One Anime you would recommend to a complete newbie? be unbiased from your own taste or preference, bcuz recommending someone Ero-manga sensei on first watch willnt make a good impression.

Probs something like Boku no Hero, its easy to pick up and thoroughly entertaining. and if you dont really care about the order you watch them in you can easily pick up any of the fate series e.g (zero, stay night..)

Kiddy Grade will either get you into anime or make you hate it. Others are Girls und Panzer, Yu Yu Hakusho, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, or Baki. All good fun stuff.

Though your sure bet has to be Cowboy Bebop or the 1998 Berserk. Works every time.

As for what not to be their first... never recommend Evangelion. Just don't!

Depends on their tastes. If they're a big action fan, I'd rec MHA or AoT. If they like dramas and romance, it's a bit harder to find shows that would be easy for a non-fan to pick up, but honestly Yona of the Dawn fits nicely. It has none of the tropes that put people off from trying anime and mostly works to have character development. If someone's really into mystery/psychological, then ERASED or Steins;Gate might be good for them. I'd say the hardest genre for me to rec is adventure since a lot of the adventure animes either are absurdly long or might not appeal to the widest audience. For this, I might recommend Made in Abyss or the Magi series.

Movies also are really good for gateway too, especially Your Name and all the Ghibli films.

During my watch of monster one thought I had is that if I ever had to recommend an anime to my dad then that would be it. It has very little anime tropes and is just a really great and suspenseful story

Violet Evergarden.

A story about a girl who has no emotions due to the fact that she was raised only to fight in war. The war ends and she finds herself on a new journey to learn what it means to be human. Throughout the show she develops new emotions based on her experiences interacting with others in her new setting.

It's what got me into anime so I recommend it to anyone who is new. Not much action, just a really good story, characters, and animation.

I agree, who still watches Boku no Pico?

My recommendation would be Shoujo Ramune.
I probably regret this post by now.

I think it all depends on what the person is into. It's all subjective. Not everyone likes psychological stuff, or superhero stuff, or fantasy stuff. I think the better answer is to tell them what NOT to watch first. Shows like Durarara!!, Parasyte, Mirai Nikki or the like aren't good starters. Find out what they like, and then recommend a linear show with more western style storytelling (i.e. Superhero fans should watch MHA or One Punch Man) that can help them get into the style before branching out.

Death Note is the ultimate starter anime. There's an unspoken rule that if you don't watch Death Note in the first 3 months (approximate. may vary from 1 week to 6 months) of starting anime, you'll be spoiled.

I would also recommend OPM and SnK because they're also some of the most likable ones for many different tastes.

Or Kimi ni Todoke and Kaichou wa Maid-sama for people who want romance.
If you read Eleceed you're automatically my friend.

There are few, FMAB, Death note, One Punch Man, JoJo. My cousins first anime was Berserk 1997 so I would recommend it as well. To be fair anime parodies are also a good way to start. I started anime because of One Piece parody.

There is no inherent best recommendation it depends on what the person is interested in. If someone is new I either ask what shows/genres they like or throw them a bunch of every genre I can think of.

I feel like the problem with questions like this is that they're too broad: if you want to know what anime to recommend to a newbie, you first need to know what their taste in storytelling is.

I always recommend based on the genre they like

for comedy i would recommend one punch man, or nichijou

for thriller i always go with death note. Newbies love death note.

for romance i recommend toradora, or if they like calm settings i go with kimi ni todoke.

if they'd like something musical, nodame cantabile is a great choice

Probably the Miyazaki films, because they're pretty mainstream-friendly. In terms of an actual series, definitely gotta be Cowboy Bebop.

Death Note is the best entry anime in my opinion. You've got a great mixture of popularity, critical acclaim, accessibility, and it's a show that demonstrates how anime can be more than tentacle hentai and cartoons for kids.

If this question comes up, I'll just say Eureka Seven.

Or, Tokyo Godfathers if it's Christmastime. Or if someone just wants a Christmas movie.
Avatar character is Gabriel from Gabriel DropOut.

I always recommend Death Note to newbies.

I've also had great success with Psycho Pass and Attack on Titan.

A lot of people mention FMA:B but I have some friends who straight up told me they didn't like it (the beginning is too slow I think).

Depends on the person, but One Punch Man is really newbie-friendly. 12 episodes isn't as long as some other quality shows. Easy to follow, even if you don't pay that much attention to it. Good visuals. Superhero theme is super popular in the west. Avoids many of the stupid/childish tropes many people not familiar with anime associate with it or that tend to put off the normies, so to speak.

Some animes are quite popular outside the anime community, but, due to the fact that people think anime is childish, the job for the first anime is to convince, so good animes with kind of fast pacing like Death Note, Hunter x Hunter and Shingeki no Kyojin could be great options.

I haven't watched One Punch Man.
FMAB could touch several personal and espiritual topics, so, could be a bit boring or slow paced for newbies.

What it really comes down to, is what the person I'm talking to is looking for. I don't believe there is one end all be all anime that will get everybody into it.

As easy as it sounds on paper for me to recommend somebody Cowboy Bebop or Stand Alone Complex, what if that person in question doesn't like Sci-Fi? They'd be screwed & bored out of their mind whilst watching, regardless of it being anime or not.

Cowboy Bebop for people into sci-fi.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood for people into action fantasy.

Hinamatsuri for people who like comedy.

Made in Abyss for basically everyone.

Ignore the people saying Death Note. I'll spare you my opinion on it, but for someone new to the genre I wouldn't recommend it. Very little happens on screen. It has a massive over-reliance on inner monologue and is at twice as long as it needed to be. If ever there was an anime that would have benefited from more brevity, it's that one.

Not my favorite movie, but my recommendation would probably be My Neighbor Totoro.

Works for both children and adults.
It's pretty much what I would call the safe bet of the anime world. Even without having a clue about the person's tastes.

Something not too long (under 100 episodes), with parallels to western media and not too disturbing (I wouldn't use something including Ecchi (NGNL, Shokugeki no Souma) or parodies/irregular vatriations of a genre (Re:Zero, Madoka). My go to recommendations for people new to the medium is always Fate/Zero. Other alternatives could be One Punch Man, FMAB, maybe Attack on Titan, DanMachi or Code Geass. You should then adjust those parameters to the preferences of the person you wanna introduce and find a fitting show. The rest is pure magic!

bruh

Eghhhh, start by asking them what's some other series they like and work with that info to the best of my ability rather than make a blanket claim.

Or, alternatively, anything with a lot of ecchi to spite people who screech about introducing anime to people with fanservice.

I definitely agree with some of the people on this thread that say it depends on their tastes.
But I think that Studio Ghibli's movies are good to show to everyone, including those who aren't even interested in anime. Many of Ghibli's work are just generally great films overall.

Sword Art Online. I know, but hear me out. While Sword Art Online isn't a good anime, it might bee good for people who are interested in anime. It has enough variety to show beginners what anime looks like. Don't get me wrong, I don't really like sword art online. I just think it's an alright show to introduce people to anime.
