How much anime do you think someone needs to have watched, to differentiate himself from an average viewer or fan? I've seen some people on various communities who have watched hundreds of anime, and they commend the respect of others as someone who can be trusted on what is a quality anime, and what is not.

It don't matter. I respect people for what they say and how they do it. Only if someone appears to be very narrow-minded from what he says I may look at his list for a possible explanation and find it in his very limited experience in the medium. But not the other way round. And sometimes I'm baffled by the stupid statements of people with a lot of experience too.
I probably regret this post by now.

Am I your Tsukihime?

@ OP - All it takes is one series and the knowledge and insight to back up your thoughts to make you a respectable viewer. Unfortunately, there's always the handful of people who have seen less than 30 series and try to talk about anime trends/industry's future/moe so it really helps reinforce the idea of a hierarchy based on # of series seen.

None.
Everyone should receive respect because its the right thing to do. No one should make themselves out to be better than others just because they've seen more shows.

Everybody is going to say it doesn't matter (because it really doesn't), but for what it takes to be 'experienced', 400 or so would be a good number. Builds up fast if you watch movies and seasonal anime.

Personally I think someone should have seen at least 25-50 anime, give or take, and not of all the same genre, before they can make an informed opinion on what is or is not good *Based on Their Own Tastes*. But no matter what number they've seen, I won't always agree purely because I know taste differs. Someone seen 1,000 anime and tells me one is bad and I shouldn't watch it? I'll probably ignore that because I may actually like it.

Well to be honest it's not how much you watch but how many fellow fan you can gather around sit down and watch something you all enjoy watching, anyone gets my respect if your a fan or a beginner, sure we have our different opinions on different matters in a show and dislikes and likes of a show or characters but at the end of the day we are all fans of the same thing ( anime ) and everyone gets my respect for that

Having a lot of anime under your belt might make you little more dependable on what is good or not but mainly comes down to what kinda person you are. As being close or open minded makes or breaks your dependability on the subject.

I don't really respect anyone unless I think they have good taste or they are very good at justifying their opinions. The amount of anime they have watched doesn't particularly matter. Although I wilsay that people wwho have watched less than 20 or so anime or only watch a single genre cannot make a sweeping judgement about the whole industry.

It's like your values are an universal truth, and everything revolves around what you deem to be of quality. Taste is subjective, you hypocrite.

This discussion topic is doltish. I don't watch anime to garner others' respect, I watch it for my own gratification. Not even in a pinch do I care about their anime e-peen.

I don't know if the number of animes you've watched counts or not, you may be new to anime or not. Talking about respect, I only respect those who don't badmouth any anime, I hate when people start with your taste ''sucks'' or mine is better, everyone has their own taste, you don't have any right to talk trash about someone's taste.

Posts like this are absurd. I've seen a shit ton of anime (60 fucking days of my life). I'm an experienced watcher. You don't have to be an otaku to be considered an "experienced" anime fan. Wouldn't that make the term "otaku" pointless?

Uh, 60 days isn't a "shit ton", I'm afraid. It's average.

I said nothing about otaku. You don't need to be obsessive about anime to have seen a lot. I built my 135 days over a period of 5-6 years.

Think what you want. It's subjective anyway.

But about the otaku thing, you're wrong. Watching anime everyday, multiple times a day, is obsessive.

It's just a hobby. Most people watch several hours of TV every day, right? Or they play video games instead. Nothing unusual about four or five episodes every day.

Again, stop mistaking subjectivity for objectivity.

If you don't have a job and/or go to school, you might not think watching several hours a day is too much. However, if you're someone who has other priorities, there really is a problem with watching that much anime because it will get in the way of other things you have to do, especially if you have other hobbies and a social life.

"Most people" do it? So what? Does that mean it isn't obsessive. Nope, sorry to break it to you.

That's how I look at it, it's not really obsessive at all. Or than you can just start calling everyone obsessive at everything they like to do pretty much.
