relaly made himself into a bunch of horcruxes, so I guess they're not done with him yet unfortunately :/ if only they made it to that giant butt-thingy (the “Zohalic” or something?) and destroyed it before he reincarnated

I wish we got some sneak peek into the 6th layer but I'll have to watch the sequel tv show for that. Good think it's airing now lol!

Another 9-10/10 from this series for me!

great film. Awesome atmosphere and character development. I fall in love with the characters more and more each soon. The Bondrewd character was so cool to me even tho he's extremely fucked up. However, I enjoy how disturbing the show and its movies can get.

The main thing I hate about this series though: the amount of sexualization that involves the children. There are levels to this of course, but indirect innuendos that suggest sexually charged feelings between the children are weird honestly. It's like completely unnecessary. However, I'm willing to make peace with that to appreciate the series. Just don't understand why it has to be there?

In manga i had very little clue what was going on in that scene.

Fantastically done, it had some very fluid animation and the gore wasn't censored at all, there's one really damn cool rotation shot during it that stuck with me among many other really great bits of animation during the movie.

God, that was a whole new level of disturbing right here! Prushka using her last few moments to see off her body parts and Reg's experimentation left me in shock, honestly. Bondrewd's twisted perspectives about parenthood and love are sickening but there's no doubt that, as a villain, he's top-notch. Genuinely cares about his subjects but then doesn't show remorse when it's time to go mad scientist mode, that's legit scary. Damn, their introduction at the start of the movie though! No wonder why Ouzen warned them about him.

It's super annoying that Reg and co. couldn't take him down for good, though. I doubt the events from the movie will dissuade him from continuing his inhumane experiments. Maybe taking out the zoaholic could've had more of an impact but I wonder if Prushka's wish was the reason Riko didn't as for it.

Reg's dark side, the mystery behind his existence thickens..

As this was a movie format, obvious improvements to be expected include Art/Animation and Sound Department. And I can say for sure that the wonderful folks over at Kinema Citrus delivered on that! Kevin Penkin obviously deserves a shoutout as well, the vocal ost in the end during Reg v Bondrewd was amazing in particular!

A couple of things that irked me in the movie though were how the pacing and progression of certain scenes felt at times and the fact that Riko received a White Whistle in the manner that she did. It felt like it was more or less offered to her. Despite all the character growth, I don't think she's still quite mature enough to be among the best in the business here.

Oh well, still an 8/10 in my mind. This is not a pleasant series, that's for sure!

Well, this movie works as a direct sequel for the anime, and it covers the adventure of the 5th layer and their encounter with Bondrewd. It was really good, it has the same atmosphere of danger and fascination during the their descent. Their encounter with the first Umbra Hand was scaring, they have been following them all along and works as an introduction. Their arrival to the headquarters was full of mystery and the existence of Prushka was amazing and sad. I’m fascinated with the abyss, in this movie I think it turned out to be more of action than adventure, but I hope that the discovering will continue to be the main focus. Prushka completely loving her father but sacrificing herself to become Riko’s white whistle was surprising. This movie is a must watch if you are following this series, next season is going to continue in the beginning of the 6th layer. Completely relevant.

Weird pacing. Why did they put the 10 minute growing up power of friendship montage in the middle of the final battle? I think this anime is just OK. The animation/scenery is nice but the characters fall flat a little aside from Bunny Girl and Bonedrew. I gave it a 6/10.

The top reviewer for this anime on the page is a dingus for sure.

Animation was on point, Bondrewd was an incredible antagonist. Watching Reg use the curse of the abyss as a weapon dragging his ass up hundreds of feet, transforming him was an absolutely golden moment. Top tier

Solid 10. Lots of good... extra scenes as well, thanks to the mangaka's disposition.

It's a great movie held back by a heavily foreshadowed ending. I won't say anything to spoil it for people who haven't seen it but there are certain things that become strong hints to what happens later in anime and this movie checks every single mark to foreshadow it's eventual conclusion. Also I'm getting more and more sick of this series and the way it loves to come up with an excuse to have a kid get naked, even if we don't see their private areas it's just.... Some lines you only get to cross once, some lines you shouldn't get to cross at all.

Putting those negatives aside, this movie has a lot to offer that would surprise anyone that came into it because of it's art style. You're up for one hell of a ride with this very satisfying movie. Not on my top 10 list, but it's worth a rewatch.

DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE BECAUSE OF THE ART DESIGN! Only watch this movie if you're ready for something that's not an easily digestible product but makes up for that in it's story-telling and wonderful characters. While I do criticize it for the easy to predict ending and saying it's not easily digestible, I say that for everyone who may just want to jump on before watching what comes after. Everything leading up to the ending is some top notch stuff.

I apoligize for repeating this once more but I had a friend watch this movie for the art design and they hated it because of the dark themes in the movie. So here I repeat for the final time DO NOT WATCH FOR THE ART DESIGN!

That ending really just left a bitter aftertaste in my mouth with how easily and almost seemed happily the main cast most especially Nanachi just accepted Bondrewd's still alive after all and they've apparently come to an understanding with each other. I know MIA is not easily digestible and I'm fine with that but even if it's not for his victims' sake but for Nanachi herself, the way she just readily accepted that maybe this guy's just built like that and there's nothing she can do about it anymore just doesn't sit right with me. This is the same guy she's been wanting dead for most of her life, caused a lot of her misery and forced her to do all the horrible shit she's been experimenting on mind you. I know Nanachi's an eccentric girl who's a lot more open-minded to things but the last 10 or so minutes really just ruined it for me. Rest of the cast not minding or questioning it either just so the story could finally advance. Doesn't really help that Bondrewd threads on reddit look like a congregation of mental asylum escapees.

Also Prushka is very much an obvious recreation of the Mitty situation except it looks forced af this time cause they don't have the same chemistry Nanachi had with Mitty. Like yeah poor girl led a shitty life and met a shitty end but it doesn't hit as hard as Mitty does cause she barely shares anything meaningful with Riko anyway. She' really just there to feel sorry for.

Worldbuilding isn't that present as the previous season cause they're pretty much stuck in the same place with the same antagonist anyway which is fine and all. A change of pace is very much welcomed to me so I don't fault them for that.

What an incredibly SHITTY move to leave the guy torturing children alive!!! I would have given it 9/10 but that really pissed me off.

Oya oya oya... Subarashii....

Damn Bondrewd's done some incredibly horrible things but they did a great job of making him charming in the midst of it. Really helps you relate to Nanachi's turmoil over ever having gone along with his horrible experiments. Poor Reg in the first part... and every one of his victims... but it's cool that Riko got a White Whistle out of all this...

This movie maintained all the strengths of the first 2 movies/ first season and cut really, really deeply.

World building, adding background to existing and new characters, a compact yet flashed out story line and great motives. I really loved this movie and once the credits dropped depicting their last dive, I was convinced this is a piece of art extraordinaire. Of the many memorable moments Reg's transformation and Prushkas's offering really hit the hardest...

Bondrewd made this movie and acted like a final test before their final farewell from everything they are familiar with. I still do not know how to feel about him. The most comparable character I know is Bleach's Kurotsuchi Mayuri and Aizen but the scary thing about is he lacks any negative emotion or ill wishes. Seeing him seek progress and sow misery wherever he goes makes me think of Hanna Arendt's concept of the 'banality of evil': The deeds were monstrous, but the doer – at least the very effective one now on trial – was quite ordinary, commonplace, and neither demonic nor monstrous.

Not that Bondrewd himself is ordinary but his pursuits are absolute and ethics secondary. I wouldn't be surprised if his character was already the same way when he was a red whistle.
