So I'm growing concerned about Hurricane Irene the forecast looks like this:

I live in New York City, the forecast is showing a possible land fall in North Carolina on Saturday and it might even make it to where I live.

So, should I evacuate? (I never thought a Hurricane could actually hit NYC)

If you look at the projected trajectory -- this hurricane will only be a scratch - just like any other hurricane that took similar paths.

So, no need to panic here.

Good luck bro....I remember the Original forecast was showing landfall in Florida (where I live) but now we're saved :)

Anyways, I don't think this Hurricane can make it to New York with a lot of strength.

I'm not really worried, and I live on Long Island. Looks like it's gonna be pretty weak when it reaches us.

And I believe - the East Coast panicked over a 5.8 earthquake far more, than they would over this storm.

It should be a level 1 storm by the time it reaches us in NYC. The most it will do is probably flip over your trash cans outside and collapse any half-deteriorated structure.

But as always in a natural disaster take precautionary measures (I'm bunkering down in my basement D:<)

LOL, I was hearing it can actually pose a real threat if it somehow strikes us directly or if it gets stronger. Either way, I think I'm going to stay here no matter what.

I could have sworn they used the name Irene for a hurricane before.
They have, and in fact have used it for four other Atlantic basin hurricanes. Hurricane names are on a seven-year cycle and are reused until one causes particularly large loss of life or property damage, at which time they are "retired" by the World Meteorological Organization.

Irene looks like a downsized Gloria, with similar potential flood zones.

Must suck for the north, Here in Florida been dodging hurricanes for like a couple of years now and sending either to Texas or up north and your infrastructure is probably not prepared at all.

It'll weaken a lot as it climbs up north. It already went down from a Category 3 to a 2. It can only weaken for here. :)

I live in Massachusetts, so it won't even be a hurricane by the time it gets up here. Just some wind and rain. I don't think people need to panic, but at least be prepared.

You are safe. If the hurricane touches land then it will lose its strength and never actually get to you. In reality the only area in new york that it is really going to take damage is long island. So there really is nothing to worry about.

Most likely Long Island may only be affected

Although a hurricane has damaged NY directly in the 30's.

Must be real easy to sit there in your cozy little mid-western home making light of such situations when you've never experienced it.

While the quake was definitely overplayed especially here in NYC, I'd rather have people freak out and ask questions than sit idly by doing jack shit. This isn't the west coast with their daily morning wakeup earthquake alarms.

And why shouldn't people freak out about a Cat 2 hurricane? Have you lived in a house on the coast during a hurricane before? Ever had it flood into your house for a whole day straight from torrential rains? Hell, weakened storm or not, places like NYC have ample reason to worry. All that water will easily flood the tunnels and subway systems. Imagine how long it'll take and the money required to clean all that shit up.

What good is worrying going to do though? It's not going to change the end result.
