I think that was the whole point of the episode, to show that Frieren, despite appearing all powerful and almost godlike, does in fact have flaws and imperfections. I'm almost certain that this was done exactly for the purpose of showing that despite all the power Frieren has, it is herself that is holding her back and limiting her. And that is exactly what Serie saw in her.
@zamasz
I don't think that's the point at all. Serie and Frieren have very different perspectives on magic, and Serie doesn't want to accept Frieren's view in the same way she didn't want to accept Flamme's view. It's not that Frieren can't be a first class mage, it's that Serie doesn't want Frieren to be a first class mage while holding the view that she has. It's why she asks Frieren what her favorite spell is, to give her a chance to say something other than what she considers a useless spell.

If it was truly about showing Frieren's flaws then literally no one could be a first class mage. Afterall, how many of Serie's first class mages could imagine themselves defeating Frieren? Not even her first, first class mage felt capable enough to test Frieren himself.

If anything, this scene more depicts Serie's flaws in how she views what mages should be.

if you rewatch episode2, when frieren use flower magic, Himmel face expression show that he not first time saw flower magic. This is the little detail.
@chanchan988 There are many details like that in frieren that you will only notice when rewatching and paying attention to these small details

These two parts of the episode combine nicely because Frieren and Seria are similar, one does not understand why Fern's cane is so important to her and Seria does not understand why the magic of flowers is important to Frieren, but ultimately Frieren tries to understand it and Seria does not, this shows even more so that Seria would be Frieren if she hadn't met Himmel

Or rather, Frieren did not try to understand it, but despite the lack of understanding, she saw that it was important for Fern and did not want to force her to prove her point like Seria.

Something else I need to point out. Serie blaming Frieren for having too many passing the second test seems silly. In reality, it's Ubel that allowed more test takers to pass because she took down Sense's copy. Frieren only really took on herself along with Fern. Had Frieren not taken the test, the Frieren copy wouldn't have been there either. So Sense's clone would have been the biggest problem. Even Denken likely wouldn't have past had Ubel not been there.

I cried from beginning to end during this episode. The worst part is that I am caught up with the manga, and despite knowing everything that was about to happen, I ugly cried so much. As I've said multiple times, the anime elevates the manga from a 10 to a 12 (thanks to the music, the animation and the rythm it uses during everything). Now, about the episode itself: the first part is incredibly beautiful. Frieren notices Fern was hurt by how she treated the staff topic, so she makes a big effort to try and fix it AND also doesn't let the other mage refer to it as garbage because she kind of understands it is important to Fern. The whole part that happens in the shop, both with Denken and with Frieren, is pretty touching in different ways. We're slowly but steadily getting to know a little more about some of those mages, their ambitions, their futures and their pasts, which is great. Then, the second part, is a mix of tenderness with the double flashback about Himmel (and the fantastic payoff set with the flower magic), and also pretty hype in regards of the heights of magic that Fern might be able to reach in the future. There are also some subtle set ups in the episode that will have their payoff in the story in the future, which is also something that I appretiate a lot to witness in an animated format as a manga reader.

I expected fern to get the 1st class mage at the start of the exams arc and frieren to not get it, but outside of that I didn't expect the final test.
I was very intrigued with how they would end the show as it was only 2 episodes left, and we still had the 3rd test. I like how they took a shift from a very brutal and deadly 2nd test to this very opposite test that almost seem anti climatic. Think something really interesting happens in the last episode, but that's just a pure guess.

Its weird that first Serie is complaining about how Frieren made so many undeserving mages pass and then lets Frieren fail.... so what if Frieren decides to do the test again in 3 years, wouldnt that lead to a similar situation? why not let her pass and be done with it, or maybe should have just gave her permission to go to the northern territories in the first place without the whole exam....

Hearing frieren is unskilled (even if its just for her age) did kinda hurt me because you're pretty much just consider her extremely powerful through the whole series. But it does kind of make sense if you consider the fact she spent half her life just concealing her mana/not goin for super OP magic.

@Lockensocke well, her only reason to become a FC mage IS the north. Also to be fair I'm pretty sure she also did it for fern because I don't think anyone can stop her regardless lol.

Always like that brief period of breather between the exams. I mean we see Stark then, that in one thing, and these people who don’t quite see eye to eye usually, do seem very close in this period. Usual banters aside, good to see mama Frieren doing what she does. I mean that staff was indeed very close to Fern after all.

Though like the last time, we not getting one full episode of these people just going around and doing what they wanted. I mean the third stage was there, but Serie being the invigilator herself raised the stakes too high. Goes without saying, few results were already set in stone then…

… like Serie rejecting Frieren just because… she could, lol. Though hey, her methods of rejection aren’t always one sided, I mean she had a reason… for passing people as well. Though good to see Frieren still standing firm with her values, I mean it was obvious she would but still.

At least someone passed, and I mean why not, Fern impressed Serie of all people. Though I was thinking, we'd see that thing with the glasses dude this episode itself, but I guess that is for next time.

By the way, this is ending next week and that is one sad thing in itself:(
@Softhenic03 Serie rejected Freeren just because she was a student of Flamme. You maybe mentioned Serie reaction when Frieren said that her favourite spell is a field of flowers. The same spell as Flamme. One more mention of Flamme. Even earlier in the episode, she said that her students are her disappointment.

Maybe she should take a bit of her old staff, and make it a part of a new one somehow.

I love this show, but let us not forget just how pointless this whole competition is to become "first grade mage". If anything world should recognize Frieren and her old accreditation.

Not to mention the idea "whoever reaches bottom of the dungeon passes" and then complaining that too many passed because they bunched together and cooperated. First test was equally pointless. It was as if they are purposely making up wrong tests so as many mages can pass so that we can see this badass girl with boy's voice talk how awesome she is.

Which leads us to the pointlessness of accreditation if within few dozens or hundreds of years one can be thrown away and not recognized anymore. Especially in a world where dwarfs and elves live.

But like I said, these plot conveniences don't ruin the rest of if which is great.

Another great episode. So close to the end now. Fantastic series.

For all of Serie's power and talents, she's really petty and unwise. Unless there's a twist next episode it's absolutely nonsensical to make some a first clase mage and not her master who's proven time and time again her power No matter how unconventional she is and the precise details surrounding the matter. Serie has really dropped several notches in my estimation after this.

@Ba-Cii10 that's actually quite nice parallel you drew there which I somehow missed. In essence Seria is a failed mage because she doesn't understand how even smallest of spells can have butterfly effect on the world and cause greatest of achievements. Sure she's powerful, by one metric, but not wise despite her age. In a small way Frieren won this fight but didn't get the medal, because she tried and understood what Seria didn't.

Wasn't Fern supposed to be the youngest 3rd class mage ever ? I 'd suppose that this now makes her the youngest first class mage ever as well. Fern casually making History everywhere she goes.

I had a feeling from the start of the exam that Frieren would not make it, but that Fern would, but I certainly didn't expect Frieren's failure to be for that reason, interesting. Now we still have several pretty talented mage to see for that last exam part. Interestingly enough, if Denken gets disqualified for any reason, he may try to accompany Fern and Frieren so that he can still go to the North without being a first class mage himself.

Just need to explain to Frieren why something matters.

People realizing very, but very late in the game, that Frieren is too strong.

Frieren is just against the system. Fight the system! Even if you need it, to continue the journey.

Of those who still need to be tested, I just care about Denken.

@Zefyris Fern is the youngest ever to get the highest grade in the 3rd class exam. That does not mean she is the youngest ever to be a third class mage. She probably is the youngest first class mage but it’s never explicitly said. That being said even if someone was the youngest ever third class mage that doesn’t automatically guarantee they’d be the youngest first class as well. For example, they could be the youngest ever third class but take the first class exam 50 years later when they would no longer be the youngest.

One thing that'll never gets old is Fern's pouting face and this episode easily delivered in that regard! ^_^

Despite his earlier complaints, I'm glad that Richter was able to mend Fern's staff, which she is thankful for Frieren for going out of her way to get it fixed. It did make for a sweet moment with Fern gently adjusting Frieren's duvet as she slept, while smiling at her.

The third exam proved to be a tough one and it didn't involve any fighting this time, since it was simply a one-on-one meeting with Serie herself. Poor Kanne got failed right from the get-go, as did some of the others. Frieren failing was something that she knew was going to happen, but she was confident that Fern would. Thankfully, that did indeed happen as Fern could see the fluctuations of Serie's mana flow before rejecting her offer of becoming a student under her tutelage.

Only one more episode remains of this truly amazing series. I do hope that Serie passes at least one more person in this test, which Denken comes to my mind as someone I'd like to see pass the exam overall.

Serie is a cunt, end of the story, deny the status of First Class Mage to Frieren only out of antipathy it's pure arbitrary whim, she should evaluate power, skill and wisdom not the path a mage chosed or the favourite spell.

You know after this episode, I really dislike Serie. She fails Frieren just out of absolute pettiness. Basically her excuse amounts to "I fail you because you think I would fail you no matter what." The overall result for the exam was fairly unsatisfying, thanks to Serie.

I don't even feel I can be happy about Fern passing cause Frieren not passing is so frustrating.

@MeanEYE yes, and referring to your comment above, it seems to me that this test is deliberately "badly written" because the exam is not about performing the best (as Denken said, literally stronger magicians than him ended up on the street), looking at the nature of the Seria which she founded and shaped this entire association of magicians (or whatever it was called) it seems to me that they are all selfish assholes who want to impose their thinking on others even if it makes no sense "happiness is also a skill" xD they are ego tops who will only allow you to join the elite those they deem "worthy", inventing stupid tests like "I have an indestructible coat and you have to hit me hard enough to make me step backwards". It seems to make sense to me because the education program in my country is at a similar level, the old idiots who run it don't want to change anything and still use these ineffective teaching methods haha.

I saw a reasonable explanation of the first test, so I'll paste it:
Genau says that "luck is a skill," but what is really clear from this conversation is that Genau wants a test in which those taking the test are forced to fight among themselves and are willing to kill to win. If you're not lucky, you have to learn from those who did, and if you're successful, you have to defend yourself. The arbitrary nature of the test encourages conflict, which is its intention. He wants first-class mages to be powerful and capable of violence.

This seems to make sense, after all, I think that giving happiness as one of the most important aspects of the test is unreliable, but it is a belief that Genau imposes on others and fits into what I wrote about earlier.

I don't know if my logic makes sense, but the education system in my country really makes me believe it, since such things actually happen xD

Been waiting for this part. Serie definitely isn’t a very nice person but her failing Frieren, if even for petty reasons was pretty memorable. Even more surprising with who she actually passes. She’s a different elf with different experiences. Her state of mind and Frieren’s being so different show how much Frieren has changed. Goated series as always. One more Frieren Friday.

Relaxing again after another successful test completed. Fern confiding in Stark about a fight she had with Frieren. That staff which Fern received from Neither obviously holds a special place in Fern heart and she would naturally want to fix it instead of replacing. Frieren might be slow on the up take but she cares about those around her nonetheless. Going out of her way to find the shop in town that could repair any broken staff, which so happened to be Richter shop. Denken is right that Richter shouldn't beat himself up over failing in the second test since after another three years he will be much stronger than he is now. Richter fixing Fern broken staff was very nice to see, finding it returned to full form laying on her bed after Fern and Stark ate away her frustration with some street food. Frieren despite her cold exterior does cherish the people close to her and it shows in her actions more so than her feelings or the expression of those feelings. Serie is absolutely ruthless with how she's just cutting people down at the final test. Saying that since Frieren is so strong it helped push through lots of people who wouldn't have otherwise made it. Failing so many based off their reaction to Serie mana. Frieren wouldn't have passed no matter what since Serie doesn't much appreciate Frieren outlook on magic. Fern on the other hand easily could see the detail in Serie mana and was obviously worthy of passing the final exam becoming A first class mage. Fern stood by her master Frieren and let her hard work shine through.

Really sweet moment between Frieren and Fern. Frieren barely understands her own sentimentally so trying to understand Ferns is a bit of a mystery. Despite telling her to throw it away. Frieren tries and succeeds to get it fixed. I think this is a moment where Frieren really stands apart from other powerful MC's. If it were a trash isekai or heck even a regular isekai the MC would have just used repair magic they learned like 5 minutes ago. But Frieren can't do it all she has to go to a specialist. And just about every specialist in town tells her they can't repair it just buy a new one. But the repair magic is sticking piece by piece every shattered splinter of the staff. It takes effort to do magic. It takes imagination it takes confidence. The show properly conveys why magic is and how it works in a very plausible way.

Also love how Frieren's master's master is still a hoe. And how Frieren humblely pulled a gotcha moment with saying she'll love and want Fern.

Good episode as always. Next week will be the last hurts me and yet I feel like my time watching anime has never been more fulfilled.
