Due to our large downtime of late, I've been instructed to turn off a few heavy processing statistic features throughout the site. This will hopefully help the load issues we've been seeing lately. Until Crave can get around to looking at our hardware issues (next week), these statistic features will remain disabled.

Stats disabled include:
Signature updates and anime/manga stats

Note: Your stats haven't disappeared, but they won't "update" until we turn these features back on.

Sorry for the trouble.

Yup. I guess we need more features off. How about "What's Being Watched", anime/manga top rank, some forum features/stats?

Are you sharing the same server as those Crave people? If so, might want to see if they can put you onto a different server all together. If you are on a different server, might want to see if they can put you onto a couple of server and have all your heavy hitters like those Signature updates and anime/manga stats updaters on one server to do all the processing and your normal somewhat static stuff on another server to help balance out the load. Just a few suggestions

Perhaps another maintenance run/upgrade is due? Those feature are quite a valuable aspect of MAL in my opinion so it would be nice to get the back soon. Best of luck, K

It is way better to have some features disabled for a few days than running into some problems in the future because of them.
You guys do what you have to do, with the time it takes. The really important thing is that MAL will continue to run smoothly.

As always, thanks for your hard work.

Do what you have to do to have MAL running properly again. The time it takes to load this site sometimes is unbearable.

all I'm saying is that this site would need something to help balance out the load so it won't over work the 1 and only server it's using. Need to get yourself another server for the database and services to run and another for the normal server side processing scripts (php, javascript, etc.).

Scsa, we're definitely running MAL off of more than one server (4 to be exact). Please understand we're doing what we can.

Holy [censored], 4 servers already? Gez, MAL is growing faster then the servers can keep up o.O

Edit: I thought MAL was running off of 2 servers at most currently....

Btw, not like I'm complaining or anything, just stating here, I could do without the stats and what not as long as we have our basic functions (searching for series, adding series, and being able to update it all through the web page like it is right now). And when you can get the services up doesn't matter to me, just take your time (rushing things causes more issues).

Are these images cached, or generated on-the-fly every time? If they are, and still causing this such heavy load, I'm impressed.

I have a suspicion that the extra load from the signature updates is because of all the people bombarding the RSS feeds with improperly configured php scripts in their signatures.

Even though a handful of users are smart enough to configure rss and image caching, most scripts I see will download the feed from MAL every single time a forum page loads with their signature -- very not good.

I am a banana.

This I think is the case with my new sig (using Scud's script) which is a drag. My old sig (Zarin's script) would just update the sig every 10 mins IF something had changed, and still work if RSS (MAL) was down, the new one was down during all the crap yesterday, so seems to be polling it live. >.<

I have an idea: If someone's RSS feed is being loaded excessively, through their sigs, they have all of their updates display as Naruto and Boku no Pico. Good idea?

Also, I remember how, back then, when I first joined, PHP sigs were used by people who knew what they were doing or was friends with Talon.

Of course, nowadays, PHP sigs are about as interesting and non-conformist as emos and punk rockers. Now I'm just a typical trendwhore.

Heh, before I found out about the Scripted Signature club, it took me a while to figure out how it is done. Most of the time spent figuring out how to get the data (I didn't know of the RSS feeds, I even thought that PHP scripts are only used by people with access to the SQL server...)

I cache the feed for 20 minutes (length of an anime episode) but no image caching.

Yeah, I didn't know until I saw the RSS feeds too. I'm not in the club though, since I can figure things out on my own, with the help of google and what-not. If I do need help, though, I ask around. And my feed is cached at one hour, I think.

Assuming there is money for this.

As for stats, they're a very nice addon, but an addon nonetheless. As long as the rest works I'm happy, althought I do hope, that this problem can be resolved. Good luck with it!
