Going to be a long list... but I suppose that is better than shorter??

http://myanimelist.net/anime/4725/Ga-Rei:_Zero <-- brutal but oh so good
http://myanimelist.net/anime/1827/Seirei_no_Moribito <-- great, realistic female protagonist
http://myanimelist.net/anime/8086/Densetsu_no_Yuusha_no_Densetsu <-- definitely not wimpy when he gets serious
http://myanimelist.net/anime/44/Rurouni_Kenshin:_Meiji_Kenkaku_Romantan_-_Tsuiokuhen <-- goes without saying. Not the usual Kenshin if youve seen the regular series
http://myanimelist.net/anime/5682/Phantom:_Requiem_for_the_Phantom <-- both of the main characters are great
http://myanimelist.net/anime/856/Utawarerumono <-- one of my favs
http://myanimelist.net/anime/3323/Kite_Liberator <-- again, a badass female protagonist
http://myanimelist.net/anime/1696/Murder_Princess <-- another
http://myanimelist.net/anime/14075/Zetsuen_no_Tempest <-- neither of them are wimpy
http://myanimelist.net/anime/207/Lodoss-tou_Senki <-- classic knight in shining armor themed badassedry
http://myanimelist.net/anime/11837/Zetman <-- a more recent badass
http://myanimelist.net/anime/270/Hellsing <-- of course

I'd also suggest:

http://myanimelist.net/anime/10087/Fate/Zero <-- Mages and their Servants fighting for the Holy Grail. Magic, modern setting, dark themes. (and don't forget to check the second season)
http://myanimelist.net/anime/205/Samurai_Champloo <-- Edo-period samurais and hip-hop. Great soundtrack, charming characters and well-animated fight scenes.
http://myanimelist.net/anime/272/Noir <-- Classic guns-with-guns anime. Kinda slow and with some repetitive gimmicks, but with a strong atmosphere.

Hmm, kinda hard to find something like SSY; it's a pretty unique anime. Have you tried other stuff from Fall 2012 anime, like Zetsuen no Tempest and Psycho-Pass? They are pretty good too.
Edit: ah, forget it, you've already watched both. Then, what about Wolf's Rain? It hasn't horror elements but fills the quota for fantasy and mistery (SSY is more on the sci-fi side). Wolves, apocalyptic setting and survival themes, is one of my favorites.

I'm looking for something to watch with the old school classy year 24-ish shoujo style, I haven't yet watched. I already have onisama e and andromeda stories in my radar, but aside these nothing else comes to my mind with the same art.

(for those who don't know which art I mean. It's this flowery style full of glitter expecially in the eyes, most often used for parodies in more recent titles, when it comes to appear.)

I have failed thus far to find a similarly epic anime experience, any help?
Basically what i am looking for is, EPIC SCALE, NO SUPERNATURAL-POWERS, GOOD STORY and NON-EPISODIC.
No comedy/school/slice of life moe girls.
Animes that are similar that i have already watched: Terra e, Death Note and Code Geass.</div>
Well as far as I recall Crest of the Stars and later Banner of the Stars were a bit like it.

Crest of the Stars and Banner of the Stars are great. Highly recommend.

  • Plastic Nee-san

  • Hataraku Maou-sama

Seen all of these except Binbougami ga which is not what i'm looking for. Well there is refined humor and there's banana peel stuff, so i'd say "more elaborated" is somewhere inbetween.

@muffin
I can only really think of Blood Lad that shares a similar humor, and has a supernatural theme to it. As a wild card, Claymore seems like it might fit the bill, but I haven't seen it so I can't say for sure. Someone else might be able to offer a couple more suggestions, you are watching or have seen anything else that I would suggest :P

@ashjnr
Ano Natsu de Matteru
Byousoku 5 centimeter
Kanon (2006)

A difficult one as I apparently have a heart of steel, but those are a few I have been close to crying like with clannad, Anohana actually had me laughing at the melodrama, but Ano Natsu is very similar to Ano hana. Another one which has gotten me close to crying on several occasions is Uchuu Kyoudai, but that is more out of happiness, than sadness or tragedy etc.

  • Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!- cute and funny (my forum avatar and signature are from this anime)
  • The World God Only Knows- funny and lots of different romances
  • Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun- really funny and characters are interesting
  • Toradora!- one of my personal favorites, pretty funny and I think it's the best high school romance/drama out there
  • Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo- pretty funny but can be pretty heavy on the drama at times, still very good though
  • Clannad- pretty funny and may make you cry, though its sequel, After Story will almost definitely make you cry, made by Key, the people who made Little Busters!
  • Steins;Gate- pretty funny but gets super-serious at one point, definitely worth the watch, it's also one of my personal favorites as well
  • Angel Beats!- also made by Key, very funny, also pretty sad, the music is great, and another one of my personal favorites.

EDIT: Actually, I don't really think Steins;Gate really would count as a romcom but nevertheless, I feel it's very good and definitely worth the watch. :)

I'm going to start you off with these:
  • Working!!- made by the same person who made Servant x Service and there's two seasons
  • Acchi Kocchi- there's a romance and Tsumiki is adorable
  • Nichijou- No romance but just jam-packed with awesome random comedy

So, I'm going just list off the ones that fulfill the latter part:
  • Tiger & Bunny- pretty funny, pretty cool, and pretty unique superhero anime
  • Oda Nobuna no Yabou- main dude somehow gets sent to the Sengoku (Warring States) period of Japanese history and most of the big players are actually girls, pretty funny and you may learn something about Japanese history if you pay attention
  • Maoyuu Maou Yuusha- what I refer to as "moeblob economics" lol, despite the fact that most people hate the character designs in the anime, I thought it was pretty good and pretty funny, I definitely learned something and it had one of the best speeches I've ever heard (at least in anime).
  • Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (2012)- if you like hype action and comedy, then this anime is a must-watch, the series itself is extremely popular in Japan and there's a new season green-lit.
  • You may also want to check out some shounen shows like Toaru Majutsu no Index and Fairy Tail to see if that matches what you'd like as well.

I have the slight feeling, there will probably be almost nothing responding to my query again, but, I'll try anyways...

I am looking for something with "serious comedy".

In case anybody read Bakuman and the part before they got their idea of the PCP series, it's explained there most eloquently along with a very good example, when they go and spy on Aiko's meeting with Hattori.

In very short: Somebody is in a serious conflict, while it's absolutely (and understandably) serious for the characters, with some serious context to it at that, it's hilarious to the watcher.

I just finished Shingeki no Kyojin, it fit into that query pretty well on several occasions so I felt like watching more that has this sort of "serious comedy".
Is there anything, I haven't yet watched?

In all honesty, that sounds pretty convoluted and the fact that I'm not familiar with Bakuman doesn't help at all either lol. The one anime that comes to mind would be Watamote and that's already on your plan to watch list. What you're describing kinda reminds me of situational and/or dramatic irony...

uuum. Watamote has comedy in its tags, so I'm not so sure, it's responding to that...

To elaborate more on what I mean, in bakuman the two protagonists (mangaka) are reading the otterman series, and think that the otterman is just absolute dead serious all the time, but the series would be still very funny. They think, comedy as of slpastick, SD, obvious jokes, parody or like any other direct jokes are like the regular comedy and that otterman is the "serious comedy". They somehow wind up stalking their manga-editior, who is meeting with the writer of another manga. She somehow fell in love with him and in all seriousness tries to please him and whatnot and the editor-man is totally overwhelmed with the situation. They are both dead serious. She wants him to like her, he wants to get out of the situation, but can't just run away and all of this is served in a understandable, not ludicrous way. In the background the two stalkers are in a serious battle with theselves to not break out in loud laughter, lest they get found out stalking those two.

Well, to pull out a different example somewhat in the direction of the type, but outside of the Anime-scope would be the movie Forrest Gump in some way I guess. In there the protagonist is also always serious all the time and that creates some funny situations. Only that he is naive and innocent (or sometimes just stupid), which is not what I am searching. (awfully stupid moe-blobs or harem idiots vevoid of brain substance came cross my eyes all too often...) So looking after serious comedy with normal characters.

In SnK it was mostly the titans theselves, while they are a dead serious threat, they just create most funny scenes but by... being how they are. Sometimes also inbetween the characters is something like that. Like when Jean falls in love with Mikasa on first sight, and sorts of more of less almost confessed to her, just to find out, she's walking away with Eren, whom he just had some quarrel with, and he has to wipe out his "faith in humanity" (and with "humanity" being mentioned more than once in all dead seriousness).

Also, not to be mistaken with "it takes itself so seriously, while being so outmost trashy, it's so unintentionally hilarious!!" They are quite similiar at times, but I am not looking for obvious trash entertainment atm.

Somewho like that. Was that less convuluted? ^^"

@Shina_luna

It's a pretty difficult request since it's hard to know what ambient thing you'd think funny from an otherwise serious anime but I guess I can try recommending some stuff:

Kingdom - You might find the cgi funny at points ^^ (since that is the only bad thing about this series you should try it out)

Gankutsuou - Dunno what would be funny about it, maybe the clothing? But it's serious and its good and its wacky so I feel it fits the description loosely. Your page was loading so I didn't see you'd seen it (even in your favorites!)

Can't think of any others that fit such a detailed description.

Thanks anyway for trying, through...

Kingdom - I tried a few episodes before, but the whole art is so... so... ugly in my eyes.... It#s not even funny anymore... (Not just the CGI, the whole Design at that.)

Gankutsuou is cool and my 2nd favorite Anime. Now that you mention it, yes, it has some "serious comedy", too on several occasions. (Through the ending borders to trash-drama-ludicrousness, but that is a diffrent issue.) but gankutsuou is a bit speacial in that, that while some of the scenes are a bit of the serious comedy type, when you think about it, but by means of even mere superb dramaturgy it totally draws you in, when watching, making you forget about the serious comedy, but be wholesomely fascinated instead. (At least for me.)
Oh, I digress. That speciality is something I haven't seen so often elsewhere and great dramaturgy is far too seldom to find anyhow, so I leave it at that, since I don't hope to find any of those, save by utter chance.
to get back to the actual problem: I already know it. And have watched it 4 times already. And the last time was just a few month ago. So i'd rather watch something else, if possible. ^^"

Kingdom - The art may be crap but the story is still really good, since I managed to get to S2 (which has way better art) I think I'll keep watching but I know the manga is really well drawn so I guess it makes more sense to recommend that than the anime.

Sorry I can't really recommend anything, my list is basically a subset of yours ^.^

My suggestion would be animeadvice.me + random.org and then you just need to get lucky

@Kingdom, the manga is much faster paced and isn't an insult to the eyes.

The Watamote rec made me lol, I can't see any "serious" humor that I can recommend, the only things I have seen that you haven't are mostly slice of life comedies and parodies :(

Did a little surfing but I am in the dark about these, so take what you will from any of them as I myself haven't seen them and have no idea what they are about, but this is what sifting through garbage found me:
Gokusen (appears more comedy than serious)
Utawarerumono
They could be awful or completely unsuited, I literally have no idea, why you have to watch so many things shina, WHY?!? (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

uuum. Watamote has comedy in its tags, so I'm not so sure, it's responding to that...
I guess you can consider Watamote funny in the same way that someone considers seeing someone being chopped up and mutilated funny lol; it's all about perspective and personal humor. Watamote is all about irony and watching a socially inept and confused teenager attempt to be not so socially inept and confused, which basically never happened. To me, it was painful to watch someone embarrass themselves for nearly 240 minutes while others found it absolutely hilarious. Oh, and the person is actually trying pretty seriously.

Watamote seems to be quite split... guess I'll take a look at it.
otherwise
@Gokusen (appears more comedy than serious)
Speaking of which, I had bought the anime box a while ago, good oppotunity to watch is at last.

@Utawarerumono
Hm. Seems to be high fantasy, I usually get into that on rather seldom occations, but I think, I look for it in the rightstuff chrimsmas sales.

Aside that, somebody asked me directly via profile comments, since I gave hime some more examples, I think, I'll post them here, too in the low chance, somebody gets some more idea. ^^"

You provide examples back in the forums though. I could relate too Shingeki no Kyojin and at that point I figured I knew what you meant. Like when Jean complimented Mikasa on her hair, but then wpied his trust on Connie after seeing Eren tell her to cut it...

I like that kind of stuff, but I don't know how to find it either. I wasn't really much help, but can you recommend a few seriously comedic shows.

Aside the one example in SnK there is also almost everything with the titams. There had been a lot of memes floating around, like moe-titan and the jesus titan or something like that. I guess finding via such memes could be more resourceful (but these include trash humour), but I don't follow those places...

If I were to recommend some, there is always Gintama. Gintama has everything, also serious comedy, albeit a bit rarer. Same goes for horizon in the middle of nowhere.
Gankutsuou as mentiones in the thread has some, too.
There is also Sword art online, which has some some little occasions on it.
Reborn has some of it too, but most of it goes in to the trash department.
Oh and of course bakuman. Beck has some as does GTO (the interquel manga more) on little occasions, when it's not so blatantly comedy. The Big o, also has some serious comedy (the sarcasm there with the straight serious face is really tasty).
one piece has on occasions something like this too. Like in the fisherman arc, the perverted one gets nosebleed from the marmaids (obvious comedy), but since he is so serious, he is on the best way to die by blood loss (bridging it to be serious comedy) and subsequentially donating blood goes to be a very important and serious topic.
And well, there is prince of tennis. But there I am never sure, just when they are self parodying or taking themselves so seriously it''s ludicrous. But it stay pretty uniquely hilarious. Yakutate Japan (Manga more) starts off similiarity, but goes to be totally boringly absurd.

+ I forgot about Ga-rei-Zero's choice of weaponary. Through that borders to trash...

well, perhaps, if I also make some deviant to it, there is more? Like Comedy that becomes a serious plot device, like in the one piece example. it's a running gag, but on that spot used to the extreme exageration, making it more funny while being a very important device to pull out the seriousness that the title has to offer. (by all drawbacks the fisherman arc may have had, I though this joke being really well crafted.)

An anime similar to Sword Art Online? or maybe an anime that gives you the same feeling as watching SAO? I've watched a couple of similar animes, do you guys have more? :(

I suggest both .hack and Bootm both are centered around videogames with a much more serious underlying plot than the characters think.
