Hi there,

I generally pick up anime based on the recommendations of people with similar taste to mine.
Most of these people have watched, and love, the Monogatari series.

But I've given it a shot. Well, two. I've watched Bakemonogatari not once, but twice. And I still don't get it.

I don't understand the plot, the setting, the world building. I find the editing grating. I can't tell where the show is going or what I'm supposed to care about.
And I sure don't understand

Are other seasons different? Or if I don't get Bakemonogatari, will I not enjoy the rest of the show?

For me it was good since Tsubasa cat and liked everything since it I especially liked nisemonogatari and Monogatari second season and I find zoku OwariMonogatari to be a nice epilogue to the final season plus the kizumonogatari trilogy is absolute bonkers.

You need to watch Kizumonogatari trilogy because after that you can understand the series much more. It takes place before timeline in Bakemonogatari. I watched Bakemonogatari back then and didnt understand shit. But after watching Kizu I liked the series so much more.

Monogatari is weird… i’ve noticed it is mostly popular with the weebs who are deeper down the rabbit hole than most. It does have some merit with its beautiful unique artistic direction and fun interactions.

Its peaks in my opinion are definitely Kizumonogatari and the Second Season, i can’t remember much else. But you can watch Kizu at any time since it’s just a prequel so maybe check it out.

Bakemonogatari isn't the best season as i like kizumonogatari, 2nd and 3rd season more. But it's not really that different. Kizumonogatari has a different style but others are pretty much the same.

Idk years ago I watched Kizumonogatari movies and went down the rabbit hole of [holy shit there's more] XD, It's one of my favorite series of all time, mostly thanks to the writing and direction the studio Shaft took in the adaptation. I liked it since the movies and the first season, so idk u either like it or hate it

It does not. The MC just sexually harasses a new underage girl every season or something. Ignore the show entirely.

@Zimmu I'm trying to understand the watch order; those are the three movies that would come directly after Bakemonogatari, right? I can still watch one today and give it a shot

Kizumonogatari was released in 2016 irrc but the story takes place before what happened in Bakemonogatari. Its about how the mc became a vampire and how he met shinobu. If you can still watch one today, def go check out Kizu teketsu hen. The movie's animation is actually insane and story is very good so...If the first movie of the trilogy doesnt attract you, you are probably not gonna be interested in the monogatari story at all imo.

It's almost impossible to understand the purpose and deeper meaning of Monogatari on a first watch. It is also not really an anime to watch until you've seen a few hundred in my opinion. It's a show that demands you put effort into it, and if you are not willing to that, then maybe the show is not for you. If you haven't already, maybe try to watch Rascal does not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, since that is a show that is heavily inspired by Monogatari but more accessible to a casual watcher, so it might give you an idea what Monogatari is about. What people end up falling in love with about Monogatari is its depth of characters, character interaction, and just the amount of overall depth the show actually has. Even the fan service has meaning. There are very few shows like Monogatari, which makes it stand out among the numerous copy and paste shows we get every season. You definitely need to watch the whole series to see the whole picture, and if you still don't understand after that (which is understandable), there are a bunch of analyses you can find on YouTube that really break it down if you are interested. Don't worry though if the show is not for you, since even diehard fans recognize it is not a show for everyone.

@atlasakura from my own experience it come from understanding the tropes execution how the story play out and how all the cinematography is at work though I say someone well versed in Japan history would have the same results or someone studying cinema. Also since it's heavy dialogue getting use to read fast help since every episode is pretty packed.

its a coming of age story, a journey through the adolescent years of the characters, each character has their own insecurities, fears, regrets, etc and in bake they are introduced, author shows them as oddities. As the series moves forward each character has to deal with those and "save themselves".

If you dont like coming of age stories i think is kinda pointless to continue with the franchise...

Everyone's experience is different but I feel like mine was similar to yours at first, so hear me out. I thought bake, kizu, nise were all just decent-good at first. Then I got to neko black and was very underwhelmed then dropped. I rewatched those years later, still had the same opinions except Kizu jumped in favorites for some reason. Also the whole time I hated Senjougahara.

But then I continued on to Monogatari Second Season. The series just became insanely good and Senjougahara slowly but gradually forced me to like her and she crawled up my favorites list. Like I was just watching for Shinobu mainly at that point but she passed Shinobu for me by the end. So for me I would say it should click by Monogatari Second Season. You will get lots of people saying from the start but seriously just make it to there imo. Also by this point a rewatch or even just retrospective understanding improves the opinion of previous seasons.

@atlasakura On a very superficial level, Monogatari has a lot of easter eggs and references to other shows that are easily missed if you are not familiar with those shows. On a deeper level, Monogatari very often, parodies, satirizes and deconstructs a lot of tropes found in anime, so a lot is missed if you are not familiar with them. It's like how Madoka Magica deconstructed magical girl tropes. If you are not familiar with magical girl shows, you are not going to be able to fully appreciate Madoka Magica or why that show became so popular.

Monogatari is entirely conversation driven anime, the anime feel very seamless if you find their talking interesting, but lot of their conversation is also random comedy moments and shows mc perverted side that contributes literally nothing to the main plot of any arc in the series.

Bakemonogatari is weakest part of entire series second to kizu trilogy. I’d say keep watching the series, it will get better in second season, Nadeko mudasa and Shinobu time are still some of my favourite arcs even after the series isn’t my favourite anymore.

And yeah fuck Senjougahara.

If you liked Bake enough to watch it twice then keep going. I can't tell you that you will just flat out love Monogatari at a certain point in the show. It's a vibe check kind of thing, and it seems like people on the internet either love it or hate it.

It's pretty normal to not like Monogatari. The show doesn't do the viewer any favors with accessibility. If you don't like the style and the stories then that's totally fine, I'd have to assume most people don't. I personally think it's worth watching. Bare minimum just for the voice cast alone.

@Saputrai This is not the correct order. because none exists. My own prefered one is close to the "light novel release order" you display, but with Bake* and Kizu* swapped. Your image also has Hana* interrupting S2, which is a non-standard interpretation of light novel release order.
Two equally valid choices are Shaft release order and chronological order. I consider the first to be owed to production hell and random, the second to be suited for re-watching masochists only. See: https://bakemonogatari.fandom.com/wiki/Monogatari_Series_Timeline_and_Watch_Guide
