Does anyone hate recap episodes or is it just me?

Now when Recaps are not forced into broadcasting (see Fullmetal Alchemist: Reflections) it's alright because there's no reason you have to waste time on such crap if you don't want to, but when they push a recap episode into episode broadcasting like Shingeki no Kyojin episode 13.5 it seriously draws my ire. What's the point of a recap episode other than making an excuse for no episode for the week? Most of the time they're all just monotone narrations of what happened up to then with nothing unique or special. Sometimes there'll be some half-assed things to keep your interest like the NANA Recaps being set in a bar with bare bones commentary (no joke).

The best recap I have ever seen, and the one I wish they could just learn from, is Sword Art Online: Extra Edition. I mean, the whole thing is a recap narrated under a completely new episode that stretches to an hour worth of fresh content. Sure, it might not have been the best thing in terms of a story, but why can't all recaps be like this if they're going to keep existing?

Someone told me there was a recap episode in Death Note, I don't know which one is that, but the fact that I didn't feel it was makes it the best.

But yeah they suck.

I skip recap eps, they are annoying. If I think something might happen I just skip to the end and see if anything new is there. Sometimes recap eps are necessary and I don't hold it against the animation studio for doing it, it just really sucks when you look forward to a new ep and get stuck with that.

I always watch them. If you skip them and then add the anime as completed on your list, then it's a lie.

Meh, OCD. I skip it and mark it as watched, because technically I really have already watched it.

I think recap episodes are more relevant to people who are actually watching the show on TV and missed episodes. Missing an episode in something like Shingeki no Kyojin can make a big difference and I'm sure some people who did miss the episode will be grateful for the recap.

But for people who record or download anime, recaps are cancer.

The recap in Kill la Kill was really good though.

I have mixed feelings about recap episode.

On one hand, I really want the story to progress, on the other, some recap episode(especially the good ones) reminds me why I decided to watch (and like) the show.

Recap episodes give me cancer and mental illness.

Seriously though, they're for TV broadcasting just incase some silly people miss episodes. Basically, they delay the progression of an anime. D;

I did enjoy Kill La Kill's recap episode. Well, it's more like a recap opening of an episode.

recaps are enjoyable if these 2 conditions apply
a) you wanna fluff up your MAL stats
b) you watch them a few years after you watched the show (depends on how good is your memory)

About 99% of the time, I find them annoying. One of the few times I actually enjoyed a recap episode was with Clannad: After Story in its final episode. Then again, I'll give Clannad AS this, it at least had a unique way of telling a recap episode that for the most part worked.

But yeah, recap episodes annoy the hell out of me too and I almost always skip them. The only time they might come in handy is if you're watching a long-running anime series that could use it as a refresher. A recap episode in a 24-26 episode series in my opinion is stupid and unnecessary.

My favorite recap is Kill La Kill's, gotta love how they toyed with that.

As for full episode recaps, I generally dislike them. They're literally made for people with bad memory. SnK's recap, for example, spends the second half showing footage from the most recent arc. Recap episodes usually don't capture the fine points of the series so far and are bland copy/paste montages of previous episodes.

Lemme re-phrase that then...

In a 2-cour anime or less.

Are there seriously recap episodes for 12 episode anime? Well, I suppose there are sometimes OVA recaps, but are there like mid-season recaps of 12 episode anime?

Girls und Panzer for example had 2 recaps while it aired, but I guess they were not 'just' recaps so it's a special case.

Yeah, the Girls und Panzer recaps at least gave us more info on the characters and tanks and such, so they still managed to be entertaining.

As others have said, Kill la Kill's twist on the 'recap' episode was great. XD

They're never tolerable. I never understood Japan's way of storytelling. Do they always have to explain every single little thing in detail? Remind them of everything that happened? It's as if they're treating their audience like 5 year olds. It could also be writers being lazy as fuck and making recap episodes so they don't have to write more material.

Yeah, I do. I just finished the 5 episode recap fillers in One Piece, where it recaps each of the One Piece characters. The Nami recap episode was nice to watch again, but the Nico Robin recap was just redundant and ridiculous, because I had just watched those events 10-50 episodes ago. The Luffy recap episode was even worse. It was just an abridged version of episode 4 (chapter 1 of the manga). I'm better off by just watching episode 4 again instead. Worst recap episode ever! They also had these little sketches at the end of each recap episode, so that's something.

I also disliked the Samurai Champloo and Trigun recap episodes (well the Trigun recap episode had a canon and important scene in the final 3 minutes), since they're 26 episode shows, and the recap was in the middle of the show, so it recaps the events of the first 13 episodes. Naruto had a recap episode at episode 26, so that was annoying too. I know it's a long-running anime, but Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z didn't have any episodes dedicated to a recap, so why do shorter shows do? I'd rather watch an original filler episode than a recap.

I also watched Attack on Titan's recap episode 13.5, but MAL has it separate from the actual anime, so I guess people can easily skip that episode without affecting their anime list.

Recap episodes apparently exist for people who started watching the show late (because they didn't watch it from the beginning) and watch it on TV when they have no other way of watching it. People make excuses like how recap episodes refresh their memories of what has happened so far. Even though I don't like recap episodes, I just watch them anyway. I don't even know if they're recap episodes unless I watch them, anyway.

I dislike almost all recap episodes that I have come across. The one and only recap episode that I think is worth watching is episode 27 of FMA:B. The episode itself had a central theme and was interesting from a philosophical perspective, and best of all used its actual 'recapping' to highlight the arguments being made in the episode. Very creative, and actually interesting to watch.

But virtually all other recap episodes are not done like that, so yes, I tend ton dislike them.

I'm pretty sure everyone universally thinks they're a waste of time. I can kind of understand if it's a long-ass series spanning multiple years during breaks, but I mean come on, do you really need one in a one-cour series?
