All the anime and manga that I own are all store bought or bought at a convention. That's the only way you can call yourself a "true" collector. People who download give otaku a bad name.

Well obviously if you mean physical media. If you meant true fan then that is completely wrong. You don't have to buy something in order to be a fan of it. Also, people who call themselves otaku give otaku a bad name.

I used to buy manga, dvds and soundtracks in the early years but then found out about online reading and torrents. I still buy some for collecting purposes.
but then again anime isn't only the addiction I need to feed.

Though I am a cheapskate, I have done all 4 of those things. . . . granted not many because I am poor lol but I have bought stuff (manga, merchandise, dvds) and went to legal streaming sites. . . doesn't happen often but at least I have done something to support the anime industry :)

Though I will say that manga and merchandise and even some anime is wayyy to expensive

I buy anime whenever I'm not in the mood to buy video games, which is really rare since I can just download all of the anime I want.

Note: yes I know you can download video games too, but my computer is fucking ancient.

Hopefully nothing by Viz Media.

Yeah. That's where I get my Inuyasha's from. What's wrong with them? The only company I've been told to stay away from so far for ruining anime is 4Kids. As far as I know, Viz is faithfully to the original.

I know they changed a cigarette to a chewing gum in Hikaru no Go and that sake is called "super secret potion" in Naruto at least. :p

I buy anime movies/seasons on DVD and Blu-ray if it seems interesting enough or if I saw the series and would rewatch the shit out of it.
I bought Paprika this summer and a crappy anime not so long ago.

I'd say I buy manga volumes, but the last one I bought was about a year from now.
But I have a nice start of a collection.
Which is about 15 somehting.

It makes no sense at all to license something when it has barely started airing.

I used to stream/download fansubs, until I moved to Australia and my internet got capped really low... that's when i started buying the anime dvds. I buy them from amazon.com from the US and only buy complete anime series or half-series boxsets (12-13 ep). it is my main source of anime watching and most of the stuff i buy, i have never watched before but interests me and therefore i buy.

if i come across an anime i bought which i dislike, i just sell it off on ebay or something at usually the same price which i bought the anime for.

Now however, my internet plan has changed and is capped at 75gb on/off peak. Though it is high and now can resume downloading, i can no longer watch anime i download without being distracted or not fully concentrated. That is because it's not something i paid for. whereas the anime dvds i buy, i watch to its full extent.

I do agree that subtitles on some anime dvds are not as good as some fansubber groups out there, but i can see that they are getting better.

Oh. and i do want to try to start collecting manga because i honestly cannot read off the computer screen :/ I have about 5 mangas which i bought years ago, and just might start buying again, if i have spare money after buying the dvds.

ANY person who watches anime using illegal streams (youtube, watchdub, justdubs, ect...) is a total disgrace to the Otaku Community internationally. It sickens me how people can not only upload and link to copyrighted material but also contribute to them by watching it instead of taking steps to have it removed. People like that cost the anime industry millions of dollars a year(in the US Alone). STOP DOING IT!

I didnt say all anime is illegally streamed. But a lot if not most is. Especally on Veoh and Youtube. As for manga, same thing applies. MangaFox claims to be legal and a-ok, but apon farther legal review it is infact illegal.

Goddammit my post didn't show up.

I seriously hope this is a troll post because of the Otaku comment.

If its not a troll here's a response. The anime industry does not lose millions of dollars if people pirate. For instance if somebody never intended on buying the product in the first place then there was no lost sale.

Are games/posters/figurines a good way to support the industry?

I try to support the industry, but fansubs do an infinitely better job than official subs at translating anime, and blu-ray and DVD imports are so expensive it's hard to budget (and I refuse to give my money to companies like Funimation so that they can roll out more crappy subs and dubs while being reverse imported).

I don't really like paying for something that I'm not going to use (DVDs and blu-rays that I've already downloaded with better subs and therefore will never watch).

All I've really bought so far are a few manga and OST's, but if other merchandise is a good way to support the industry, I'd certainly make a habit of buying that stuff.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to buy legit anime merchandise, how to avoid fake stuff, etc...?

Nah.

I usually don't even bother downloading nowadays. The connection at my university is such shit that its twice as easier to stream if I want to watch multiple episode consecutively. Shitsux. I usually don't buy series either because the chance of me rewatching anything is rather slim. I have bought a few music CDs at conventions though but I've been downloading more than I've bought so meh.

Play Asia has nothing but legit anime merchandise, nothing is fake and if you paid for it it will ship even if it means a delay, however if you are looking for rare figures or merchandise from anime prior to the year 2000 try Ebay or Amazon Japan. If you use Ebay do your research before you buy.

I've never bought anything anime or manga related. I've only bought one album (a Linkin Park one when I was 10) but I've rated nearly 1,500. Never bought a film. I do own a PS2, but I usually play ROMs for Nintendo online. I own a few books, but they are far outnumbered by the amount of .pdfs I own.

Everyone knows piracy is virtually indifensible if you can technically go and buy it in your town (for a reasonable price), so stop being such flailing pussies in a bumfight.

Personally I haven't bought any anime for years. Why would I when you can download it for free? The argument I hate the most is "I like owning something". Jesus talk about out-dated materialism.

But actually I suppose I would buy (or pay to download) shit if I could. I have the money now to do so, but in Japan DVDs are ridiculously expensive, not to mention unsubbed.

Incidentally, I buy manga here because I can get it second-hand for 105yen. Is there a difference between buying second-hand and downloading? Because I can't see one.

DVDs are inferior to fansubs mostly (distractingly ugly blocky yellow subs, eww dubs), Blu-Rays are hardly released/expensive (and the subs are still kinda ugly; video quality is good but not good enough to justify the money most of the time), don't like manga, can't afford good quality merchandise (& I won't settle for low quality goods just to give companies my money)

I'm cheap I guess, but I'd buy more anime if it offered me an advantage over the free option.

I have a collection of about 150 books. But many translations of series have stopped due to economical problems, so many of the series are only translated half through. And buying imported books is far too expensive. The same goes with anime. I have a few movies but they cost a lot since they are imported. And it's the same problem with merchandise and stuff.

In Japan the prizes are okay. But here everything is imported which means it is much more expensive. Which sucks... So I guess I don't support the manga and anime industry that much.
