Honestly, I'd rather think that the only relationship this anime has to Shakespeare is that Mahiro and Yoshino spout lines from his work just cause they like him and find those words cool, nothing more.

One of Shakespare's works is "The Tempest" where a mage is trapped on a desert island.
So don't say that it doesn't have much relationship with Shakespare

which is making me very interested in how this will play out, its obviously a tragedy so im fully expecting mahiro to end up being the bad guy in the end, im hoping this happens cause that sounds incredibly interesting

Even if it turns out that way I can never think of him as a bad guy. Mostly because of what happened to his sister. I am quite sure that if someone killed my sister and never got caught I'd probably lose it and do whatever I can to find him and destroy him in the most painful way. And no this is not a joke. There are some people that are sacred to me and if anything happens to them it would be the end of the one who harmed them.

while i do agree and would probably do the same things if someone murdered any of my family, its still wrong, when we are put into that rage we throw away rational thinking and even ebing able to decide whats right and wrong anymore, for example and i swear to god this is a true story(keep in mind i live in baltimore so were in a crime ridden shithole if that adds any credibility to this) also i am only passing this story down from my cousin who knew the person im about to talk about, i thankfully never met the guy.

about 5 or 6 years ago, this one guy's brother was jumpped by a group of kids who tried to beat him to death in order to steal his stuff, they thought they killed him but unknowingly only left him in a coma, now the older brother wasnt to happy about this of course, and also he just so happened to own a close range shotgun, so what ensued was the older brother busting down one of the kids that jumped his younger brother front doors, shooting the mother, shooting a sibling, and them killing the kid. Only the kid died and the older brother that did the shooting turned himself in immediately.

you can call me out for shit but i swear on my grandmother's grave that this is true, also sorry if its a bit confusing as its hard to tell a story when you dont know the names of the people. anyhow if you believe me this just shows how going for revenge ends up making you the villain in the end, im almost positive mahiro is going to end up like this.

This seems like a fairly good anime!Going to keep watching it :3
A bit confused by the ending tho, so his girlfriend is actually Aika, and Mahiro thinks Aika was murdered, and is doing all this to find her murderer?

Also, best fight scene ever.

Not necessarily.

BONES, once more you've not disappointing me! The moment I found this manga being made by BONES, I decided to read it and was completely captivated by it. I do find some problems with the anime adaptions when compared to the manga. They did great, I can say this might be one of the greatest 1st episodes I've seen, but when reading the manga, I imagined their appearances somewhat different. i imagined Mahiro to be a brighter blond, while Aiki was also being a similar blonde. While for Hakaze being a black haired girl. Though, I can't say it actually BAD, rather its AMAZING! I think even with my slight preference of color being upset, I think its well-done. Still, I wish they had explained some of the other concepts a bit more, thus making it's first episode a double, but that means they may have not done it so great. They did the 1st fight of the show good, they really needed it to be GREAT, due to the lack of physical battles in this series. I hope BONES will never disappoint me, they shall continue making great animes, and make me proud that they are making Zetsuden No Tempest's adaption!

That's what I thought about the music when I was watching this episode. I'm all for classical OST, but it felt like like it didn't fit very well (to me at least). Most of the time, I thought a silence would have been better for a dramatic effect. And that mini fight scene, the music for that wasn't the best choice either.

Art and animation wise I thought it was good, and I'm fairly interested in the plot. The characters, however don't strike me as anything special.

I disliked the manga, but it seems like the anime would be better. I have no idea how much romance will be in the anime, but I hope for more bada** magic stuff, butterflies and epic scenes as the iron-fying people and the dead sister/lover.

I am also loooooving Mahiro's insanity! Great style of fighting and the eyes... grrrr - so crazy in the close-ups when he smacked her head.

Another good surprise for me.

I don't like the character design. Especially Mahiro. Doesn't seem like a main character.

The BGM is good, and especially the ED (OP?) sung by nothing's carved in stone. Second time used in anime I guess, this band. Another is in Kingdom. Pride.

oh, and the plot. It's...okay. I like the black iron syndrome. But it has the feeling of Guilty Crown, which I don't like.

PFFFFFF it seems a horrific teenager show for the moment (horrific for me, i'm not in my teens). They are including some manservice too, so they want fangirls, they'll spill some hollow sentences like" time is out of joint o cursed spite..." or this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGSrjojDWRM&feature=player_detailpage#t=172s. They are doing it well to sell for the moment, no more. Ill watch one episodes more and if it is going on in that way ill drop it. Not trolling, is my opinion about this first episode, generic show pointing to teenager fans, trying to be deep but being totally frivolous.
......what in the holy fuck are you talking about?

those lines are from Shakespeare, mahiro is supposed to represent hamlet and yoshino is supposed to represent romeo
Someone else already said it, but out of context that line's meaning is lost...

It's precisely with that line that Hamlet curses his fate. The task imposed to him by his father's ghost, to avenge his death at the hands of his brother, to restore the usurped throne. It's not his will, it's a responsibility thrown onto him.

Mahiro on the other hand seeks revenge on his own. To "save the world" and stop the "bad" guy is not even his duty, it's the wish of the stranded princess. Instead, helping her is a trade for the ability to get revenge on his sister's murderer, which for all he knows, might not even be related to the world of magic. Furthermore, he seems to find the opportunity exciting, rather than dreadful. He is definitely not cursing his fate.

TL;DR: The similitude between Hamlet's and Mahiro's situation is shallow at best, which is why that sentence is light and hollow in this context, the way I understand it anyway.

Honestly, I'd rather think that the only relationship this anime has to Shakespeare is that Mahiro and Yoshino spout lines from his work just cause they like him and find those words cool, nothing more.

I would also add that Mahiro is very unlike Hamlet in personlity. He seem more hotheaded and impetuous in his actions. More like Laertes from "Hamlet" or Romeo.

Yoshino's cunning could make him like Hamlet. Certainly he is melancholic like the Danish prince. Although one could argue he could be more like Iago from "Othello" or Cassius from "Julius Caeser" if he is more villainous than he seems.

Hakase seems like Miranda from the Tempest or could be filling in the role of Hamlet Sr.'s ghost.

Nice visiuals and plot presentation so far.

Hakaze seems like an interesting character, and Mahiro is just pure badass! I love the two of them already!
Aika pretty much played the role of the bitchy girl in this episode, so I don't really know what to think of her yet. But from the picture on Yoshino's phone, it almost looked like she was his girlfriend? But she's dead... huh.
Also, Yoshino seems pretty boring and transparent if you ask me, but almost every anime male protagonist seem to be like that nowadays.

That being said, the fight scene was AWESOME! Loved the way Mahiro utilized his powers. Definitely hoping to see a lot more of those!

Wow this anime looks great, the art looks beautiful and the animation seems pretty smooth. Both male leads are cool and Hakaze looks like she's got a great fun personality. I am loving how this plot feels as well, and oh damn there are already some twists in the first episode. Didn't see Aika being Yoshino's girlfriend coming at all, and this make their past even more interesting and sad. Makes me think that Yoshino is just holding his emotions back even though he cares about Aika just as much as Mahiro. Dno why I didn't make some time to start this series sooner because this is really nice so far.

Hmmm... To be honest, I pick anime completely randomly. Sometimes they have a cool picture, cool clips, recommended by someone, hear good things about it, or just blah. Sometimes I just don't know what I am watching but I am happy if it is anime. I have no idea how his anime ended up on my "Plan to Watch" list, but I am really glad that it did. (This will go on my WhyTF isn't anyone talking about it, underrated list) Not to bash SAO, which I do like, but this first episode of Tempest showed me more in a single episode than the first 13 episodes of SAO. I haven't been this drawn in and engrossed and hyped BY THE FIRST EPISODE of anything in YEARS. Although seeing that very familiar logo at the end of the episode made me realize just why I had that strong of a reaction... BONES. They are by far my favorite studio. They just know how to make good anime and I can't wait to catch up with everything. I really really really hope that they can keep everything going the way this first episode started!
