| The thing is, Death Note acknowledges it's cheesy as hell, to the point where it jokes with it. The famous potato eating scene is an example of this. But it doesn't make it any less entertaining, the opposite. Death Note is a typical example of a story that only works in animated form. The live-action makes it all look way too cheesy, that's the effect real actors have. But because it's anime, it's more approachable. Back when I read the manga like 5 years ago, I actually liked the manga throughout, and never noticed a real quality drop. When I got into anime I decided to "re-read" Death Note by watching the anime though, and I could then see what people meant with the last third being really bad in comparison, although never to the extent some people claim it to be. I can't say if it was the adaptation's fault or me being more mature and critical. |

There's not enough base material for the characters to see enough development. I was vastly surprised on how quick the pacing was in the beginning episodes and certainly didn't expect that he would already have the possession of DN in the first episode. Rushed start, gets better progressively until ep 12 and then becomes average as fuck. You don't necessarily need base material to give a character development.The start was great, it was captivating right from the first min, being slightly rushed doesn't mean that it's bad either. Also, Fuck MAL lags. I had to rewrite this because of the dumb lags. |

That "change" you're talking about is very weak. We know almost nothing about Light pre-Death Note. You're going to the land of theorycrafting ("he must have admired his father"). Well I'm sorry but if the anime doesn't show it or drop a hint that the only possible deduction is exactly what it is, then it's not a well written element. Maybe Light started to hate everyone because of intergalactic aliens who were disguised as murderers killing people?
