Yoko is like 20 or 21 after the time-skip.

She's over 18.

She's 500 years old.

Yeah, found that a little odd when I saw Index. I thought the teacher was a very smart 6 year old.

Age, does it matters in anime?

You forgot Jewelery Bonney from One Piece. Not only can she change her own age at will, she can the age of others as well.

Completely forgot about her. Probably because we haven't seen too much of her in OP yet.

She hasn't shown up in the anime yet, so if you're an anime-only watcher, you might not want to click the spoiler tag.

You just reminded me of someone.

Asahina Tomiko from Shinsekai Yori. Guess her age.

Also, I haven't really thought about this until now but, is lolicon age, or body type? It's honestly hard to believe that Yoko and others like her could be loli.

It's entirely debatable and is properly used to refer to either and/or both, anyone who says one or the other is "right" is simply voicing opinion.

Loli would be body type. Age would be pedophilia.

Loli in this context is not referring to the idea of being a "lolicon" - but to the girl as a "loli". In the context, you'd be saying "a little girl is called a pedophilia", and that's hilariously wrong.

Also, whether or not loli counts as pedophilia is entirely up to debate, given hentai of underage girls is considered child pornography in many areas of the world and is increasingly being accepted as such.

It really creeps me out when a girl look like she's nine and yet her "official" age is 16. Especially in shows with fanservice. I know I'm hardly the target audience for them but I just don't get the appeal of someone that looks like a child as a romantic interest.

One reason I refuse to watch Honey and Clover is the character design of Hagumi Hanamoto. Yeah, I totally believe she's 18 yo.

She's drawn that way purposefully to symbolize her weak demeanor and child like mental state. Not "she's so pure" but literally, she's clearly got some kind of mental issues given she's a world renowned prodigy at such a young age and yet can't handle being away from Hanamoto (the teacher, not herself) for more than 10 seconds, nor interact with other human beings without becoming physically ill, and so on. Hell, her closest friend outside of the group is an actual little girl - this is because she doesn't understand how to relate to anyone but children, as her mind never developed past that outside of in the arts. She's drawn small to further exaggerate this by making it so she even looks as weak and young as she is emotionally and mentally.

It's not "lol here's a little girl we claim is older!" - it's just symbolism, or rather an exaggeration so that it's constantly in your face that she's basically a child in every way but age. Like how Punpun isn't actually a fucking bird boy.

She's not the main character anyway, just one of them.

What I mean is, it has a point there - unlike usual.

I personally find a lot of shonen heroes don't look their ages. Like Ichigo from Bleach, he's supposed to be 15, right? Perhaps not as extreme an example as others, but I think he looks way off. Also, Yusuke in YYH as 14, he looks a might older to me.

I think most of the Steins;Gate cast is supposed to be in high school or something, but they look like college age at least to me. Okarin in particular looks like a grad student. It doesn't help that they never appear to go to school or anything. All look like 20 somethings to me (except Suzu, who looks younger than her listed age of 18 to me, and Feyris who does look 17 to me)

Cromartie High School clearly does this on purpose, though it's exaggerated with Masked Takenouchi, a character the series itself determined was in his 30s yet he passes as a high schooler and as the real Takenouchi to everyone (including the real Takenouchi's parents) despite looking absolutely nothing alike. Of course, everyone in this series looks like they're in their 30s, so an actual 30 something is hardly out of place. No clue on the age of Mechazawa or the Gorillas. There's also an inexplicable mute Freddie Mercury expy who is clearly much older yet still attending high school.

Oh and I'm not counting time abyss characters (like Washu from Tenchi Muyo) or really 700 years old (Aang is technically 112 due to the freeze) tropes in this because that's clearly done for story/character reasons usually and isn't some character designer sucking at their job. Or things like Sora from .hack//SIGN (almost certainly an elementary school child) because that's an online avatar for him, so no one's age in that series is likely accurate to the character designs.

Now for someone who looks older than he is:
Okabe Rintarou. Never would have guessed he's only 18.

First, you have to note that for a fictional medium, characters can possess any chronological age.

The chronological age is almost entirely meaningless.

We correlate chronological age with cognitive efficiency, cognitive efficacy, the state of neurological growth, or what we summarize to the extent of observable human growth of an individual, mental age. And that's only because real life works on that principle.

In the fictional medium, characters can possess varying life experiences, varying levels of maturity, reactive responses for certain circumstances, etc.

So in totality, there is no apparent meaning to assign any purposeful chronological age to any individual in an anime, other than to say, to adapt social standards and values to such individuals such as saying that age gap for that relationship is acceptable or that individual is so immature.

What you could debate however is this notion of mental age with respect to that individual.

X = 500 years would be entirely meaningless in our context as we have no notion of what such an individual could possibly be with regards to their intellect, notion of life, etc.

We can extrapolate base on individuals who are 60, 70, 80 or even 113 years old at best.

I really hope you're trolling, otherwise you're trying way too hard to sound smarter than you actually are and should know better than to fluff up what you're saying by filling it with saying absolutely nothing.

Odd one (cause yes there's heaps of anime characters that look younger than stated age) - but the one that really irked me was Marin from Brigadoon. She's supposed to be thirteen but looks like she's about six (and occasionally acts that way).

Plus she's not the usual loli design (unless that's what passed as loli in 2000? ) 'Stuff' happens to her, and then there's the whole big romance with Melan.....I guess with the 'stuff' maybe it's all meant to make it more poignant, but in actual fact starts ruining credibility and instead starts giving off pedo vibes.

Of course this is the way the character designs were done in the manga...so it's not like they could change it...but still!

Edit: Wait think manga came after the anime...not sure!

It's hard to come up with examples that aren't "Character is a magical being with a much greater lifespan than humans".

This is a 17 year old.

I'm surprised I haven't seen Recorder to Randoseru mentioned already. That show is built on not one, but two examples of this.

There are some women especially in Asia who are 18+ and look 10-13, there was an article on Sankaku with that vary example. It's just nowhere near as common as it is in anime.

Also the girl in my set is 20 but looks 12.
