This show has some strange vibes to it. I’m curious about how it will go. MC seems to be a little perverted lol.

Rewatching this just because I needed something light and quick to rewatch that I haven't seen in a while and worth my time having a more concrete opinion on now in 2021, and this show fit the bill.

First episode was decent. Sure, it has a lot of the annoying light novel troupes that's plagued with these school-related light novels, but if there's one good thing going for it, its that Sakuta is quite a charming little main character with the digs and humor, and shares great chemistry with Mai who is the perfect counterpart for someone like him. The mystery elements seem interesting too, albeit nowhere close to complex and fascinating as some other mystery LNs out there from more polished authors.

Seems like i'm late to the party but... better late than never i guess lol
Intersting start. I like the main lead and the mystery the episode sets up. The comedy's quite good too

Abou the little sister: i'm not the biggest fan of the imouto trope in anime. Hope it remains a normal singlings relationship.

Interesting start.. Some of the wording came across as odd (at least in the sub translation) but I think the MC is engaging enough

Decided to start to this show after people saying that it's similar to Bakemonogatari. The way Sakuta introduced his name, was definitely just like how it is Monogatari, by giving the meaning of his name. And that mild incest moment is Monogatari as well:).

I like Sakuta already, he's a savage XD
I cracked up at the period part with Yuuma.
16:10 this scene was also hilarious. Was he looking up pron of Mai? lmao

So Mai and Sakuta are suffering from a so-called "Adolescence syndrome". And other people can't see Mai. In fact, they are starting to forget that she even existed in the first place. I'm also interested to know what happened in the "Hospitalization incident" that he's being blamed for.

Since mc gave the bun to mai, would it seem like floating in air? So far it seems just another mediocre suzimiya haruhi.
Jim_White said:
So the MC already has a girl he likes but he's CLEARLY attracted to and trying to hit on Mai (not just talking about episode 1). Imagine if the roles were reversed, all the virgin-hunting NTR-crying hypocrites would be wailing like it's the end of the world. Of course, the guy she's "cheating" on has to be the MC cuz these people are self-centered hypocrites like that, it's all about the one they identify with.

Anime community is what stops me to admit I'm one of them. Some comments would literally creep me out.

Post this in 90% (or more) anime threads and you'd still be not wrong XD.

Nice first episode, I like the relationship between Mai and Sakuta. Also poor Kaede, this whole syndrome thing is kind of confusing, how can someone not see you at all.
Come on man, where is that Noragami season 3 masterpiece. We want it, Bones!

ngl seeing that title in 2018, thinking ah it was probably another trashy fanservice Anime.

but here i am 4 years later in 2022, after hearing good things from the Community.
Finally i'm starting this Anime, i was wrong.
The mystery aspect is really intriguing me.

this is Kaito Ishikawa and Asami Seto before they meet again in Shield Hero.

omg the ED song, i heard this so many times before didn't know it was from Bunny Girl Senpai.
Definitely ED > OP

I thought this would be like Kaichou wa Maid-sama. I never imagined it would have a supernatural element to it.

This show kinda gives me Fight Club (1999) or one of these memory-loss-anime vibes - like Golden Time, 3D Girlfriend type of vibes.

I didn't understand why he suddenly hysterically rushed back to his apartment, but the moment she was waiting for him there, that's when I realized this show is gonna be an emotional bumpy ride haha...

It is very 2000s-era-anime-esque - all this underlying trauma that is gonna be dug up. Kind of like Kanon or Clannad.

This was quite an Intriguing set up
rather than talk about the Pitcher shooting for home, let's just talk about
"So you like bunny Girls?"
"No"
"So you love them?"
"Absolutely"
Which made me wheeze

Really enjoyed the premise of this first episode. Very laid-back and a lot of interesting dialogue.

I am not by the way a novel reader so as of right now I have a lot of questions, but I’ll let the show answer them. Great start!

See, we may not agree about bunny girls(I'm not into rabbits, least of all Schrödinger's rabbit) but THIS we absolutely share.

The start implies even Sakuta forgets about Mai eventually but good thing he had a diary, right? Right? Well, right.

over 5 years later and im finally watching this, hearing the opening/ending in the show felt surreal. male lead is insufferable and im very indifferent about mai as of right now. i dont really understand whats going on either, the supernatural aspect. i guess ill see later on. the main guys sister is also odd his entire family is probably odd, theres always undertones of incest in everything unfortunately. maybe itll get better

In the early episodes of an anime, a good setup is required the type of setup that is required is contextually based on it's genre in my opinion but a good setup is required nonetheless. Rascal Does Not dream of Bunny girl senpai's setup is a mystery! where the introductory cast are afflicted by some mysterious phenomenon? it reels you in with the borderline supernatural mystery and chemistry between it's characters.

Subreddit r/SeishunButaYarou organized a re-watch of the first season and the movies in preparation for the airing of the second season. I ended up writing a long review of the episode, so I'm reposting it here in case reddit dies or decides to nukes my account for some random reason.

I haven't paid too much attention to it on my other (re)watches: Kunimi's girlfriend wanting Sakuta not to talk to Kunimi is basically her enforcing the "flow" of nobody talking to Sakuta. It makes the parallel between Sakuta and Mai-san much more obvious now that I realized that.
The conversation between Sakuta and Mai-san in the train highlights the fact, that in Japan people tend not to own PCs or laptops. For most people, their phone is the only access point to the internet.
In today's loneliness epidemic, Sakuta having two friends is a great accomplishment.
It's funny how calm Sakuta is when Mai-san starts yelling in his apartment and calling him an exhibitionist :-D
It's very touching how Sakuta buys the second cream bun without prompting, expecting to meet Mai-san. This little detail immediately shows how affectionate and caring Sakuta is.

Seto Asami's performance as Mai-san easily puts her in my favorite seyus. For example, the particular way Mai-san says "sumimasen" stands out to me, and I keep rewatching the scenes with this line over and over.
I like to recognize seyus I already know in other animes, and Seto Asami's range makes it really hard. For example, her voice as Ayase Chihaya (from Chihayafuru) is completely different to Sakurajima Mai.
Range of Tanezaki Atsumi (who voices Futaba) is also incredibly impressive. I've seen more anime with her, and can recognize her voice sometimes. The easiest way to recognize is when her character screams, because it's harder to change your voice when loud.
Nowadays I know which subs are good, but some fansubs of Seishun Buta Yarou, which I've encountered before, completely ruin the conversation between Mai-san and Sakuta about which names and honorifics to use. With over 15 years of watching anime I know enough about Japanese name usage customs to understand what's going on, but it makes me wonder how newbies discover the differences between -san -kun -senpai -sama -chan etc. ^_^

(Note: This is my second time watching this anime.)

Oh my God! I still remember the day I watched this episode a year or more ago! I was like, “Waaah, what is this awful anime?” The dialogues were flowery and mysterious—I didn’t understand anything! I even started doubting my own ability to comprehend things… I was completely lost and kept asking myself why I was even watching this anime.

But now… hahaha, what can I say other than: this anime is a masterpiece! I don’t know how my love for it grew even more after I had already dropped it… I mean, I finished the anime and even rated it 7/10, criticized it, and told many of my friends not to watch it because it was bad.

But every time I saw a scene pop up on Instagram or anywhere else, I started to understand the events little by little. I'd be like “Whoa, when did that happen?” And eventually, I decided to rewatch it for the sake of understanding, and then it just clicked! Suddenly, everything made sense all at once.

I rated it 10/10 without hesitation! And when they finally announced a second season, I knew I had to rewatch the anime I didn’t understand at first.

It’s a masterpiece! 10/10—amazing dialogues, and this episode was incredible. I don’t even understand how I didn’t like it back then…

Sakata is such an amazing character! Especially when he replied to that girl I didn’t even remember existed.

Fun fact: If you ever see me writing a super long comment, just know that I’m at peak happiness and want to write even more—but I feel like if I do, I’ll turn into Shakespeare instead of someone just reviewing an anime episode.

Let’s move on to episode two. See you in the comments for episode 2!
