i was debating whether to post this in Anime, General, or Games, but since VN's are games i guess this topic belongs here.

Do you play Visual Novels? for those of you who don't know, visual novels are basically a cross between a video game+and a book. you get to make ur own choices as u progress through the game as the protagonist. visual novels are sometimes known as dating sims in the west. VN's usually have different endings based on the choices u make, usually have around 13 Different Endings....

I've only played translated demos of Visual Novels and a few full VN's since they are 100% japanese and there are only a handful of translation groups.Btw most visual novels are 18+ but there are some all age versions like Ever 17(which i have btw)

these are some screnies from Narcissu ( a free visual u can download from http://narcissu.insani.org)

I'd jump at the chance to play a translated version of Tsukihime or Fate/Stay Night and their respective side stories. Unfortunately, my low level of tech savvy discourages me from finding uploads and language patches. Shame.

I attempt to play a lot, some of them yaoi and some of them just for the fun. I have a real problem finding translators, so I attempt to use a translating program. It gives me a lot of gibberish and Engrish, but it makes some parts easier to understand.

Most of what I play are visual novels. At the moment I'm working my way through Apathy - Gakkou de Atta Kowai Hanashi and Utawarerumono, both of which are fun though Utawarerumono's strategy parts are a bit clunky.

I also really recommend Ever17 to anyone looking for a good game, it's pretty much the best story-centric (non-H) visual novel for sale in English.

I did dl it and got an english patch for it. They are a lot easier to find than you think. Tsukihime is fully trasnslated and as for FS/N, only the Fate route is done and they are currently editing the UBW route.

Sadly, in Tsukihime's case it's the other way around. Unless you want to spend over $250 on Yahoo auctions Japan it's impossible to find.

Also visual novel downloads really aren't that rare.

250$??didnt know they were that expensive. :/ well u can always go to japan but i dont think anyone is willing to do that.

P.S. School Days is Eight Frikken Gigs ><". and here i thought downloading 4gigs(ever 17) at 1-3kb/s will take forever xD

They're usually not THAT expensive, though most are more expensive than you'd think. I've bought pretty much every visual novel I liked and could find for less than $50, but most popular ones will run you a good $75 at the least.

But then there are translation groups =D. gotta love em. without em, We'd be stuck watching dubbed anime, english mangas, etc..:D

You can always try to find someone who doesn't want their copy anymore and buy it.
That's when the prizes get about as high as Entropy said.

It's kind of a hobby of mine to play VN.. but not just any kind, only those with the decent stories are worth it ;) Currently playing Karen.. reminds me of an english translated game from way back -> Come See Me Tonight .. The story line from the start is about similar, the good part is the main character isn't as irritating! YAY! ^_^

FS/N, F/Ataraxia, Little Busters, Clannad, Utawarerumono, Yume Miru Kusuri, Ever17, Tsukihime, and Kagetsu Tohya. Those are the ones I've either completely played, in the middle of playing, or have played a little.

I do also have Tomoyo After but I don't really feel like playing it, rather just wait for translation.

EDIT: I forgot I also have played a bit of Kana's Little Sister.

EDIT2: I also forgot I have Saya no Uta, fail for not remember.

Usually I don't play, but after seeing how short the Kyou and Tomoyo arcs were in Clannad, I decided I had to play the visual novel to see what I was missing out on.

As long as it doesn't drive me insane, I might start on some Type-Moon Novels as well... as long as there aren't any witnesses if you know what I mean. >_>

Speaking of that I still need to go finish Come See Me Tonight and Come See Me Tonight 2 (two I was currently playing before I moved).

Yep i play them.Although i do seperate Visual Novels and Bishoujo games as 2 seperate things. Many because visual novels tend to be an animated story with no interaction e.g. Narcissu or Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu. Bishoujo games are the typical "decision point" interaction games

That's not correct.
Those visual novels where you can't make any decisions and just read are called kinetic novels.
The term 'bishoujo game' simply implies that the game is centered on the interaction with pretty female characters.

Anyway, yes, I play them ^_^ I've only gotten into VN very recently, though, and I've only played about 3 or 4 games so far.

I love visual novels...
I have every one of Key's works (though I can only understand Planetarian and Clannad), all of Type-Moon's works (though F/HA isn't working at the moment), and a few others I can't remember.
So in total, 10+ at the moment.

I also play them, bishōjo games are realy great, not as good as anime mind you but still very enjoyable ;)

Played about 12-14 perhaps, dont know if you'll let me pass off games i've played through once or twice for "played".

Since there are realy so many possibilities to try out in these kind of games that there are only a few maybe 3-5 that I have completely played through meaning I've gotten all the endings, never gotten all the CGs not enough of an bishōjo game otaku for that XD

Played games like: Sagara family, X change 3, do you love horny bunnies 1(and 2), Idols galore, Kana, Kango Shicyauzo, Yume Miru Kusuri, tokimeki and Private Nurse.
Hmm I cant remember any more over the top of my head but I've played a great deal more.
However I would like to ask all you guys who have played these kind of games, which one is your favorite?
Mine is Private Nurse with Sagara Family coming in a strong second ^^

You can find the unfinished patch in some places (which covers everything except for the After Story) but I think it shouldn't take them that long to finish now. According to Baka-Tsuki's wiki, the status of the translation is 99,9%.
