Smart, humble and melancholic males: Like Oreki from Hyoka and Shikamaru from Naruto. Gaara and Nagato can be viewed as such too.
Short and easily provokable (but smart) males: Edward from Fullmetal Alchemist and Toshiro from Bleach.

Tomboys: Ryuunosuke from Urusei Yatsura etc.
Tsunderes: Shana from Shakugan no shana and Taiga from Toradora.
Lolis: O_e Have a problem with that?
Silent girls: Nagato from Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Urabe From Mysterious Girlfriend X and many more.

The list goes on.

Someone told me that three of the characters on my favorites list are idealistic in nature.

It's the only trend I could find among them, so I guess I like idealistic characters a bit more than the rest.

That's hard... It's easier for me to tell whom I dislike...
In general, I prefer introverted characters, but I don't entirely dislike extroverted ones, only if they're dense and hot-headed. I like the introverted, quiet, withdrawn, independent, mature, intelligent and serious characters. I don't mind if they're cold-hearted, anti-social and arrogant. But no "manipulative bastards" for me. I also like the determined, ambitious, persistent, strong-willed, reliable and loyal kind. Even more so when they're badasses. Or when they're playful but actually mysterious and/or wise. Among females, I usually like tomboys. I do like tsundere characters, but if they get all violent, I'll hate them immediately. Made a list once, too.
(There are exceptions for any case, though.)

I don't know about female characters. I like them if they aren't moe/annoying.

Male characters, I like a variety of types.

The epitome of what I like in male characters though is.. Orihara Izaya.

I'm a big fan of most tsunderes (not a huge fan of Taiga, for instance, but she's okay). I also like lolis, but most of all, the really sweet girls in anime, like Kotomi from Clannad and Elsie from TWGOK. I'm also really into the kind of snobby ojou-sama types that are secretly really shy, kind of tsundere-ish (think Ami from Toradora, Chiaki from Mouretsu Pirates, Haqua from TWGOK, and most of all, my absolute favorite, Sena from Haganai).

As for male characters, comedic value is a plus. Excalibur and Death the Kid from Soul Eater are perfect examples, not to mention Gintoki Sakata from Gintama. Other than that, just badass characters will do. Jin from Zetman, Vegeta and mostly everyone in DBZ fit this category. My absolute favorite male characters, however, are those that I think resemble me. Oreki Houtarou from Hyouka, Araragi from Bakemonogatari (kind of), Katsuragi Keima from TWGOK (again, kind of), and Kuroko from Kuroko no Basket.

"In both love and octopus-hunting, you have to take the initiative!" - Gintoki Sakata

Male: Quick thinking intelligent antiheroes or traps.

Female: Very weird girls. Reverse traps. Lewd girls who sexually harass male characters.

There are alot more types I like, but I think those are possibly my current favorites.

Male - Someone who is extremely kewl and badass, can be an anti-hero, and a magnificent bastard. Probably why I love Kiritsugu so much!

Female - Hilarious, strong-willed, relatable, not tsundere, independent, not one of those fall-in-love-with-any-guy sissies. See Mogami Kyouko for the single best shoujo lead ever.

Funny, badass and adorable characters. Basic shonen characters like Natsu and Luffy cover the first 2 with ease, which is why I love them. Death the Kid is the same, just with OCD. Saber probably covers all 3, especially in the Visual Novel where her expressions are adorable.

In terms of Slice of Life/Romance, I tend to like most of the non tsundere heroines to some extent. As for the male lead, anything other than Yuichi/Tomoya from key's productions is usually a disappointment. I like a lead to be able to tease the girls, rather than being ridiculously nice all the time.

And of course Analytical characters like Light, Lelouch and Akise.

I have two:

Intelligent and just. But not overly good, as in they'd never kill. Eg. Yang Wenli

Bad-ass, will basically rip your shit up, but not overly evil. Eg. Guts

I'm not really sure what my favorite type of character is...
I guess with girls I like the ones with humour and who are a bit crazy, not really tsundere, maybe a little.

And with boys, I think the "cool" ones that have a good personality and are anti-heroic.

As a boy, it is my pride to say my preferences for an anime girl is, I AM A SUCKER for Tsunderes, Lolis, and Reverse Traps
I also like the Quite but Moe Types, examples would be Hellscythe, or Nozomi from Mayoi Neko Overrun, don't you just love it when she says "Nyaa?"
I also like the Balanced Sweet Kind, like Milhi from Dog Days, or Charlotte from Infinite Stratos, their the ones I would most likely want to marry
The Ones I don't like are the Sadists, however, a quite sadist is fine for me. I also don't like the ones with giant huge breasts, although there is an exception for some.

For Boys, to get me to actually like them, they need to be protective of the girls, doesn't matter if they're perverted, like Tomoki, TOMOKI IS AWESOME!
The Silent and Ignorant Type is also Very Cool.
BTW, I am a Boy, I'm just saying what makes a Male Character cool in my book.

A last Note, I ABSOLUTELY HATE THE OVERLY ANNOYING NAIVE ONES!
Some might hate on me, but Madoka was very naive, I liked her, but she annoyed me like hell when she went Naive.

Conflicted characters that act with decisively when necessary, but are not boy scouts. Examples: Emiya Kirtsugu (Fate Zero), Takumi (Nana), Hei (DtB), Zwei (Phantom of the Requiem).

Oh, generally, they'll be ADULTS.

For a female character I like someone like Shurei from The Story of Saiunkoku because she isn't this clumsy person who makes up for it by being caring and compassionate. No she is someone who is brave with a goal in life and tries her hardest.

For a guy.....hmmmm.........maybe someone like Tomoya but without the troubled past. I like how he is blunt and honest, it can be funny.

I love badass male leads that get their hearts grinded by their dark pasts (Casshern from Casshern Sins).
Or type V Anti-Heroes (Sebastian or Ciel from Kuroshitsuji).

I like Tsunderes and Danderes, the Danderes must be somewhat like Rei Ayanami and it's clones (Hecate from Shakugan no Shana, Kanade from Angel Beats, Tabitha from Zero no Tsukaima).

I would love to say characters along the lines of Lelouch. You know the cold, calculating, super smart characters that just out think someone to get what they want. Yet...I seriously just love the typical over done shonen main character. Something about that kind of character just gets me pumped. Maybe thats a bit simple minded but it's what I've always enjoyed.

Aside from that, those who act reasonably (that's rare for an anime character).

No... That's the new version which was because of some time travelers.

THEY MORPHED HIM INTO SOMETHING ELSE!

You should know this, and you should have avenged him.

I am dissappointed in you, Dankickyou. Really dissappointed.
