Talk about a huge episode lol! I'll break this down into a few major discussion points I wanted to touch on. First will simply be the goodbye between Luffy and Jimbei. I felt so much respect and emotion in that scene, it got to me a little. Luffy and Jimbei were both willing to die for Ace's sake, Luffy freed Jimbei from prison and put his faith in him as Ace's friend, Jimbei helped them get to Marineford, and they both fought and nearly died. Jimbei was ready to die for Luffy but Crocodile and Law saved both of them. And after that, both had to deal with the loss of Ace and Jimbei beat Luffy's head on straight and made him look forward again.. made him the Luffy we know and love. That is a lot to go through and the respect between them is so thick you can cut it with a knife. Their send off where Jimbei expressed that he was ashamed to be alive and that he was thankful for everything, probably coming from the fact that he didn't save Ace or Whitebeard, but Luffy very maturely told him to keep his head up high was a sign of some true comradery. They both know they did their best and they are both thankful for each other, pledging to see each other in 2 years. It seems Jimbei knows another good pirate now.
Next, I just wanted to briefly touch on how Rayleigh is training Luffy. I recall he told Kizaru not to kill these kids before their time, he knows Shanks made a gamble for the future on Luffy, Rayleigh knows he helped Hachi and saw Roger in him if I recall on the line about the king being the most free. So, it makes a lot of sense that Roger's second in command has taken to helping train Luffy to take this new era, and for Luffy and Rayleigh to be the only ones on a deserted island for two years, they are going to get close. Luffy is being trained by the closest person to Roger and it's quite poetic in a sense. While he was away from his nakama he befriended Jimbei, and Hancock, two Warlords, and worked with a former- Crocodile. He also befriended a revolutionary commander and Roger's second in command and now he's being trained by him. And knowing Luffy he won't bring these up until they run into these characters and he'll be like, oh yeah I'm friends with them and Rayleigh trained me.
So, duh I need to get to the meat and the game changer of this episode. WE FINALLY UNDERSTAND HAKI. Notably haki has been one of my biggest problems with the series, but I also want to specify how when Mantra wasn't explored I was furious, "it was a writing oversight" I exclaimed! "How lazy to have this power and never expand on it." Yet, as we went forward we saw more people using haki and quickly understood what we were seeing was haki back then. Just like how Arlong's motives were spelt out hundreds of episodes later, so was Mantra's origin. And I've come to love how the story is so organic, it never forces itself to show its cards in a contrived way to make things clear, villains don't espouse their motives, powers aren't so clearly explained to the audience. It feels real and realizing this was a huge moment for me to learn to have faith in Oda, so that when something feels poorly written to assume it's going to come back in a great way later!
And haki has been in the series since the very first chapter of the manga! Then we saw it in shades with Skypiea and then we saw Sentomaru use another type. Let's write what we know. There are two latent and learnable types and one linked to the spirit, normally one can't control it but rather have it come out in their most crucial moments which now explains some of the plot armor moments. We definitely saw that with Luffy saving his friends(Kuja ladies and Bon Clay) and Ace, with Ace saving Luffy, and with Coby tapping into some haki during the war.
- Observational haki, also known as Mantra in Skypiea. The fact that every freaking villain had it back then makes me think it's actually part of the culture there even if it's not fully understood in the way Rayleigh understands it. It allows predictions of attacks and we had Eneru doing this and later the snake sisters doing so. If I recall many of the Mantra users failed when their emotions got the better of them showing it's probably hard to hold it for a long time.
- Armament haki, the act of using haki as invisible armor I think he said, which can if strong enough be used as blasts of energy such as what Sentomaru did. It also is the kind of haki that allows devil fruit users to be hurt as if they were normal people. Implying Garp was able to hurt Luffy because of this and logia users like Kizaru were able to be stopped with this kind of haki. We also saw Akainu take damage by Whitebeard and Whitebeard's men.
- Finally Conqueror's haki which is pure intimidation. The thing we saw Shanks do back in the very beginning to a sea king, we saw Luffy do to those wolves, to Duval's animal, and to the entire field of Marineford to save Ace. We had Ace do this as a child to save Luffy as it came out in an uncontrollable crucial moment. We had Rayleigh do it in the slave auction. I presume Whitebeard didn't have this because he didn't wipe out all the weak men during the war like Luffy did. It's also not trainable by normal terms instead the user will have to enhance their spirit
So now that this is all established haki should play a far smaller role as a plot device. I sincerely hope a villain can use conqueror's haki at some point because until then I'm mad that it's always used to save the day at the last second. Luffy should learn the basis of these during his training which I assume means he won't be perfect, or perhaps he will only be able to use these on a surface level after two years of training. That said, it makes me curious for the future of One Piece. What about a double Observation haki fight? Will both sides try to trick each other with tactics like ricocheting hits and trying to get the other side to break their concentration? Will it be like when Luffy outsped the snake sisters so their prediction couldn't keep up? Will Armament fights end up feeling like DBZ? We know power matchups will still be relevant but now it won't be so centered around finding out how to counter the logia types they run across as, for example, Luffy could really give up his arms to take down Magellan after leaning Armament. But, if Luffy instilled Armament haki into the wax boxing gloves that would be an incredible power counter and a way to hurt Magellan!! Well, it should be interesting, we know that. I look forward to all the craziness that will ensue.
The final We Are sequence with Luffy going on hiatus as the Straw Hat pirates captain was pretty endearing. He's making another pledge, to his lost brothers, and to his friends who he still has, to this time stay back and become truly strong enough to be free. To be free enough to protect the ones he loves this time. And when he can he's going to pick up that hat once more, seen in the opening! Woo! The way we led up to this time skip with the gradual fall of the Straw Hats was a sight to behold. |
