Looking for an anime with a strong female lead in an adult setting. A psychological and/or philosophical themed anime is a pre, but other suggestions are also welcome. Preferably max 26ish episodes long, with an actual ending.

Shows that I really enjoyed are: Ergo Proxy, Ghost in the Shell, and Claymore.

Moribito
Psycho-Pass
Net-juu no Susume
Chihayafuru

Also Fate/Zero, Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Apocrypha got strong female leads: Saber, Ruler.

Akame Ga Kill also came to mind.
The Young Noble of the Field is currently watching - Diamond no Ace: Act II
Misugi-kun is also reading - Kanojo, Okarishimasu

Thanks for your suggestions.

Psycho-Pass was pretty good, did not like Akane that much tbh.
Seen the Fate/Zero arc and I love Saber, very cool character.

From you other suggestions I think I would pick Morbito or Akame Ga Kill.

You've got to watch these:
Seirei no Moribito
Kill la Kill
Cross Ange
Rakuen Tsuihou
Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo
Violet Evergarden
also, check out movies by Studio Ghibli, most of their films have female MCs. My 3 favourites of theirs are Mononoke Hime, Howl no Ugoku Shiro and Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi.

Ooohhhh more fans of Morbito. Might have to give that one a chance.

And I'm also feeling Violet Evergarden. Looks awesome!

I will try them tomorrow, for now it is sleepy time. Thanks for your suggestions.

If anyone has any other stunners let me know ;)

The heroine in Juuni Kokuki starts as a whiny iincho but grows enormously over the course of the story. The main story is 39 episodes though.

Shurrei in Saiunkoku Monogatari is strong because of her willpower and intellect. Another 39-episode epic with an equally long second season.

Mine Fujiko, the femme-fatale of the Lupin III franchise, is more sexualized than these. Lupin III: Part V is a good introduction to the Lupin universe. Fujiko was featured in a show of her own, Lupin III: Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna.

Finally, both girls in Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryouko have to be incredibly strong just to survive in their world. This one has its philosophical moments as well.

Came here to scream Ghost in the Shell and Black Lagoon but seems like you already seen them.

Akatsuki no Yona
Princess Mononoke
Kill La Kill
Elfen Lied (kind of ?)
Nana (if that counts as "strong")
"In this world, wherever there is light – there are also shadows. As long as the concept of winners exists, there must also be losers. The selfish desire of wanting to maintain peace causes wars, and hatred is born to protect love."

I'll be focusing on well-written female leads in my recs - not all of them are adults technically, but they all go through great development whether it's in terms of age or characterisation.

Saiunkoku Monogatari +1
Moribito +1
Chihayafuru +1
12 Kingdoms +1
Dennou Coil
Kemono no Souja Erin
Rose of Versailles
Legend of Basara (I'd recommend the manga more)
Ristorante Paradiso

The following anime have great female characters (from strong to simply interesting) among the main cast though they are not the protagonist.

Fullmetal Alchemist (both series)
Kingdom
Space Brothers
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinju
Steins;Gate
Utakoi

Yes! I loved Tanya Degurechaff, although she technically is a man, but who is counting.

Elfen Lied was my first Anime, and I still love Lucy's story.

Dennou Coil looks nice and intriguing. Also their eyes somehow remind me of Kobayashi.

Looked at several monogatori variants, but there are so many of them it looks complicated for a casual like me :(

Girls last tour..... this looks like a sweet uplifting story. I'll save that one for a rainy day.

Steins;Gate, yes, I will watch this one for sure, supposed to have a great story.

Juuni Kokuk and Akatsuki no Yonai look ok to me, but they don't pull me in at first glance. Lupin and Rose of Versailles are/look too old for me, can't look past the "dated" visuals...... I'm ashamed. All Studio Ghibli are supposed to be very good, I just can't put myself to watching a movie..... not sure why, because I can watch episode after episode. Some of the suggestions are already on my ever growing "I might watch them sometime" list. And the other suggestions did nothing for me, sorry :(

And I don't read Manga, no time left next to my Image comics addiction.

I do appreciate the effort people, thanks!

Perhaps you're confusing Saiunkoku Monogatari with the Bakemonogatari franchise? If so, then they're completely unrelated. There are only 2 chronological seasons of the anime I'm referring to.

Understandable, I'm reluctant to watch old anime too. However, both of them are rich in worldbuilding, storytelling, and characterisation. I suggest you give them a try on a day you're feeling patient enough to put up with the downsides. :)

Thanks, guilty as charged. That is good to know. Might give it a chance after all.

I'll keep that in mind, never know how I feel about it in a few months. Wish I had a lot more time so I could watch as many shows as I wanted, but limited time forces me into cherry picking and picking the ones I have a good initial feeling with.

Never heard of Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka. Looks nice, but after a little snippet it doesn't seem to be something I'd enjoy right now. The title made me think of Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica and got me a little excited, don't think it is the same sadly :(

Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru might have some story in it, but it also might fall flat. I also dislike the animations, a lot of the moving elements (like cars for example) disturbed me somehow. A maybe at best for now.

Thanks guys!

Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria has a pretty damn awesome female MC. It is very psychological too, goes in-depth on stuff like human nature, twisted feelings, being someone you're not, so on and so forth.
No animu tho, light novel, impossible to adapt too due to the way it's written ;-;

Wolf Children -- Movie
Rose of Versailles -- 40 eps. long -- well, u said graphics, but seriously, it's your loss (jus' sayin')
El Cazador de la Bruja -- 26 eps. long
Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran -- 13 eps. long. Possibly dated graphics for you. Some comedic moments (usually involving Ran's sidekick) but also usually a serious "lesson" per episode.
Murder Princess -- 6 eps. long. Dumb title but turned out OK.
+1 Nana
+1 12 Kingdoms

Psycho-Pass (I personally didn't like the second season as much, but liked the first season)

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (Don't judge just watch, at least watch until episode 3 before judging). Also known as Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Made in Abyss (Don't judge just watch)

Wolf Children sounds like a nice story, think I saw a trailer of this one once. On the maybe pile I guess.
El Cazador de la Bruja reminds me a bit of Black Lagoon, art wise at least. This one I might actually like.
Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran looks fine to me graphics wise. So I guess it is only the really old shows that bother me, like Rose of Versailles sadly. Myao kinda gives me a mix between Faye (Cowboy Bebop) and Bulma (DBZ version) feel? Could be an ok show.
Murder Princess sounds like a funny story. Might be something I enjoy.

Nana and 12 Kingdoms looks very nice, but they are a bit too long for me at the moment.

Watched Psycho-Pass and Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, loved both of them. And Made in Abyss is on my list, sounds like a very cool story.

Thanks again guys, appreciated!

You've already watched and liked Madoka, so you might as well watch the sequel movie, right? Homura should count as a strong lead.

Other than that:
Kino no Tabi (the 2003 series is best imo)
Rakuen Tsuihou
Princess Principal
Happy Sugar Life
Second season of Higurashi

Not all of these characters are adults though.

Kino no Tabi looks promising, from the description I get a Death Parade vibe, not in the way they judge people, but in the way that you get to experience a story and can make you own interpretation of that story and decide for yourself what is going on.
Princess Principal looks very pretty and the setting is nice, kind of a steampunk feel. Will try this one for sure.
Happy Sugar Life.... looks cool. But it really hang on the story. But at first it does look like something I would enjoy.

I tried the first season of Higurashi.... but I had to drop it. So I doubt that the 2nd season will be for me.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Seen most of these shows, and liked them, save for Higurashi which I didn't finish.
Soul Eater is probably not my thing, and a tad long.
Kino no Tabi looks pretty cool, was suggested before, still a good pick that I'm gonna watch.
Nausicaa looks to dated for me, can't get over those older visuals.

And kakegurui is about gambling at school I think at least...... ok, it is literally called Gambling School, hahaha..... I'll let myself out. It looked kinda cool when I first saw the trailer, but I was kinda put off by the very over the top facial expresions.

I was considering this one to add to the list but thought maybe the protag was too young. Meh, I think it's worth a look anyway:

Otogizoushi

It's an odd obscure anime that doesn't get much attention. The protag is the daughter of a prominent samurai family and her brother was supposed to fulfill a quest for the Royal Court but fell ill. Being fairly skilled on her own account she decides to take his place complete with a male disguise. A loyal retainer/bodyguard accompanies her.

Now the odd part: the anime is split into two arcs: the first is as I described and takes place in Japanese medieval period (972 AD). The second part is set in modern Tokyo with reincarnated versions of the same characters. The protag, Hikaru, has inherited an apartment building and is the landlord to many of the reincarnated characters -- so the social positions are similar. The 2nd arc is more of a supernatural mystery story -- trying to unravel the disappearance of Hikaru's brother and other supernatural events -- events which are connected with those from the first arc.

Very nice art by Production I.G., (I was impressed with the realistic character designs). Relaxing, wistful soundtrack featuring the flute.

Otogizoushi, I love the style they used on the backgrounds. The music also is very strong, as in it is very fitting for what is happening on screen. Only watched a short bit of ep02, but a good first impression.

And her eyes remind me of Motoko Kusanagi, they really expres strenght very well. Ok, just looked at what Production I.G. was...... lets not speak of my ignorance as a filthy casual.

Thanks!

It is pretty different in story and overall plot, but it delves into the psychology of the characters, specifically the titular lead, Asuka. Is it as good as Madoka Magica? imo, no, for a couple different reasons, but it is good in its own way, and I'd at least add it to your list.

Lmao, fair enough.

If you don't mind the endless yuri fanservice then it's honestly not a bad show. There's straight romance about halfway through and the premise is super interesting in my opinion. Oh well, if ecchi is not your thing then too bad I guess. Enjoy whatever you end up watching though :)
