Why do some people watch anime in 1.5x or 2x speed?

Sometimes I see someone wrote that they watch anime in either 1.5x speed or 2x speed, why is that? Why do they love butchering the anime they are watching purposely?

But if you love watching sped-up/fast forwarded anime, then congrats ^.^

I don't even consider them as having watched it if they're doing that.

I'd struggle to say I "watched" an anime if I put it on a higher playback speed, especially since the atmosphere of any given scene can only be truly conveyed through the original, intended speed. That's not even mentioning the prospect of someone missing important information or dialogue now that it's been hurried through with less time for the viewer to soak it in. If someone proceeds to say the anime was "boring", and that they "didn't understand anything" after putting it on a higher playback speed, then the lower score they probably affixed it with would be practically valueless.

Might be presumptive, but I usually assume users who do this either have a substantially lower attention span, or they're attempting to pad their watched anime list because they can technically still say they watched it.

I guess they may be strapped for time and trying to watch more at once, but in reality, it doesn't seem that effective as you won't retain the information
This post is brought to you by your local transfem gamer goblin. Will not tolerate bigotry and will fight against "anti-woke" sentiment to make the anime community a safer place.

I think they have gotten brainrot, by watching too much tiktok.

I think having a no-drop policy can also cause it. Or they want to desperately have an opinion on show they don't like. Or they are lying to themselves, so they can claim they have "watched" it.

Because the pacing of some anime is so slow that even in 2x it is too slow. - Yes I do watch movies and youtube on 1.5 too, as it is more natural to me as everyone and everything is just slown down for the camera/recording.

So now as dub is getting more popular and there is a need to just rant on others for having their own way of watching, so instead of flaming on dub watchers, clowns gonna flame on sped up watchers, I wonder what will be next.

They care more about adding to their total than actually enjoying what they're watching.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

I think 1.5x or under is valid for long running shonen where character reactions and flashbacks are drawn out especially in some terrible fillers

For modern anime that are short? No clue, if you can't sit through an anime at its intended speed then in my opinion you shouldn't say you watched it or have an opinion on it. Like why rush through entertainment when you're supposed to enjoy it? But at the same time I don't really care what others do and you shouldn't either

I always watch YouTube videos at 2x speed, but I'll never do that with anime. I don't watch anime solely for the writing, I also care about the things that would be ruined if watched at a different speed (soundtrack first and foremost).

However, I have to admit that some anime are too slow (in the sense that the characters talk too slowly) and would be way more enjoyable at a higher speed, but I'll never try.

I unironically sometimes watch it that way. I don't do it if I think the 'composition' or pacing is fine (IMO: Kaguya-sama, Jujutsu Kaisen, Shingeki no Kyojin, Frieren, the largest part of Hunter × Hunter), but others (Shokugeki no Souma, most of Bleach, plenty of Naruto, some of Kimetsu no Yaiba). Sorry for giving that many examples, but I wanted to illustrate my case!

I don't think this is the way most anime should be seen, but, since shows suffer of padding (a consequence of being a commercial product), that's my tool!

I don't ever watch stuff with speed up modifiers but I will tap the right button on the direction keys to move forward a few seconds when I find an incredibly boring moment or segment of I just want over with.

After watching Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemmi, I watched a few episodes on 1.5 speed, and the result was sometimes even more hilarious than the usual, especially regarding the insanity of Poemmi. I think bat shit crazy absurdist anime can benefit from 1.5 speed, but I'll still watch it normally first time around.

Speeding up, for example, when there's a 10-second background still image moving slowly with forgettable background music, is fine, because some boring anime TV shows do that.

But if you're listening to dialogue and watching important scenes at 1.5 or even 2.0x, that's weird.

If I were to want to watch something at 2X I'd rather drop it, as simple as that. Unless it's a recap or a loooooong flashback scene.

Yes I don't skip openings either, although I skip some endings.

I think its because they are impatient and have lower attention spans. Or they are only here to grow their list or do YT research. For me I do 1.25, its still feels normal plus I can get more time to do other stuff

There's probably different reasons. I know Gigguk said he'll watch at higher speeds if he's watching anime for research but doesn't actually care about them. There's probably other people who do that, like if an anime is popular at work/school and you just want to be up to date with it.

There's also people who treat anime consumption as a sport, so for them the enjoyment comes not from the consumption itself but from adding more anime to their list, and so they'll ramp up the speed to whatever the highest they can do while retaining a decent comprehension rate. There was one guy I talked to who would watch at 3.5x by default but would watch at 7x or even 16x if he didn't like them. He'd "slow anime down" to 2x or sometimes even 1x if he was really enjoying them. Once I watched an anime at 4x speed just to see what anime was like at the speed he watches but put it in my list as 3/12 episodes watched because that's the time I spent on it and he told me "it's not about the time you put into it, it's about the quantity of media you've consumed. You should put it as a full 12 episodes".

I'm sure there's other reasons, but "I don't like it but I need to watch it" and "I want to pump my numbers up no matter what it takes" are probably the most common ones. There's also people who have just gotten used to experiencing stuff at a higher speed, like a lot of people watch Youtube or listen to podcasts sped up, so if that's what your reference point is then anime is going to sound and feel slow if you don't speed it up. I've heard someone suggest speeding up Usakame to 2x speed so it feels more like its predecessor.

I have not even considered watching faster speed than the normal speed. I enjoy every episodes I watch. Sometimes I may skip the opening and ending songs when they are repeating for a season or some X number of episodes, but even that I also rarely do so.

I find that watching anime or shows is a nice way of entertaining myself and sometimes I watch with my family. Hence there is no reason for speeding up and lose the entertaining value. If one is to use a higher playback speed to watch, I can probably think of someone being less patience, low attention span, temperamental, and perhaps due to varying personality types.

I do it very rarely. When I do, it's typically for anime targeting significantly younger audiences.

Particularly for anime where the main premise is tie ins with toys, magical girl, idols, etc. They reuse a lot of content, such as transformation sequences, etc. as methods of filling air time. Many of these anime are also 50+ episodes long. At a certain point, it's time efficient to speed through repeated content.

Because, its not about the passion or hobby for them anymore. Anime is a part of these peoples identity's. Having a new entry on MyAnimeList, being able to talk about every steaming pile of shit that they end up watching, becomes more important then actually enjoying something.

I do that, but only if Im near the end of the show. If I found a show boring in the beginning or middle of the season, I would have dropped it. But if Im almost at the end and I know this is something I would give a low rating to, Id just put it at 1.5x so I can get it over with

2 possible reasons:

1. they are a youtuber or something, and they do it on generic looking shows, just to get an idea of what everything is

2. they are crazy, and probably listen the nightcore version of all their favourite songs.

I did it once for inu san's dog, cause I was determined to finish it for the sake of saying it's the worst anime I have completed.

Keep in mind the episodes were only 10 minutes long, I watched it at 2 times speed, and It was still miserable. I have seen ecchi trash. I like ecchi trash. But this wasn't even good at being ecchi trash, it was the most boring ass bare minimum ass ecchi out there

Me, My 2 brain cells, and my penis were all equally insulted by that show.

So yeah, this is what it took to make me watch something on 1.5 speed, I think the people who do this regularly should be convicted for crimes against media.

They are either people with horrible attention span, and they fall asleep if something is a bit slower than the speed of light, or they are one of these weirdos who try to consume as many anime as possible and, honestly, if you reach that point, just drop that anime or find another hobby lol

Anime is really the only thing I don't listen to/watch in 2x speed. It really comes down to there being more things to process in Anime.

For anime there is:
- Understand and enjoy the contents (main)
- Read the subtitles
- Appreciate the animation
- Try and analyze the Japanese for immersion learning

For other media there is:
- Understand and enjoy the contents
- Maybe appreciate the visuals (I don't really care unless it's anime)

Occasionally an anime will have a badly animated + slow episode and in that case I will watch it at 1.5x.
To be fair I do have a relatively short attention span so that definitely contributes.

As for motivations for someone to consistently watch in speed:
- Completionism (No necessarily a bad thing, can lead to better media/anime literacy & you won't be left not knowing what happens)
- Watching for research purposes (100% valid)
- Low attention span (May be bad but you've gotta adapt somehow, everyone enjoys things differently)
- MAL points (If it makes a person happy why not?)

I really disagree with your crap anime taste claim above. Everyone enjoys different things about anime in the first place, some like dramatic romance stories, some like technical sci-fi stories, some like immersive fantasy stories, some like relaxing & fun stories, some love animation as a medium, some just like big bouncing boobs...

With this as a basis, there is no reason to think that someone can't have the same appreciation/enjoyment/understanding of a show as you, a 1x watcher, while watching in 2x speed.

I don't understand the point personally, it completely ruins the music and decreases the quality of the voice acting. Breaks tension. It creates an all around lower quality experience. Just go read manga if you wanna go so fast.

"Why do some people watch anime in 1.5x or 2x speed?"

Because they have picked some absurdly long repetitive and boring battle shounen and in the same time they aren't weeb enough to take the suffering like a real fan.
